Our Living Room and Dining Room Decorated for the Holidays

Holiday Home 2018 - Holiday Wreath - Front Door - At Home With Zan

I was not planning to share these rooms at all. In fact, I didn’t have a plan of decorating of a specific colour scheme or anything sort of planning to decorate for the Holidays. All I wanted to do was add a few sprinkling of cheer throughout these rooms. However, I was taking photos of another room and thought I would throw these in there too since they came out a little more decorated than I anticipated. So here they are – definitely not as much as I have done in the past, though. The tree game me a ton of frustrations while setting it up this year and I almost thought of taking it down, but I left it. Now that it’s all set up we are enjoying the lights and coziness.

One of the reasons I was not planning to decorate is because the house itself is still in the making since we moved. The walls a are bare and we want to add some kind of focal point where the console by the manger wall. But we know that creating a new home takes a while. So here are some photos. Enjoy!

In our everyday decor, I have been using touches of pink (as inspired by little girls). This year, while we were setting up the tree the kids used some of their ornaments and added them to the tree, pinks and blues. I think I was planning a silver, gold, and red color scheme with the ornaments we already had but I like the colourful touches. Since I wanted the kids to save some for their very own little trees in their rooms, I went out and got some more pinkย of the colourful ones.

Sometimes as adults we could get stuck in how we want our homes to look but kids come along and gives us different insights:)

The entryway from all angles is kept organized with cubicals and a table I’d previously purchased from Wayfair. It’s skinny enough for the entrance. I recently found the baskets from Hobby Lobby at Half off. I couldn’t pass them up. I had a set of smaller ones (same design) from Hobby Lobby that fit the console table perfectly as far as the size. They were literally THE BEST baskets I’ve bought to keep our mail organized. Finally!!! All mail is put into the basket upon entry and when the basket gets full, we go through and sort them out. It’s being keeping the mail from ending up all over the house.

While the smaller size baskets worked perfectly, I always wanted to add a third one but it wouldn’t fit all the way. While out and about at Hobby Lobby I spotted these larger ones on sale so quickly bought two of them. They fill the the bottom of the table nicely but a little wider than the smaller ones. The other basket is holding my winter gear (hats, scarves, gloves).

We don’t have a mantle this year so I did not know where to hang the stockings. I didn’t want to put too many holes in the walls. And then it dawned on me to just use the stairs. I kept it simple with just a faux garland and the stockings. I really wanted to put them up since we’d all picked out our favorites. The kids love them!

I always love creating a hot drink station when the weather gets cool and a hot cocoa station at some point for us to enjoy. I went ahead and combined both and just left it up for when we are ready to use. Since I’d set it up prior to the photos it ended up as part of the tour.

I was so excited about this hot water thermos that it inspired me to set up the station right away! It is supposed to keep water hot 12 hours and warm for another 12 or so. But I think it keeps it hot longer. It is a great way to pre-boil water and keep it in here so tea or hot drink would be ready in seconds on colder days. It means, I can prep ahead water on snowy days for tea or milk for hot cocoa (even the hot cocoa itself). I always find myself having to heat up water every time the kids come in from the cold (whether it be from playing in the snow, from school, or any other cold weather outdoor activity).ย It’s a new favorite. We could also take it in the car for car rides on cold days or nights.

So that’s all for this part of the house. I am working on the family room photos to share too. I hope you enjoyed the tour. You can also see our holiday family room here.
