Five Ways to Make Home Warm and Cozy During the Colder Months

I love home and I love making it cozy. In the Fall, when the air starts turning chilly, I immediately start thinking about how I will add coziness and warmth to every area in our home. One of the comments I get from readers is that my home seems so cozy. So, I was recently inspired by Douglas Elliman Real Estate in Sunshine Florida to showcase how I warmed up for the colder months. I thought this would be the perfect time to share more of this subject with you. If you are not aware of Douglas Elliman, they are the fourth largest real estate firm within the US, with offices extended to forty-three countries across the globe. I’d say that is huge.

5-ways-to-make-home-warm-and-cozy-during-the-colder-months

This post is so fitting for me. As a tropical girl, I always want to be warm and cozy. I have gotten used to the weather changes here in the Midwest and I do enjoy it. (The Fall is just so beautiful). But I learned some things that seem to work well to keep our home warm and cozy during the colder months. And I am sharing five of my favorite with you today. Last year, I shared a similar post where I talked about 6 Ways to Welcome Fall into your Homes. It was a very popular post. You can find it here if you are interested.

1. Adding Soft Blankets, Throws, Fleece and Quilts

fireplace-mantel-basket-of-blankets

Nothing says cozy than a soft blanket thrown over a chair. It is warm and inviting and is truly a necessity in the Fall and Winter. I keep lots of them in various places throughout our home. All the kids have blankets of their own, too. Our five year old thinks it is the best thing to crawl under a blanket and get cozy. I have to agree, since most of the times that is exactly what I want to do. I might have gotten myself one of the softest blankets last year. I found it at Ross dress store and let me tell you, I love that blanket.

soft-blanket

Last winter, it was my go-to blanket that I used to crawl up on the couch to type or to watch holiday movies when our kids took naps. I brought it up into our bedroom and love it on my bed. Talk about soft. One cannot go wrong with soft blankets, throws, quilts, etc during these colder season. I even extended my blanket reach beyond inside the home and into our car and van for the kids. It is something I have done since our first kid. They love to cover up with their blankets in their car seats to stay nice and toasty when we are out and about during the colder months. On occasion, you can find me doing the same thing while my husband is driving.

2. Layering with Rugs and Floor Mats

area-rug

If you have hardwood floors, you know how cold they could be during the colder months. Have you ever gotten out of bed in the early morning and stepped on cold hardwood floors? I have in our previous home. Occasionally, the temps dropped way down during the night and everything got so cold. That’s when the rugs came in handy. I know it may not be ideal to layer all over your home if all it has is hardwood floors. Choose the areas that are heavily trafficked and add a rug or two. Your feet will thank you.

By the way, if you have small kids who are constantly on the floor, I’d say go for it. They definitely will need that extra padding and warmth in their play area. And if you don’t have hardwood floors, rugs and mats are still great to have when it gets colder. They will add that extra cozy feel that just seems to go hand in hand with Fall and winter. The rug shown is one I bought last Fall for our previous home. The living room was laid with hardwood floors and I really needed to warm up the space during the cooler months. We also had a little crawler on hand. Currently, we don’t have hardwood floors but I still love laying with this rug over the carpet in the living room. In fact, I might have kept it out every season.

3. Adding Throw pillows

couch-with-pillows

Throw pillows are great for changing the look of a room. Instantly! They really are easy decorative accents. If you find the right ones, of course. And they will add that extra coziness and warmth while providing support and comfort while laying down. So they are decorative and quite functional at the same time.

Currently, I think I have too many of them!! I have a ton of navy blues, whites, and gold, and the kids have their own purple, pink, and blue. I brought in some gold during the Fall. But now I am considering investing in a few pillow covers to change them out. The gold is nice but not sure I like it against our already oh so colorful living room. But adding a couple throw pillows is always a great way to transform a room and make it look cozy. Only a few will do. No need for a chair full and no place to sit. My couch looks filled with pillows now but I have moved the pillows to make room for sitting.

4. Adding Indoor Heat (apart from heating and insulating)

  • Lighting the Fireplace Occasionally

fireplace-mantel-full

Adjusting the thermometer for indoor heating and insulation during colder months is a given. But other times, the gentle glow of a lighted fireplace brings such a wonderful feeling. I love it so. Basically, if I could have the fireplace on for a few minutes every day during Fall and winter, it would be nice. We have to watch the gas and energy bills so turning it on daily is not the most practical. But it is always nice to bring in some fireplace warmth on a chilly night. The kids love to put on PJs and get all snuggly while watching the glow and getting warmed up. And we may or may not make some s’mores in the process.

  • Lighting Candles

I love having lit candles at home during the Fall whether they are scented or not. They add such ambiance to a space and really makes it so warm and inviting.

candle-on-table

5. Adding Window Curtains

window-curtain-design

Curtains are a great way to add privacy and warmth to a room and make it feel cozy. I love the look of curtains. Remember my curtain story I shared here a few weeks ago? I really do feel that they complete a room but that’s my opinion. When we moved here during the summer we ended up with so many more windows than we could imagine. I knew that I wanted to add some curtains once the weather got cooler. I did just that a few weeks ago.

window-curtain-rod

I chose curtains that are lighter as opposed to the heavier block-out type that is probably more “cold weather friendly”. Talk about keeping out that extra cold draft. All the windows have blinds so that’s a plus. But I wanted to keep the rooms bright and airy and still have that bit of sunshine peeking through the windows. It is something I have come to appreciate. In the Caribbean, opened windows are just the thing!!

So these are five of my favorite ways to add warmth and cozy to our home during the colder months. What are some of your favorites? Would love to hear about them.

Gift Ideas

Unique Holiday Gift Ideas for Home and Family

This post is sponsored by Uncommon Goods. But all reviews and opinions of the products are my own.

