Growing in Grace: God’s Desire For Our Growth

Thanks for Sharing!

It’s been a little while since I have posted on this series. It seems like I have been trying to play catch-up with my posts. This is due in part because I have cut out the late-night blogging times. And I barely have time during the day to write, anymore. In addition, when I do find a minute to type a spiritual post, it is the very time that my computer will decide to crash. Or other unnecessary distractions will occur.

But I have been reading and learning from God’s word. God has been teaching me; now I just have to depend on Him to help me grow. Trust me, it is a struggle.

Today we are going to discuss God’s Desire for our need to grow in grace. It is the sequel to the previous post on our Recognition of the need to grow in grace.

Although we are to do our part and obey God’s command to grow in grace (1 Peter 2:2), God sometimes brings circumstances or situations (struggles) in our lives that will help us to Grow. Here are a few scripture references that teach us about this concept. And here is what Elyse Fitzpatrick commented on each reference in regards to why God brings struggles:

2 Corinthians 1:3-10 : To help us experience His comfort and be able to comfort others

Romans 5:3-5: To help us grow in hope

Hebrews 12:10-11: To help us grow in holiness

1 Peter 1:7: To help us grow in faith

James 1:3-4: To strengthen us

Romans 8:28-29: To help our character to reflect Christ

1 Peter 5:5-7: To humble us and help us return to Him

1 Peter 4:13: To help produce God focused rejoicing in us (Fitzpatrick, 2001, pg.133-134).

No one likes to face struggles. But when we do, it is up to us to see them as God’s way of helping us to grow in Him. So let us take our struggles before the throne of Grace!

  1. Thank you for the reminder that it is God who wants us to grow, who helps us to grow, who gives us grace. I was just reading Romans 8:28-29 this morning. It is interesting how those two verses go together. If we separate them, we might thing the good promised in 28 is wealth and a easy life, but verse 29 explains what kind of good God has in his plan: “to be conformed to the image of his Son” As you say – To help our character to reflect Christ. Wow!

  2. I believe this with my whole heart! Every struggle in my life that God has allowed to occur and helped me through has made me trust him more and have more compassion for others. When my husband became suddenly disabled and we lost his income, I had no choice but to totally trust God for very basic needs for several months, and you know what! He was faithful and provided. I was so amazed! And the whole ordeal has made me a cheerful giver, because I know God will take care of me. And it’s made me more compassionate to the struggles of physically handicap people. God is good! His plan is perfect!

  3. I love how you highlighted the important virtues that God tries to teach us through our struggles. Great post, thanks for sharing with my Small Victories Sunday linky. Pinning and sharing! The design looks great by the way!

  4. I’ve always said that if we are not growing in the things of God, it won’t be long before we are going in the other direction. I once was speaking on this subject and I mentioned that people freeze to death one degree at a time, without even realizing it. I guess we could say that we grow one degree at a time . . . changing from glory to glory.

Thanks for sharing your words of wisdom with us.

  5. Struggles and trials are hard, but when we are pressing in to Christ, there is such rich fruit that is produced in the valley. We often don’t even realize it until we look back and see in comparison how much more we have been changed into the likeness of Christ. Our family is coming out of one of the hardest years since my husband and I were first married and it’s exciting to begin to see some of the fruit that was produced in that season. Thank you for sharing with us, Zan!
