Fall is in the air and the heat wave that have swept across our area these past few days are starting to cool down. The cooler temps call for ‘nesting’ and staying indoors more often. The change of the season is when I start to look around the house toย figure out what updates I could do to make ourย home seasonally ready for family and friends alike.

Growing up, my mom used to make sure we cleaned and prepped the house around special holidays and times of year. It’s just something we did.ย Now that I have my own family, I find myself doing the same thing. We have a front sitting room that currently has no “sitting”, furniture, or decor, whatsoever. I’ve pretty much not bothered with it all summer long. But as soon as the seasons began to change from summer to fall, I immediately started thinking about how I could makeover the space. It’s the time when we desire to invite friends and family over for warm meals, “competitive” games, loud chats, and hearty laughter, or just to catch up with our friends. Or have guests over for a few days. Making over our front room will provide a welcome arena for all.ย On occasion, such as last Fall, I’ve moved around furniture and decor to add to the space but nothing permanent. It needs its own furniture and decor. I’ve been looking for the perfect pieces for the space and thought I would share some tips on how to makeover a small sitting room while getting it seasonally ready.

10 Tips for Making Over a Small Sitting Room - At Home With Zan

  1. Less is more: When making over a small room, always keep in mind that less is more. Too much decorations in a small room will make it feel ‘closed-in and much smaller. Start out by thinking about how you could use lessย to have more space because in a small room space is everything.
  2. Chooseย warm tones: In our first small home, we chose warm colors to makeย it inviting. The colors were perfect year-round but brought out that extra special touch during the season’s change.
  3. Select multi-purpose furniture: To maximize your space, choose furniture that can double as storage. Some coffee tables, console tables, and even couches are designed to do more than what we have known them for. A double stand coffee table will work to provide extra storage. Just add a few baskets on the second stand to corral items, cut clutter and free up some space. A console table with drawers could also be used as a desk in a small space.
  4. Consider using a sofa bed:ย If you plan to have more guests than you have bedrooms to accommodate, you may want to consider a sofa bed or pull-out couch that works as a chair by day and turns into a bed by night. My husband is always talking about getting a pull-out couch for that room and I’m seriously considering the option.
  5. Keep the colors consistent: Use just a couple different color hues for a cohesive look. Too many random colors in a small room will make the room look too busy. Neutral furniture with a pop of color will make itย lighter, brighter, and spacier. For example, think about ideas such as a neutral overall color pallet on the main pieces of furniture with an accent chair in a different color.
  6. Add a mirror or mirrors: Mirrorsย make spaces appear larger than they are. Place one or two on your walls to create that illusion.
  7. Add a statement piece:ย What is the that item that will catch your attention when you walk into the room? This can be a gorgeous colorful rug, beautiful window curtains, a large piece of art, or a well created gallery on a small wall or a unique find.
  8. Add texture and layering: Autumn is such a beautiful time for layering your home with the season’s bestย to create warmth and coziness. Coziness does not necessarily mean smaller. Layer with a rug, use a fur blanket orย knitted throw and cozy pillows to make your home warm and cozy.
  9. Accessorize Carefully:ย Use a mix of large, smallย and differentย shapes of accessories but keep them to a minimum.ย A coffee table, for example, with a ton of accessories on it will look overly cluttered.ย Bring in a few of your favorite accessorizing pieces to compliment the space but don’t over-crowd it. Don’t forget to add a plant or two like this Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree.
  10. Add seasonal touches:ย The more I decorate seasonally, the more I see the need to use less. Using less seasonal decor does not make you less of a decorator but it leaves room for enjoying the space. Apart from adding a colorful throw pillow or a cozy throw blanket (as in number 8), bring in other touches of Fall. Itemsย with hues of copper or a couple of pumpkins, a lovely Autumn wreath, lanterns, or Fall scented candles on a small console table will make the room look seasonally welcoming.

I hope these tips will get you off to a great start in making the best of a small room. Remember that less is more and don’t overdo it; only a few favorites will do.