It’s always nice to receive good gifts but I think it is an even better gesture to give good gifts, especially when they are meaningful and serve a purpose.

candles

I’ve been noticing a trend that as soon as Fall rolls around folks start talking about Christmas and gifting ideas. And I’m like, let’s just think about Fall for a little longer, shall we? At the same time, I know there are reasons to start planning early. Fall and Christmas are close to each other and sometimes they seem to run into each other. Plus with all the hustle and bustle of the holidays getting a head start is not a bad idea at all.

Do you ever find yourself buying the same types of gifts over and over again for certain family members only in different colors or styles? Tell me I’m not the only one. Sometimes it’s not always easy to find that perfect gift. Other times, it does not help that some family members are hard to shop for anyway. They already have everything you could think about or they are just hard to please. That is when it’s time to start thinking outside the box for gift ideas. And I’ve got just the place to find out-of-the-box gifts with unique styles that would be great for those family members.

Ever heard about Uncommon Goods? Their product line is nothing like I have seen. It is seriously out of the box! Here is a little bit of what Uncommon Goods is all about. It’s a small independently owned business located in Brooklyn, New York where the focus is to create uniquely designed items for home and family. They also offer support to and create a platform for designers. Many of their products are handcrafted and others made from up-cycled or recycled items. Their mission is to impact the world in a positive way without harm to animals and humans and I think they are doing just that by what they create. I love it that their products are so unique and “uncommon” as their name states. You know the kind of things you wish someone would invent to make certain items more functional and even add more convenience? That’s is exactly how I would describe these “uncommon” goods. They are functional, convenient, pretty and not the everyday type of gifts. I’ve rounded up a few of these goods that I think would make wonderful (use-able) gifts for home and family. Check them out below.

Gifts for Mom

I don’t know about you but I have a tendency to forget to wet some of my plants, especially the ones on my porch. Out of site, out of mind right? When I’m busy getting stuff done inside, my porch plants get neglected. How cool is this Recycle a Bottle Plant Nanny Stake? I’ve never seen anything like it. Add your favorite bottle with water to the stake and it will pour out the right amount of water when the moisture has dried up. This would be such a nice gift to mom (or self) to help with the plant watering struggle. I know this would be very helpful to my plants. As a homemaker, I have come to appreciate gifts that could benefit the entire home just as much as I love ones that are for me only. What do you think about it? You can find lots more unique gift ideas for mom here.

Gifts for Dad/Husband/Men

When it comes to buying gifts for men, I tend to have a difficult time deciding what to buy. Uncommon Goods has an entire selection dedicated to men. One item that caught my eyes while browsing their site was this Pistachio Pedestal. It would make such a good gift for dad/husband’s office. My husband loves snacking on nuts and I think this would be great to have on his office desk. He could fill it up with nuts and snack away as he pleases or his office visitors could snack away as they please. What do you think of this one? If you are ever stuck on knowing what gifts to buy for dad/husband or men in general, you will find loads of brilliant ideas here.

Gifts for Families

We often narrow our gifts to a specific person but how about something that an entire family can enjoy? I know of a lovely couple that purchases a game each Christmas so their entire family could play games. It is one of their family traditions and I think it is such a neat idea. How about these big yard dice to add to such a game collection? They look so cool and are made from solid pine wood. It would definitely be fun to have some of them for family game time. I have always been a fan of games with dice. Remember Snake and Ladder? Do they still make that game for kids? I loved that game. Especially when I got to shake then roll the dice hoping they would fall on a number that would skip over the snake. But I have not seen dice so large as these jumbo ones.  Even though they are called yard dice they will be great for indoor games as well. Uncommon Goods has lots more unique gifts for families. Click  here to see more.

jumbo-yard-dice

I also really loved their kids selection of gifts. Wooden toys are a favorite around here and the ones from their store have an educational aspect to them that I love. Like these set of wooden blocks and so much more neat ideas for the little ones in your family.

I wish I could show you a bunch more of the beautiful uniquely crafted gifts from Uncommon Goods but I think you should take a look around for yourself. You’ll love them and may even find something to add to your gift list. What do you think of these gift ideas? Aren’t they unique? I would love to know your thoughts in the comments.

Gold Dipped Vases

Gold dipped vases are an easy way to add a touch of class to clear glass vases. They only require a few minutes to do and is less pricier.

gold-dipped-vases

The good things about these are that the design and the color could be customized to one’s own liking. I love that they could be used for seasonal as well as for everyday decor. My vases are from the Dollar Tree. It is the one item from the Dollar tree that I like to have on hand seasonally. The sizes and style do vary.

gold-trim-vases

Gold dipped vases are so easy to make. Although, these were not technically dipped in paint. They were sprayed but they carry the same idea as vases that were dipped in paint.

This is how to make them. What you will need:

  • clear vases
  • spray paint (color of choice)
  • painters tape
  • scissors
  • scrap paper

vgold

Make sure the glasses are clean and dry. These are pretty new (I bought them earlier this Fall). But I have used them for another reason before deciding to paint them.

gold-vases

Decide where you want to add the paint. Use painters tape to section out the part that you want painted or to cover up the spot that you do not want painted.

vases-gold

Cover it all the way around. Smooth the tape out. Painters tape can easily be re-positioned so if it does not look right, then remove it and replace.

gold-va

I had some gold spray paint lying around. I love this Rust-Oleum brand and always seem to get it whenever I am purchasing spray paint.

