We made a Fall porch statement with mums, lanterns, and kid-painted pumpkins
Every time I walk up to the porch I just smile and want to take a photo. I’m just so pleased how it turned out. My hubby complimented how beautiful it looks and the kids mentioned how the house looks like a different house now. Catch the mantle here.
Decorating the Front Porch for Fall
I knew I wanted to decorate the porch for Fall even though we are still working around the inside of our home. I think the outside of a home should be organized and pretty just as the inside, especially since it creates a first impression. Since we moved in, our porch hasn’t been decorated at all. I didn’t do a DIY Spring Wreath and neither did I find the exact style I was looking for. So our front door stood bare. Then summer came along and same thing happened except we ended up adding all kinds of outdoor kid toys out front. Our previous homes had garages that housed the kids outdoor toys. Now we don’t have a garage so finding a spot to keep things was tricky. I thought of some kind of outdoor storage cabinet. That too hasn’t come to fruition yet.
Once I cleaned out the porch, I got to decorating. I got this wreath from Big Lots. I made a DIY Fall wreathย since I threw or gave away the one I previous made during our move. But when I saw this style and color, I knew I like it. I didn’t get it the first time but kept thinking about it so eventually got it on sale. I
Outdoor Seating
All Spring and summer long I’ve searched and searched for the right outdoor chair set. We didn’t move with the ones we previously had since the legs had some issues. So I wanted a new set. We had some small chairs that we placed on the porch on move in day until we found a seating set. The ideas I saw online that I would have liked to buy were a little pricey and the second option wasn’t that pricey but not that cheap either. Enter Home Depot!! I went looking for chrysanthemums and came home with chairs instead. They were half off and came with the neutral padding:) I was so excited to find them. Nice neutral color and perfect set for the size our porch. I thought maybe I’d look into adding some back pads and an extra pillows. But looks great for now. As for the mums, there was not a huge selection of them with varying colours yet, so I decided to wait. I ended up getting them later at Walmart.
Once I got the chairs, I felt it was time to add a touch of beauty and cozy to the porch. I used a large blanket scarf and a pillow cover I had on hand to dress them up for Fall. The sign is a re-purposed DIY. I do have a tutorial for it but have not gotten around to sharing it. Everything fell into place “nicely”. No not really. It took me a few weeks to get it done. I had planned to get all the items I needed for the porch so I could have it done by the official Fall date. Yet I found myself unable to get everything I needed at one time (mainly referring to the pumpkins, pots, and mums). Somehow, I would buy two mums only to realize I should have gotten 4. Or I would by two pumpkins and realized that I had to get more. Or the flower pots weren’t the correct colour or not enough (I ended up just spray painting the two metal ones, they were gold). And I just kept on adding a thing here and there until the porch came together. Evidence that I’m just now posting this into October:)
One of the kids summer plants that’s just starting to bloom. We couldn’t bare to put it away so we left it on the porch – just moved it to this corner. Looks really great here since it’s growing too tall and a bit too tall for the front step where it was.
This look right here is definitely one of my favorites. I find that the porch is kind of simple yet so colourful and just brings out the colours of the season. But my all-time favorite items on the porch are the kids painted pumpkins. We went to the pumpkin patch at the beginning of Fall and got a few pumpkins. We were saving them inside so they wouldn’t get ruined quickly but after making one too many trips and finding that pumpkins are pricey this year, we decided to put them outside after painting. I love that their work can be displayed like this!!
Few other up close details – chrysanthemums and pots are from Walmart. I love the mixture of the mums in the silver pots (the pink, orange, and yellow all in one. I wanted to off set just a bunch of yellow mums but I didn’t want to add too many pots of plants. So happy to have found the ones already mixed. The two silver pots were originally gold. I bought them last year at Walmart (they worked well with our other house) but now they just don’t go well with the paint colors of this porch. I gave them a little spray paint makeover after not finding the silver pots I wanted. The lightbulb hit and I thought why not just spray these? I think the silver looks better here.
Late evening shot with the lanterns lit. I don’t lit them often yet since we have not been on the porch that much since decorating. Along with that it’s been raining here these past few days. But I would turn them on if we are hanging out on the porch in the evening and hopefully turn them off during the night (saves battery).
