Beaded Bracelets and Necklaces for Kids

Thanks for Sharing!

These bead bracelets and necklaces are so fun to make, the kids love making and wearing them, and they can easily be given as gifts for friends.DIY Beaded nd Necklaces - For Kids - Valentines or Any Day Craft - At Home With Zan

I pulled out the beads and told the kids we were going to make bracelets. They were ecstatic since it’s been some time since we last made them. They loved choosing their very own colors and coming up with their own patterns and it was so fun to watch. Once they got their creations done, they decided to make necklaces, too. Why not? After all, we had these beads for a few years now (when we did a ton of crafts) but with one child starting school and trying to keep up with things, we just have not done much of these types of crafts. She has been doing the crafts from her school book which are usually some kind of paper crafts with the addition of craft eyes, fuzzy sticks, pompoms and so on. The other kids have been doing some similar ones, too, along with some painting and sensory bins and whatever else we throw in the mix.

In any event, I thought it would be fun to make these bracelets again like we used to. A few years ago, the girls made some for their friends for Valentine’s. I don’t know if they want to do that again but I imagine they wouldn’t be opposed to the idea.

Creating these beaded crafts are good for helping the kids practice their fine motor skills. They could be a little frustrating for tiny kids, though. Our 3 year old made his bracelet but I let him use beads with larger openings so they would be easier to thread. Note: Smaller kids of this age will need to be monitored with these small beads if they like to put everything in their mouths. At one point, I had to keep these beads away from this little one but, too.

To make bracelets you’ll need:

  • Pony Beads (or beads with letters)
  • Twine (thick enough but a size the beads will fit through)

Directions:

  • Measure the size of your child’s hand and cut out a piece of twine double the size.
  • Tie a knot close to the middle on one end of the twine (this will keep the beads from falling out on the other end as the kids thread them)
  • Thread the beads in a desired pattern
  • Once done threading, tie the other end. Make sure the knots are large enough to prevent the beads from falling out.
  • Tie the bracelet loosely around your child’s hand. Cut out any extra twine.
  • Note: I tie them loosely so they can be easily untied for removing. If you want to get even fancier, you could add some jewelry hooks.

If you are using beads with letters on them, simply use them to create names. Here I made this one with the name Kara. I placed a heart between the KA and RA for a little more emphasis.

Your kids can make these as Friendship Bracelets for their friends with their names (we have done this in the past). Just have them not tie the bracelets when they are done making them. Leave them opened and mail them like that. The kids parents will measure their hands and adjust the strings to suit the sizes.

You can also use a mix of Pony beads and letter beads to make them. Like what the kids did in this next photo. They only used the letter of their first names in the middle of the pony beads. Our girls love the letters but we did not have enough to create all their names and I forgot to get some more from the stores. So we just used whatever we had on hand and got creative.

To make the necklaces, you could use a lot of beads to cover the necklace fully with just enough extra twine to tie at the back or use a little bit of beads only for the middle of the necklace (like we did in the photos). The beads don’t go all the way around.

You may see in the necklace here on the right an extra knot. I had cut the string a little too short so simply tied on an extra piece when the kid was done threading her creation. I didn’t want her to have to start all over. They don’t have to be all perfect. They are simply kids who love to create and admire their fabulous creations.