gold-paint

Layer the scrap paper in a well ventilated area, I went outside. Hold each vase over the paper then apply paint according to the directions on the spray paint can. If you are spraying the lower end of the vase, it’s OK if some of it gets to the bottom. You can remove it or cover the entire bottom with spray. You can see my tag on this one still on there. I’m bad at leaving tags on things like these. But once you are satisfied with how the paint looks, let the vases dry. Add another coat of paint if desired.

vase-g

This one looked a little rough in the beginning because I sprayed too much. I removed most of it quickly with a wet rag then sprayed it again. I did three vases and did not have that problem with the other two. Once it was dried though it looked pretty OK.

vas

I love the finished product of the vases. The gold really does add a nice accent to them. And they can be used anywhere in the home.

gold-dipped-vase

Add flowers (real or faux), rocks, shells, pinecones, acorns, any kind of decorative element that goes in a vase, and they will look very nice. And now my Dollar Tree vases do not look so Dollar Tree anymore (at least I don’t think so–). They are a bit more fancy, chic (as they say) and more stylish. And I am really linking them.

gold-dipped-vases-with-flowers

Not quite sure exactly where I want to use them yet. But you can see how I used them here on our Fall table setting in the photo below. Post here. There are many little areas in this house to be decorated and I am still playing around with ideas.

fall-tablescape-dishes-and-cups

Again, this is a very inexpensive way to upscale and customize decor. The design could be changed out to suit one’s tastes too such as adding more lines to create a stripped look horizontally or vertically.

What do you think? Easy enough? Have you dipped or sprayed part of a vase in paint like these before? Let’s here it!!

Milk and Cookies (A Fun Afternoon Surprise Treat)

Family fun never gets old. Every now and again, we love to slow down and do a fun surprise for our family to enjoy.

milk-and-cookies-grateful-sign

My family loves it when we treat ourselves to little things. Or when I surprise them by making a treat such as cookies. To us, cookies are indeed a treat. It is not something that is on the daily menu (who does). I tend to get the urge to make them on a causal Friday evening or so. One of our favorites being chocolate chip cookies, of course. During the Fall when we spend more time inside, it is always nice to have something that smells and tastes good in the house right? So I decided to bake some cookies and make it a bit more special by serving it with milk in cute milk bottles and laying them out on a table decorated with bits of Fall.

Sometimes we get so caught up in the daily mundane (chores, schedules, routines, work, etc) that we forget to sit back and do something fun at home. But when we do, we realize how much we needed it. We also realize that home is much more than just doing chores, making scheduled meals, creating routines, etc. Taking a break and doing something fun together amidst the chaos is always a welcome idea! When my husband decides to BBQ, we all get so excited because grilling is not on the everyday menu. So too, whenever I decide to make something special everyone gets so excited. Check out the smile on this kid’s face when she came home from school and saw this. Leave it up to the kids and they can have cookies everyday. Nope – teeth and health in view here kiddos!! But we love cookies and making them every once in a while is not a bad idea at all.

milk-and-cookies-for-afternoon-snack

For the cookies, I used a regular cookie mix and baked accordingly. I think I must have gotten a sugar cookie mix by mistake. My intent was just to buy a regular cookie mix after my meager attempt of making them from scratch failed. Do they sell those without calling them sugar cookies?

Note: I don’t bake sugar cookies regularly. In fact, I don’t remember baking one since earlier this Spring or so (around Easter). It’s more of a holiday thing. I find them way to sweet especially if icing is added. I always skip the part that says “roll in sugar before baking”. That is just too much. So for these, the kids were only allowed one because I made them big and pretty with icing.

milk-and-cookies-fall-leaf-cookies

I love the cute milk bottles from the Target’s dollar spot. They tend to have all kinds of random things that usually catch my eyes. I bought them earlier this Fall because I knew they would come in handy for occasions like these. Two of the kids don’t care for milk. And I think the one who drank some likes it but does not necessarily love it. My husband will have a glass with pancakes and I will have an occasional glass when we buy the new gallons from the grocery. But having the milk in those bottles added something special to the table. It was tempting to drink rather than having it in a glass.

milk-n-cookies

For the decor, I simply rounded up a few real pumpkins and faux flowers from around the house. I also added a “grateful” sign to the table. My sign is a mat from Target (dollar spot). I framed it using a big picture frame. I love the sign because it reminds me of the bountifulness of Fall and we want to teach our kids to be grateful. It was a nice addition to the table. This little surprise was such a simple act but something they appreciated. It’s the little things.

I have to admit that the cookies themselves were so tempting. But we all had to eat in moderation. All in all, it was a fun little surprise and and a break away from the ‘routine’.

What do you think of the idea? How do you make your family feel special? It would be fun to hear about what you do.

New Window Curtains in the Living Room (My Thoughts)

I love dressing up my windows with curtains. There is something about window curtains that make a room feel complete.

curtains-for-window

I  don’t know where others find fabulous window curtains but let’s just say, that tends to be one of the home decor necessities that takes me a while to find. My search usually spreads over months and sometimes over a year. I always imagined having a great room with those luxurious curtains you see in movies or in magazines or in the lovely homes of others. Well, that’s that!! (Let’s stay with the reality here).

When we were first married, our home colors were beige, burgundy, and hints of gold. It took me a while to find the correct shade of window curtains to match my style. I wanted something floral, fancy, and luxurious. At one point, I turned to a friend who is quite talented in making curtains to see if I could pay her to sew and customize our curtains. She could not do it because her tiny young kids kept her busy. But her work is amazing!! So the search continued. After months upon months of searching stores like JC Penny’s, Sears, Bed Bath and Beyond, etc, I ended up settling on some beige curtains along with some pretty long floral shawls to throw over them.

