Teaching Beginning Alphabet Sounds to Preschoolers – With Printables

Thanks for Sharing!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, we do some homeschooling with our 3 year old daughter. We started off this Fall school year by reviewing colors, a bit of tracing, and shapes. If you would like to see the post on some of the ideas we used to review colors, go here.

Then we moved right into our phonetic sounds. We are having a blast with it! Our little 3 year old daughter already knows some of her sounds from previous times, DVDs, Books, etc.

Below is a sample of the curriculum we are using. We started using this type of curriculum since last year (the smaller version). It is filled with all kinds of preschool worksheets – more than just phonics. A great book for preschoolers!

And here is a supplemental little work book I found at Target for $1. I use it along with the curriculum above for reinforcement.

In addition to these two workbooks, I have created some printables, with teacher instructions included, to assist the learning process. See them below. Go here to Alphabet Beginning Sounds Worksheets to download this PDF pack.

And here are some fun ABC playdough mats for learning the alphabet. Go here to ABC Playdough Mats to download this PDF pack.

You can download all three PDF packs in one document here at Alpabeth Preschool Pack or use the individual links above for each one.

Further, I created an apple alphabet tree and she puts up the letters on the tree as we discuss them. I found those apple cut-outs at Target on sale, around $3.49 I believe. You’ve got to love Target!

As an Elementary Education teacher, I firmly believe in hands on learning.  I have seen great results both in the classroom and at home with children who get to practice what they are learning by using manipulatives.

An excellent additonal resource that the kids can probably watch one time a week is this LeapFrog letter factory DVD. Our 3 year old has been watching it since she was two, and now knows the letter sounds.

The curriculum above was found at Amazon.com. See the following links:

Like I mentioned earlier, we are truly have fun learning the ABCs and their beginning sounds. Remember, our toddler is only 3 years old and we are at home, so nothing is set in stone. I mean, some days we get more done than other days. Other days, we get nothing done! But that is OK, too.

If you are a homeschooling mom with young children, have you taught them the alphabet yet? If so, what methods do you use? I would love to hear from you!

  1. What a fun way to learn the alphabet and phonics! Sadly, some of our local elementary schools did away with phonics years ago in favor of whole language.

When I was the principal for a Christian school for over 10 years, we would give a placement test to kids that transferred to our school. They usually scored poorly in reading comprehension.

You are doing an awesome job with your preschooler. Pinning!

  2. I grew up learning phonics but I know they have gotten away from it in the public school system. All those fun Home Schooling materials almost makes me wish I had a small child to homeschool!
Pinning to my Homeschooling board for others to enjoy.

  3. Love, love all these ideas. Will definitely be back to your site for more. I too, was an elementary teacher.
Planning to home school my 14 mo grand baby.
