The kids and I made these cookies and they turned out so pretty. That’s the one thing about seasonal cookies and sprinkles. Just add colorful sprinkles to match the season and it will turn any cookie into a seasonal cookie. I love it when I get the opportunity to bake with the kids. We don’t do it as much as before since the kids are in school. But we try to take the time every now and again to cook together and create recipes such as these Heart-shaped Valentine’s cookies.

In attempt to make them just a tad less sugar, I only added 1 cup of Cane Sugar. I also used some Organic Powdered Sugar some of the frosting. I usually have the regular powdered sugar but discovered the organic one and wanted to try it out.

Valentine’s Day Cookies

Ingredients

  • 2-1/2 Cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 Cup cane sugar
  • 2 Sticks butter
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla blend (or 2 teaspoons vanilla)
  • Sprinkles
  • Frosting
  • Heart-shaped cookie cutters
  • Circle cookie cutters

Frosting

  • 2 Cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 1 Tablespoon cream cheese
  • 2 Tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon Almond extract

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside. Combine flour, baking powder and baking soda in a small bowl. Set aside. In a large bowl, beat together butter, sugar and egg. Beat in vanilla. Stir in flour mixture until it forms a dough. Turn out on a floured surface, then roll out. Using the heart cookie cutters, cut out shapes of cookies.

For the O, use the larger circle cookie cutter to cut out one shape. Then use the smaller one to cut out the center of the circle to make it into an O. For the X, cut two 2″ long x 1/2″ wide rectangular pieces then place them together in the shape of an x.

Place cookies on baking sheets and bake for 8 minutes. Remove cookies from the oven and allow them to for 2 minutes. Move them to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

Frosting:

Using a mixer, beat together butter and cream cheese until smooth. Mix in vanilla and Almond extract. Add powdered sugar and milk, beat together. Add in a teaspoon more milk depending on how you want the consistency of the frosting. Frost cookies, immediately decorate with sprinkles. Have fun and enjoy!