After a few years, my decor started shifting in another direction. I was not feeling the burgundy anymore. I wanted to add some fun colors and that burgundy was cramping my style. A few years ago, I did away with it and brought in shades of blue, pink, and some neutrals. That meant new curtains all over again. The previous curtains just would not work right. In my search, I ended up using temporary solutions and things I did not really love. Might I add that my curtains from our previous home were really mixed and matched. Each of the kids rooms had curtains according to their colors, plus our room. Also, our living and family rooms were different, too. It was my hopes to carry the color from the living room into the family room, but things just were not working out as planned. I kept the mixed and matched curtains until we moved and until I found the correct ones.

window-curtains

So when we moved here, I knew I had more windows to work with than I had temporary curtains to put up. One of the biggest blessings though was that every window already has a curtain rod. And some even have double rods (bedrooms, dinning rooms, front room, etc). And I mean, the rods don’t look cheap by any means. That my friends, saved me so much money because we all know that good curtain rods are not cheap. I mean, we are talking over 16 curtain rods here. Whoo!!

window-curtain-rod

Here is one set of windows with double rods in the front room. I do not have a second set of curtains for the inner rods. Not sure what I want to do – maybe I will add some sheer. But I still desire to keep a consistent look throughout the downstairs. I have to admit, that the white curtains work well with this shade of green. So shades of yellow, orange, green, . . . You’v seen my color dilemma here in this post

window-curtain-rods-doubled

It still was a few months before I chose curtains for this home. I kept looking at the windows and wondering what the curtains should look like and where I would buy them. I imagined white (maybe) that is not too sheer but at the same time, not too thick. Why white? I felt that it would compliment most color schemes and I would not have to keep on changing. Plus, I love love love a room that is bright and airy. It might be the Caribbean girl in me, but I love bright rooms. After searching a few stores like Home Goods, Amazon, and a few other places, I really had no desire to keep on looking. Eventually, I ended up settling on these sets of curtains from TJ Maxx. I knew Fall was here and there is just something about adding that extra layer of cozy. And then there was my Fall home tour

For the curtains, I chose a plain satin and a sheer with a design. I love mixing and matching curtains for a look of visual interest. Originally, I did not want any sheer and since it was Fall anyway, why wouldn’t I choose something thicker? But combining sheer with the semi-sheer seems to work out well. Also, the window blinds are still adding that privacy to our home anyway.

window-curtain-design

When I brought the curtains home, they looked a bit too white. I wondered if I should have bought the beige combo. But then this house has that long yellow wall on the one side and orange on the next so maybe the white was the better choice to stand out??? I have no idea.

The other thing that is bugging me to no end is that the curtains do not come down plush to the floor. They are 95 inches long but because these windows are very high, they are missing that few inches to give them that plush look. While I would have loved them to have that extra few inches (say around 110 inches long), it is difficult to find that length in something preferable. The standard 84 inches popular size is what I temporarily have in some of the rooms. But I think the height of the windows in the rooms comes down lower – so they don’t look too bad. But the length of the curtains downstairs is not really my preferred length.

In any event, I think I will still keep these curtains because I do like them. Even if I end up finding longer curtains, these could be used in the windows with double rods in the rooms. I could use them for the inner lower rods with different colors on the outer rods. I don’t think I could exchange them now that I have already ironed them.

window-curtains-white

All in all, everything is not lost. I do have a few white pieces of furniture. I’ve showed you this room in our Fall home tour hop. Just a few days ago, I ended up moving a couple things around. That little white table and the decor on it were all in other corners of the home. The table was a thrifted find for $10, black in color, and very sturdy. It’s been a while since I’ve thrifted furniture. But a little chalk paint and gold spray paint and my table turned into a fabulous new piece. The curtains compliment the some of the white decor well.

window-curtains-with-design

So that is my curtain story that I ended up typing more than I originally planned. Who knew it would take so long to explain?! What do you think of the choice (other than the fact that they are not plush to the floor)?

Peach Puff Pastry Tartlets for Easy Fall Entertaining

Fall is such a wonderful time for entertaining family and friends. There is just something about gathering together for a meal (big or small) or dessert served with tea or coffee on a chilly evening.

puff-pastry-peach-tartlets

We love having friends over. In fact, just a few weeks ago we had a lovely little family join us at our table for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. The meal was great (if I should say so myself) and the conversation around the table and into the evening was just what everyone needed.

But because I am a busy mom with little ones, I am always looking for the short-cuts to make preparation for entertaining guests easier. Getting the table ready and making some meals ahead of time is always such a big help. It takes away from the stress of being frazzled trying to do everything on the last minute when the guests are arriving.

fall-entertaining-with-puff-pastry

One of foods I like to prepare early, is the dessert. There is usually no compromising – if we are entertaining guests we are having dessert. Desserts are always great for making ahead. But I always make something that requires some. Recently though, I tried making desserts with Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry and never knew how easy it made cooking. It is freezer ready and is just awesome for creating recipes that look and taste just as good. There is something about light and flaky golden dough that I crave when I am working with pastry. These Puff Pastry Sheets met all the requirements! Needless to say, after I bought one, I went back to the store and grabbed a few more and tried out three different recipes. It is easy to use for meals any time of day, breakfast, lunch, dinner, appetizers, basically anything. Fill it up and bake it or bake it and fill it with desired filling. There is no right or wrong with these Puff Pastry Sheets.

puff-pastry-sheets

One of my creations was some really easy delicious Puff Pastry Peach Tartlets. Not only were they delicious, but my home smelled like Fall all the way through the baking process. The cinnamon and nutmeg combined with fresh peaches created such a wonderful aroma throughout the home. I could not wait for these to bake to eat a FEW!

puff-pastry-peach-tartlets-prep

I began by thawing the Puff Pastry Sheets and then unrolling them like the following image shows. Each sheet (there are two) comes in sections of three rectangular pieces. I cut them apart and then into smaller squares.

