Characteristics of a Biblical Homemaker from Proverbs 14 – Building Wisely

Thanks for Sharing!

Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands (Proverbs 14:1, KJV).

Have you, as a homemaker, ever wondered if you are building up your home according to Scriptural commands? This type of ‘building up; is not just referring to the actual act of constructing a beautiful house from wood or brick.ย Rather, it is theย internal welfare, management, and growth of the family in the home. There are so many verses in the bible that tell us what this should actual look like. We’ve already seen some heavy examples here and here via my previous posts in this series. But really, homemaking is not such an easy tasks as some seem to make it.

A wise Woman

When it comes to ‘building up’ our homes, we should consider it a very seriously just as a husband may consider his job outside the home seriously. As he works diligent to provide for the household so should we work diligently to provide for the ‘building up’ of our home. The bible says, that a ‘wise’ย woman builds her home: but the foolish will pluck it down. Let’s look at the first part of the verse and how a wise woman will build her home.

Remember Proverbs 31:10-31 and all the qualities we saw there of a virtuous woman? Well, these are the qualities that can be applied here in Proverbs 14. It is a perfect picture of howย a wise woman builds her home. She does so by:

  • loving and submitting to her husband
  • properly caring for her children
  • managing financesย well
  • not being lackadaisical
  • not being idle
  • increasing the wealth of home
  • beingย diligent
  • being industrious
  • not beingย wasteful
  • willingly to be resourceful

On the other hand, the latter part of the verse speaks of foolish woman who is quite the opposite of the woman who wisely builds. Have you ever seen TV shows where the foolish women come in and try to destroy families. That is exactly what comes to my mind when I think about ‘foolish’ women who plucks down. Except in this verse, it is probably more referring to the woman of the home. A foolish homemaker will pluck down her home by:

  • nagging her husband
  • wastefully spending
  • sitting around lackadaisically and doing nothingย valuable
  • desiring more and more with discontentment
  • not seeking to be industrious around the home

And we could add tons more to the list! But as wives and homemakers we should desire the former part of the verse – to be women who ‘build wisely’. While we know that we may make mistakes every now and again, that should not stop us from desiring to do what is right.

How are you doing with your home? Are you wisely building or are you mindlessly tearing down? I encourage you today to take a few minutes to re-evaluate and ask God to help you make the necessary changes. I know I need to do the same in many areas ’cause I ain’tย got it all together! I would love to know where you are in the comments below!

  1. Great post, very inspirational as a homemaker myself. Not working I can’t do much to contribute to the financial aspect of things but I do my best to be a dutiful wife and mother in exchange for my ability to be home. I haven’t put much thought into the biblical aspect of my doing so, but now I will keep that part in mind as well! God bless! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Thanks for the reminder Zan! I have been struggling with my productivity lately making me a poor home builder. I will remember this every time I’m tempted to be lazy.
