Painting Pumpkins With Kids

Thanks for Sharing!

I was about to paint some pumpkins and thought I would set out a few so the kids could paint along. So we gathered our pumpkins, paints, brushes, and got to work. It took the kids about 20 minutes to get their creations done. I really love how they turned out because you know, you gotta love the kiddos creations. The ones I created took a bit longer since it involved panting the pumpkins fully and letting them dry between two or three coats. You can find them in this post on gold and white painted pumpkins.

What you need:

  • Pumpkins – We used faux ones from the Dollar Tree
  • Paint colors of choice (The kids used acrylic)
  • Paint brushes (in a few sizes)
  • Scrap paper

What to do:

  • Spread out scrap paper in the dedicated paint corner
  • Set pumpkins on the scrap paper
  • Allow to the kids to paint pumpkins in using their own imaginations
  • Allow pumpkins to dry. They only did one coat of each paint since they used colored paint.

Here are close-ups of what each one did.

  • Multi-Colored Pumpkins – Use a few different colors to paint pumpkin(s). Let dry. Example from our 2 year old that the smaller kids could do.
  • Patterned Painted Pumpkins –  Use two to three different colors of paint. Start by painting with one then alternating with the other. Example from our 6 year old. Example from our 4 year old.

The kids couldn’t be happier about their creations and so was I. At first, I kinda wanted them to paint in colors to go with a few decorative ideas in the house. But you know, kids don’t see all this decor stuff like we do, so I let them paint in whatever colors they wanted (well, still sort of sticking to certain Fall colors).

We are displaying these pumpkins as part of the few autumn decor we have around here. There is no point in hiding them – the kids work is much valued as even more special because they made them. So here they are.

What do you think? Do you decorate with crafts made by your kids or do you stash them away? I’d love to know in the comments.