puff-pastry-dough

puff-pastry-peach-tartlets-making

I laid each square on a baking sheet. It is helpful to lightly grease the baking pan or use foil or parchment before laying the pastry. Then I added some of the peach mixture (recipe below) to each square and baked them. Yep, it was that easy and ready in a few minutes. I love creating recipes with dough but I always dread the whole dough making process. But these Puff Pastry Sheets made the entire process so simple.

puff-pastry-baked

Once they were out of the oven, I could not wait for them to cool a bit before diving into them. I may have popped a few hot bites in my mouth. Seriously, I ate about 5 right away. But I was on my way out the door for a few minutes so I had to quit eating and get going. When I came back, I ate some more. Later after dinner, this made an awesome dessert with a scoop of ice cream. Basically, I ate way too many.

puff-pastry-peach-tartlets-with-fres-peaches

But Puff Pastry is becoming a favorite around here. I love how easy it is to work with and it may just be the newest addition to our dessert and appetizer list when it comes to entertaining.

puff-pastry-entertaining

Catch a glimpse of some spinach cream cheese rolls and cinnamon swirls I also made. I figured since Puff Pastry is so easy to work with, I would go ahead and create a few different recipes. Appetizers are always a great start to a great meal. Although I must admit that sometimes I eat too much appetizers when they are that good and cannot finish my meal.

So now that I have sang the song about Puff Pastry Sheets, here is the easy recipe I used to make my delicious Puff Pastry Peach Tartlets. Think I am going to try using apples as a substitute for the peaches, too.

And if you need more inspiration, you can find more delicious recipes and ideas by visiting Puff Pastry and try Puff Pastry Sheets for your next Fall entertaining event. You can even find tips, more recipes and exclusive offers every month by signing up for the Puff Pastry newsletter. I was surprised to get two coupons when I opened up the boxes.

Peach Puff Pastry Tartlets for Easy Fall Entertaining

  • 1 pk Pepperidge Farm® Puff Pastry Sheets
  • 4 large peaches washed and sliced
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • Dash ground nutmeg
  • Vanilla ice cream (optional)

Meanwhile, mix sliced peaches, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg together in a bowl. Set aside. Once the pastry is thawed, roll it out and divide each sheet into three pieces using the already pre-cut rectangular sections. Cut each rectangle into 4 smaller squares. Lay them on about an inch apart on prepared baking pans. Divide peach mixture among each square. Bake at 400 for 15 to 20 minutes until the fruit is cooked and the Puff Pastry is golden brown. Our Simple Fall Porch

There is nothing like a beautiful front entrance to welcome your guests, neighbors, and passersby. Why not make your front porch inviting for this Fall?

fall-porch-sitting-area

Yesterday, I shared our frugal Fall dinning table and dinning room, today I am sharing how I made a simple yet inviting Fall front porch that did not cost a fortune. It may not have been as frugal as our dinning room but there are still many frugal aspects of it that I admire. I love sharing all the frugal ways that I decorate – proof that it does not have to be costly to be beautiful. Welcome to our Fall front porch.

I brought in the wreath I shared during our Fall home tour and replaced it with this one that I put together by using a grapevine wreath and faux Fall florals. Then I held everything together with a piece of burlap tied into a bow. It was real easy. I preferred this look of the wreath out front rather than the previous wreath. I think the colors of the entire porch works well with it.

fall-porch-lovely-wreath

As a side note: A few weeks ago, I took a walk around the neighborhood and realized that most of the homes were adorned an accented color front door with beautiful floral wreaths. It looks like everyone appreciates beauty. But when I began changing out the summer porch decor a few weeks ago, I was kind of skeptical that neighbors would wonder what I was doing. It was not fully Fall yet so I decided to keep things at a low profile and added just a touch of Fall. But then one of our neighbors added a pumpkin to their front yard and that gave me the inspiration to finish the porch. As I was taking pictures of the porch last week, I saw many people driving by looking to see what I was doing. I felt good about the porch then – maybe it looked good enough to catch their attention. Hence where the inviting part comes in.

fall-porch-wreath

I did spend a bit on the mums at Walmart. They were the better of the lot even though I payed around $10 for each one. Home Depot had some lovely big ones too but they were a bit pricier. The mat is a new addition because the other one looked like it had seen better days. In some ways, it was kind of free as seen in my Fall home tour. So really, out of my own pocket, I probably spend around $25 with the flowers covering the greater part of $20. Other than this, everything else are being reused and re-purposed.

fall-porch-mums

Even though the mums are still blooming, looks like they could use a bit more care as a few petals are already drying out. Plus I have a few kids who love to pick at flower petals so not sure how long these will last. But they are still beautiful and I love the varying colors of them.

fall-porch-mums

For the sitting area, I used these same chairs from my summer backyard. I brought them around some time at the end of August and we have been enjoying them out front since. Most likely, we’ll spend more time on the porch during the Fall anyway so it made sense to bring the furniture out front.

fall-porch-facebook

A blanket from inside and few throw pillows I had on hand are adding some coziness to the space. And trust me, these are not just there for looks – we have used them already when the weather got chillier. My cozy orange blanket has been around for a few years now and keeps making its appearance around the home during the Fall or just whenever we need to pull out some extras. I added it to the porch a few weeks ago and we love having it to cover up while hanging out here.

fall-porch-blanket

At first, I thought of purchasing some throw pillow covers to cover up the pillows for a more vibrant look. But then I decided to just use what I had. I know the pillows are blue and so are the chair cushions but the orange tends to be a compliment and the blue does not seem so dominant and overwhelming.

fall-porch-pillows

The other side of the porch has pretty much the same colors with a few extra additions. Love my pumpkin patch sign? I bought this arrow during Kohl’s spring clearance around $2 or $3. I thought it was a great idea to add a little Fall something to it. Can you tell how much I love chalkboard from my recent posts?

fall-porch-feature

fall-porch-pumpkin-patch-sign

I added a few pumpkins for the sake of it. Every year, I see all the beautiful Fall front porches online or on Pinterest with loads and loads of pumpkins and think to myself that I will create something similar. But the more pumpkins I added, the more I started to not like the porch. It looked too orange-y and too pumpkin-y. What about white or some other color pumpkin. Lovely, but a bit on the pricier side. A few tiny orange ones on the table were enough to add that pumpkin touch. No one says you have to have pumpkins anyway, but I like the idea of a few. Plus my kids enjoying playing with them when we are hanging out there.

