I don’t usually post much on Thursdays except in the evening going into Friday whenever I do. But Linda from Calling It Home is hosting her yearly One Room Challenge (ORC) where a group of awesome bloggers take on the challenge to transform a space in their homes and show their progress over a period of six weeks. Guess participants (like you and me or whoever) can also link up our rooms via a link-up each Thursday until the end of the challenge. It is a way to stay motivated and get a project done, especially one that you may have been meaning to tackle for a while. If you are not familiar with this challenge, you can read more about it here.
I always love browsing through the transformations of various spaces from the challenge. Since we are in the process of doing a few makeovers around here, I thought it would be fun to show you the progress through one of them. Today I am stepping out of my comfort zone and showing you one of our bathrooms. It is our main bath that we all share since our other bathroom is only a half-bath. The kids still call it theirs because in our previous home they had their own. They’ve been wanting me to put back up their decorations from their previous bathroom but I did not think pretty purple shower curtains could make a not so pretty bathroom pretty. We may have gained other rooms in this home but we lost the privilege of having two full baths.
This bathroom is not the prettiest and I am a little embarrassed to even show the space. When we bought this home, the space was already like this but we figured we’d eventually make it over. It is the number one space in our home that has bugged us especially when guests came over. See for yourself.
I promise you, that while it may not look pretty, it is usually clean. I have a daily bathroom cleaning routine because I cannot stand a dirty bathroom. I always cringe when we go to a buffet type restaurant and one of the kids have to go the bathroom. My mind always think that I may not be able to eat if I see something gross. But it’s like you have to take the kids right then or else they may have an accident – one downfall of potty-trained little kids:) So our bathrooms are generally clean despite their overall makeup.
This was my meager attempt to remove the wall paper. As you can see, I did not get very far. Once I peeled off the top layer and realized there was also a bottom layer, my desire to remove the rest of it quickly waned! Plus, while my husband would like to see the space transformed, I think he has just had it with removing wall paper!
At one point, there used to be some kind of a shelving on the wall over the toilet area. I removed it at the beginning of the year but the screws run deeper than they appear. And so, they are still on the wall.
The cabinets have a vintage look to them which I don’t think is bad at all. But the inside is not the best looking.
A look at the inside of the cabinet.
And then finally, a look at the closet. Not at all organized.
What are our plans? This is not going to be a reap out the old design and construct a new one kind of makeover. But here are the changes as planned:
- Remove Wall Paper
- Remove Vanity and Mirror – Replace with two new medicine cabinets with mirrors included
- Change out Lighting – Replace with brighter fancier lighting
- Change faucets?
- Paint the Bathroom
- Paint inside Cabinet
- Add new accessories
- Organize Closet
I hope you are not judging our space. Some of us tend to have those kind of spaces staring us in the face daily, don’t we? But it is getting a makeover and I am excited to see how how it turns out.
Don’t forget to pop on over at Linda’s blog to check out more not so pretty spaces that will be linked up for this first week. If you are presently working on something, you can always join in on the fun, too. It is opened for all!!!
Do you have one of those not so pretty spaces in your home? I’d love to know about it in the comments.
That should be a fun make-over, best of luck tackling your bathroom in the next six weeks! I’ll look forward to checking out your ideas next week…This is my first ORC so I’m having fun checking out all of the other super creative bloggers doing it too!
I know, there are so many creative bloggers in this challenge. Thanks for following and I will be checking out yours, too.
Best of luck! The worse the starting point the better the transformation right? I can’t wait to see what you do!
Good point – Hoping it would look great:)
I can’t wait to see the finished room! I just recently had both bathrooms remodeled – down to the floor joists and wall studs -everything had to go. I had done all I could so I had to hire a contractor (that was a nightmare itself). It’s finally done and I’ve still got to put some finishing touches (decor) before I reveal them on my blog. Then I realized I forgot to take before photos of the master bath. 🙂 I do have some of the guest bath. I love to see room remodel posts.
Oh come on Alli – we need to see that room. I made sure to grab lots of before photos – it is always amazing to do the comparison!!
Those cabinets are perfection. Is the trim wood? So beautiful. Good luck with removing all that wallpaper, it is hard!
I am participating too. So much fun!
I love the cabinets, too, but the inside is another story. It looks like it is real wood – it was built back then!
I can’t wait to see what the bathroom looks like when you’re done with it!!
Yes, I am hoping I can deliver..LOL!
Hi Zan…The best thing about starting with a room that needs a little help is the great Before and After pictures you’ll have. Removing that wallpaper looks like it will be a challenge in itself 🙂 Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
The before and after photos are always amazing. The wall paper is definitely a challenge. Can’t wait to finish it!
I did a bathroom for the last ORC…You can do it & it will be great! I will be following along as I tackle my own ORC too! Hollie
Hi Holly! Thank you and I plan to follow you along the way, too:)
ooo bathrooms are the ultimate challenge! good luck with the space! can’t wait to see it transform!
Thank you Lianna – Can’t wait to finish it:)
Wow, that wallpaper looks tough! This is going to be a great project, and I can’t wait to see the results. 🙂 Good Luck!

Seriously, that wallpaper looks terrible!
Just think, in 6 weeks you’ll be gawking over how pretty your bathroom is!! 🙂 Can’t wait to see the transformation!
We cannot wait to see how it will turn out, too. It will be a blessing!
I had a bathroom very similar to this for a very long time! It will be so nice to get it updated, can’t wait to see what you do!
I imagine what a release it was for you to get it in shape. We hope for the same!
Great space to work with!! I can’t wait to see what you do 😀
No judgement here, I don’t have a really ugly room but I do have some serious projects to make it that much better throughout my apartment. Good luck!!
I can see some new paint on the cabinet with some pretty handles with some new fancy faucets :). I actually kind of like the gold accessories you can make those work easily!

Hey hey Lauren! Yes, it is a great space to work with. I think it will look nice with a little gold, too!!! Thanks:)
This will be a labor of love but you can do it! Best of luck, can’t wait to see the finished results.
A labor of love for sure. We would love to have a prettier space:)
I’m doing a bathroom, too, so it will be fun to follow along with you. My former house had a similar bathroom and 3 layers of wallpaper. Yikes! You can do it!
3 layers of wallpaper sure is a lot. Ours had two and it was difficult to remove. It will be fun to see your new renovation:)
