Our family room got a little spruced up for the holidays and I am loving how it came coming together. Actually, at the beginning of the season, I added our colourful holiday throw and eventually the Family Christmas tree for the kids handmade ornaments and called it a day. Once we got some new items though, I went ahead and sprinkled just a few more holiday decor around the room and just love it so much.

Functional, Organized Family Room for Everyone to Enjoy

The room ties in with our kitchen and breakfast area, it’s just one big opened space. When we were moving, my husband asked what I would do with the space. I knew I wanted it to be a hangout spot for the family, that’s organized and functional for everyone (not just for looks) but I had no idea where I would begin. Things just were not coming together as fast as I hoped. With a little help with with products from Wayfair I was able to pull the space together quickly. These products are linked throughout this post and also at the bottom of the post. I love Wayfair, it’s usually one of the first places I search when it comes to purchasing home decor online.

However, most of our wall decor are still in our storage since I didn’t want to put up anything in a room that was still needed some work to create the space. You may notice that some of the walls are almost empty. (I am learning that creating a new home does not happen overnight – it takes time and money because some of the items from your previous home may not always work in the new space). I used some of our mirrors on one wall to open up the room a little bit more. It’s said that mirrors make spaces appear larger than. I didn’t want to add much – just a couple.

When we first moved in, the movers placed our old set of couches in here. It was not my intent but I was not on site when they unloaded the truck. So we just left the couches where they were but they looked so dark and took up so much space that eventually I moved them to the living room. (Photo of when we first moved in)

Then after a long search we bought this new small sectional – it seemed to light up the room and created more space. I separated the pieces – it works better this way for this corner. Although, my husband preferred them joined on so he can stretch out after a long day or when he’s working on his laptop or simply relaxing:)

Coffee Table and End Table Set

Now that we had seating that we enjoyed, I wanted to added some storage and a place to put items, games, coffee mugs and drinks, Tv controls, etc. You know, all those little things that “needs” to be on a table top.

The End Table make such a difference. It comes as a matching set with extra storage at the bottom. There are so many options of round coffee tables that I had a difficult time choosing. Once the set arrived and got set up and decorated, we were pretty happy!

I set two baskets (one under each) for extra blankets and board games. I used to try to figure out where to keep the board games and moved them all over the place trying to find that perfect spot. The blankets too used to be in a basket just beside the couch. But because the room is not that big I knew having end tables with storage would work wonders in keeping things organized.

Ever since setting them up, I have not once moved the blankets or games from their spot, except for using them and then they simply go back where they belong. Plus I also have a place to set down a cup of warm drink or something when I’m on the couch. I love it!

The Coffee Table

The previous coffee table in here used to have an extra stand where I kept the kids Legos and other baskets of toys. However, it was just too big for the small space. I needed something smaller. Although this one does not have the extra stand it fits better, doesn’t feel crowded, and the kids (and us) can still use it to play games on it (the board games kept under the end tables). These tables from Wayfair are making all the difference in how the room is organized. They keep everything neat!!

The Play Area

I call it the play and reading area because it holds the books and toys. It’s kept organized by cubicals and baskets. Originally, I didn’t know what I wanted to add to this wall. Then I thought of a set of bookshelves. However, the kids love having their toys in this room.

When we first moved the organizers were in what we call the playroom/office but the kids seem to love playing here in the family room so I brought over the cubicals. The kids play with their toys so much more here and I did not have the heart to switch these out for bookshelves anymore. Every toy has a spot in a bin – the kids know exactly where they go. They often tell me that I’m putting them in the wrong bins:)

When I was about to take the photos I wondered if I should change out these cubed bookcases or switch out the baskets out until after the photos then put them back. But then I thought, “why go through the trouble?”. We have kids and they love their toy organization system so there is absolutely no point in switching them just for photos. NOTHING’s wrong with them.

The tree is full of handmade ornaments from the kids. It usually has a ton more but we went ahead and did away with what’s broken or what seems to cluttered and used their old and new favorites. You can see our main tree in our living room here. I shared a small tour of the space yesterday.

The TV Area

I added some greenery around the TV and a few favorite family photos above the TV wall. I’ve always kept some books organized under the TV stand, just as much as it could hold. All DVDs and CDs (do people still use these) are kept in the drawers.

Finally, the rug sort of ties everything together. It bought it for the breakfast table area to keep the chairs and table from sliding and also from scraping the floor. After a few days of use, I thought maybe I should try it out in the family room. Everyone agrees that it is a better fit for the family room and I couldn’t agree more! So now to figure the breakfast area out.

Overall, I love how the space turned has turned out for the holidays. There are still some other areas to focus on such as the wall above the kids play area, maybe another small chair on that same side next to the TV or but for now, we are content. We have furniture and that is helping to keep the space organized in a family-friendly fashion.