Another reason, I am keeping the pumpkins to minimum is from past experience when squirrels or whatever animal decided to eat all my big outdoor pumpkins, dried corns, and destroy the hay!!! There has to be some kind of spray or something to keep visitors away. I checked in a few stores and the workers seem to have no idea. So few pumpkins it is. And hooray to my summer table plant that is still going strong.

fall-porch-feature

From this angle, you can catch a view of my neighbors beautiful flowers in the background. They have some beautiful plants surrounding their house and ALL of them seem to be in full bloom even if the season is changing.

fall-porch-chair

Here is another view of the porch. It is a bit tricky to take photos of it in full because we have some plants right in front of it. o that is our Fall porch in a nutshell. As you can see, the mums were the only major expense and by major I am talking $20 for two. That is major to me. If I could get real ‘good’ and not half dried out plants for $5, I’d be happy. But I love the look of the porch. It is so simple, uncomplicated, and yet says Fall. Also, I love to hang out there and watch the kids play, catch up on a magazine, or sip on some kind of hot drink.

fall-porch-feature

Want to know a secret? You too can create a simple yet inviting Fall front porch with just a couple additions. If you do not own outdoor furniture, or don’t have a big porch, add a simple DIY wreath to your front door and a couple plants for that quick update and inviting look. Even a pumpkin or two or whatever Fall bushes you may find around the yard, your neighbor’s yard (ha ha), or out in the parks.

Fall Table Setting & How I Created it Frugally

I love a pretty table and enjoy having a separate dinning table to dress it up for the seasons or just because. My family enjoys sitting at the formal dining table occasionally for big meals as much as I enjoy setting the table.

fall-tablescape-hydrangeas

Today I am sharing with you our Fall Table Setting and How I Created it Frugally. It took me a while to figure out what I actually want to use on the table. There are so many options. After playing around with a few ideas for weeks, in just a few minutes one afternoon, I thrashed all ideas and created this frugal table.

fall-table-setting-table-decor

As you already know, my paint colors are not so friendly to me in pictures. But we work with what we have and try to make the best of it. In addition, there is not much furniture in the dinning room except the table and chairs. Although, I think it would be nice to have a buffet or something related to fill the space. But for now, a pretty table is good enough. We have some tall brown bookshelves sitting unused in our garage that I have though of binning in here on multiple occasions. But because they are very tall, they need to be secured to the wall to keep from tipping over. We really do not want to add brackets to the walls, so for now, our bookshelves are unused.

Anyway, back to the table. I decided to do a soup and salad inspired table setting and used dried elements for decorating. Why dry? We don’t eat in the dinning room everyday – we use our breakfast nook. We used the dinning room more on Sundays and on holidays. So while it would be pretty to have real fruit or so on the table, I imagined having to change them out frequently. I feel like the dried elements will keep for a little while longer. If we were going to use the table right away, then the real fruit or bushes would definitely be a great addition.

So here is how I set our table frugally and I know you can do one too. I understand it is very difficult in today’s world of visuals not to want to follow what everyone else is doing. But that is not always the way to happiness. I am learning that seasonal table setting does not always mean purchasing new items.

1.  I began by laying a table running in the middle of the table. It was one I purchased from At Home stores to include in my Fall home tour but I never got around to showing the table. I know I just said a table setting does not necessarily require all new items. The only thing really new specific for the table is the runner. I did not have a table cloth or runner and had no extra linen lying around to make one. So I ended up purchasing this one around $10 which was a super awesome steal.  If you have extra linen and want to make an easy runner, my friend Alli has an easy tutorial. And while you are there, check out her Fall home tour – it is fabulous!!

fall-table-setting

2. I used a simple centerpiece. I had some left over faux hydrangeas, pine cones, acorns, and clear vases and I decided to put them altogether for a simple centerpiece. My clear vases are Dollar Tree inspired and I spray painted the bottom of two with gold spray paint for an up-cycled look. You may have heard me mention that I am selective about Dollar Tree decor because they tend not to last as long. But there are some things that hold their weight. Their line of clear vases always gets me. Each season, I pick up around 3 to 5 of them in different shapes to display seasonal decor. When the season is over, I get rid of them and need them back! So, Dollar Vases, I’m keeping you.

fall-tablescape-centerpiece

fall-tablescape-dishes-and-cups

3. I used our regular dinnerware. We invested in them from IKEA about 3 years ago and they are still going strong. Would I have loved to have something different? Yes, but I don’t have a fancy storage cabinet to display dishes. It would be fun to have one. I only keep our everyday and one other set which is also white with gold rim. And because the ideas behind this Fall table setting is soup and salad inspired, I chose to use bowls rather than regular pates.  The idea of a cozy Fall soup sounds good to me.

fall-tablescape-for-feature

4. I used our everyday silverware. We have enough to keep some extras on the dinning table until we need them there. They are also from IKEA. Our champagne glasses are from my wedding stash.

fall-tablescape-dishes

5. I added napkins that I have owned for a few years now. I have a set of blue, brown, and white. I chose to go with the blue to compliment our overall Fall home decor colors.

fall-tablescape-bowls

fall-tablescape-with-pinecones-and-faux-hydrangeas

6. Pine cones are used as place cards. They are not really “place cards” in their true sense but I love adding one to each bowl. The placemats were also part of what I already had.

fall-tablescape-pinecones-in-bowls

7. And because a pretty table deserve some pretty wall decor to compliment, I added a bit of decor to the surrounding walls. I pretty much used what I had on hand. I picked up this chalkboard from Kohl’s a while ago during their clearance for around $10.

fall-dinning-room-chalk-art

fall-dinning-room-with-chalkboard-art

And my clock came from Kohl’s too for around $7. It was green but since I don’t really own green decor, I painted it white.

fall-table-clock

8. I used printables. For this side of the walls, I could not figure out what to use and thought of leaving it blank. But I had these printables I made sometime in August and some extra picture frames hanging around. That was my instant decor for these spaces.

You can find the link to download the Harvest Blessings printable here. I love how simple it is and how well it depicts all the bountifulness of Fall.

fall-tablescape-harvest-blessings-printable

And the All About Fall printable states a few Fall related happenings. Find the link to download it here. I love creating these printables and sharing them with my readers.

9. I re-used window curtains. These were brought down from another room that does not really need them. They are still not at the length I would like them to be but for now, they are in here.

fall-tablescape-all-about-fall-printable

10. A soft blanket is thrown over one seat for good looks and to add a bit of cozy to the room. I love one simple blanket could add that ‘touch’ to any room.

fall-tablescape-chair-with-blanket

The plate wall was an addition I made earlier this summer. This post can be found here.

All in all, I really love how this setting turned out. It is so fun to walk past the door and look in there. My husband gave me the thumbs up in the few minutes I took to create this. Of course, I had to ask his opinion on how it looked. Also, the kids always think it is time to eat in the dinning room once the table is set. We do eat in there and reset the table when we are done but like I mentioned earlier, it is not an everyday event. But for around $10 bucks and 10 frugal steps later, our Fall table and dinning room is set and we are loving it.

Free Fall Printables

Printables are such an easy way to add decor to any room in the home. I love that they can be made in any way by using images or words or a mix of both and can also be used as a means of inspiration.

fall-home-tour-mantel-decor

I have three beautiful Fall printables for you today. Each one represents some aspect of Fall and will add a special touch to your home. Print them, frame them and use them in your decor. I generally print on regular size paper and use a 11 x 14 frame that is matted to 8 x 10 for framing.

I love this one because I think the saying is so true. Aren’t Fall leaves all so beautiful? Download this one by clicking here: autumn-is-a-second-spring

Fall Home Tour – The Makings of a New Home

Thank you to At Home stores for partnering with us for this year’s Fall tour of homes. #MyReason

Hi friends, hope you are enjoying the beginning of Fall. It certainly has been much cooler around here these past few days. I have been busy adding touches of Fall and coziness to our home. And today, I am opening up my home to you to show you what I have done. I have also teamed up with a group of fabulous ladies who are ready to show you their homes. Be sure to stop by to tour their lovely homes and find tons of inspirations for your own homes.

fall-home-tour-chalkboard

Before you keep touring, let me be honest with you. While I absolutely love sharing my seasonal home with you, this year it is a bit different.  I am excited yet I am feeling a bit vulnerable. You see, a few things happened along the makings of  this Fall home that almost made me did not want to share it. Read on to find out what they were.

We sold our home a few months ago and moved into a rental. I shared some of the reasons why we chose this direction in this post. Apart from the horrible multi-colored paint colors, it is taking me longer to get the house put together than expected. Moving is hard in itself, along with keeping up with everything else. Plus finding things that you actually love (furniture and decor) tends to take a while. But I was beginning to get bored with a “boring” space. I think my kids were kind of getting that feeling a bit, too. Yes, I enjoyed the simplicity of lots of free space and not too much decor for a few months, but I had to do something. Especially since it is Fall, I wanted to get going to add some cozy. But this home still has a long way to go.

fall-decor-porch

Within the makings of this post, my computer dropped and suffered some internal damage. Needless to say, I have been out of my laptop for over five days now – it is in the shop. Thanks to my husband who let me borrow his work laptop so I could type this post. But all my files are on my computer (hopefully still) so it is not the same as using someone else’s computer. Not to mention, both my husband and I were scrambling to share his laptop this weekend because he also needed to get work done for his job.

fall-decor-flowers-pumpkin-wreath

In addition to being out of my laptop, I was out of my normal photo editing app. A few months ago, I decided to upgrade to something better than I was using before for general photo editing. My photos are not as crisp as I hoped for you today. I wanted to share my dinning room but the lighting is not very good and because it has been raining almost all week, my photos did not turn out so well either. There are lost more that I could share because it is like the odds were against me for this post and almost made me loose all the excitement. I will spare you the rest so you would not lose your excitement, too. I have pressed on and added a bit of decor to our family room and a couple areas around it. There are still lots of rooms waiting to get their makeovers but those will have to wait. I am planning to share the rest of our porch and dinning room once I have my computer back. (Find my tutorial for the lovely blue and gold monogrammed pumpkin wreath here). I am hoping you will be able to look past my mishaps and enjoy today’s tour. Shall we?

fall-decor-wreath

I added some Fall decor in various places of the entryway.
fall-home-tour-entryway

fall-home-tour-pumpkin

fall-home-tour-entry-table

My colors for this year revolves around soft blues and gold. I got my inspiration to use gold when I went to At Home stores and saw their fabulous line of gold and white Fall selection. And then I got back home and realized that I had tons of little blue items stored away that I could bring in the mix. There are also a few orange pumpkins and subtle hints of pinks. My girls love anything pink and has been inspiring me to use it more and more in our decor. But we kept orange and yellow at minimum because as you can see, the WHOLE house is ORANGE and YELLOW. Well not all, but most of downstairs. Seriously, if this was not a rental, I would have repainted this long time!!

Gold throw pillows, a blanket or two, blue gold pumpkins, gold white and grey pumpkins, pedestal candle stands, hydrangeas, vases, floor mats, grapevine wreath and a couple other nick-nacks from At Home stores helped pull the space together. And because I have always been a lover of shopping at that store, you may also see a bunch of other items that I previously owned from there. It is one of my favorite stores to shop for home decor items because I find the products well made and so very affordable. I am not just saying this – I have been shopping with At Home stores since before I started partnering with them. I have never given or thrown away a piece of item that I bought from them yet.

You might be able to tell that I like tall decorative things – bottles, candle stands and pedestal decorative things. All things elegantly tall!!

Here is a small office area in the kitchen. Although I have another office desk in the kids playroom, this area here is where I will sit and catch up on an email or two during the day or get something done quickly if I need to.

Despite all the obstacles, I am glad to have a couple spaces that feel somewhat put together. On those cold and chilly Autumn days, our family can have a place of cozy and warmth and spaces that we can actually look forward to enjoying. The kids love to cuddle up and have us read seasonal books to them. We love to chill out and play games or drink hot drinks. Having a cozy decorated home makes all these so much better during the Fall. I feel I can relax and do more with them now that the space is put together.

Pantry Sign for an Easy Pantry Update

When we moved into this house, one of the things I was concerned about is adding nails in the walls. I know it may seem like a small thing to some but a girl’s got to be able to have some freedom to decorate right? So far, I have not added much as I am still figuring out where and what I actually want to add. But that blank space over the pantry was calling for something. I wanted to add some kind of sign but was not sure what I wanted it to say – market, grocery, pantry, etc. Eventually, I decided to stick to the real word and create an easy ‘pantry’ sign to hang above it.

pantry-update

Here was my blank wall. Doesn’t it look like it needed something there?

pantry wall

I used a re-purposed sign and painted over it. Then printed out the word ‘pantry’ in Microsoft to write on the panted wood. You can find a similar full tutorial here. Total cost for this project was zero as I already had everything on hand . Well of course, I had to buy them at some point but you get the idea.

pantry-update-with-ink

I could not wait to fill that blank space once I was satisfied with the look. It is the perfect size – not too large and not too tiny. It is an easy update to the space and that blank wall is not staring at me every time I’m the kitchen.

pantry-update-3

I am realizing that small home updates do not have to cost a fortune. Would it have been easy to go find a sign at a store? Maybe so and maybe not. Sometimes trying to find the right item at the right sore takes a while. I saved money and time by creating this simple one.

What do you think? Was this an easy enough addition that even you could do? I would love to know your thoughts in the comments!

Early Fall Mantel

One of the ways I like to introduce a new season in our home is by changing up the mantel decor. Because it is usually the focal point of a room, it makes sense that it gets done first. Of course, everyone’s style is different and some may choose to leave things as they are. But I do find the possibilities of decorating a mantel endless and find a bit of joy in changing it up seasonally.

fireplace-mantel-pumpkins-and-candlestands

My kids are always asking “When is Fall” or “Is Fall here yet” because they are too little to understand the times of the seasons. To help them gain some kind of understanding as to when Fall begins I decided to bring Fall to our fireplace mantel. I call it an Early Fall Mantel because I most likely will tweak it as the season continues.

This post is part of my monthly inspiration collaboration with At Home stores. You can find so many lovely affordable seasonal and anytime decor by checking out their products here. There is also a giveaway at the end of this post so be sure to leave a meaningful comment to be entered.

fireplace-mantel-mantel-decor

My base decorations for this early Fall fireplace mantel are Fall foliage and pumpkins. After all, these are the staples used for Fall decorating right? I used faux Fall foliage because I have not seen much of the pretty changing real foliage yet. The pumpkins are a mix of real and faux. I was able to find a few real pumpkins to mix in with the faux.

While the colors of the mantel is already painted in typical Fall colors (not by choice), I wanted to still keep the orange color scheme with the decor. Because let’s face it, the kids associate a pumpkin with orange more than any other color. Remember one of the key reasons for the way the mantle is decorated at this point is to help little minds understand when the season begins. But don’t worry, I have a few other uncommon shades of pumpkins that I may use as I eventually switch things up.

fireplace-mantel-real-pumpkins-and-faux-foliage

It took some playing around to get it to look right. Because like I mentioned earlier, the possibilities of mantel decorating are endless. And the paint colors were not helping the situation either. But I am glad it all came together.

fireplace-mantel-full

At the bottom of the fireplace I used a big faux pumpkin and a simple large jar with more Fall foliage. And of course, a big basket of blankets because Fall calls for it. Can’t have too many blankets out during the Fall.

fireplace-mantel-pumpkin

Can we talk about this beauty of an accent chair for a minute? It looks like the perfect spot to curl up in front of the fireplace with a cozy throw and a good book. My kids love climbing on it and getting cozy.

A cozy throw blanket and a beautiful throw pillow completes the look. Notice the basket of blankets is strategically placed right next to the chair. Talk about getting cozy you all!!

Unfortunately, the paint colors in the room coupled with some of the lighting do not seem to cooperate well from this angle. But you can see a full shot of what it looks like in this image. So that is how it is decorated for this beginning of Fall – clean and simple with just the right touches to bring early Fall indoors.
