DIY Cereal Box Valentine’s Boxes

These Valentine’s Day Treat Boxes are super cute and are easy and fun to make for Valentine’s Day!

Valentine's Day Treat Boxes

Have any cereal boxes laying around? Why not have the kids use them to make their own Valentine’s Day boxes? My kids did and I think they turned out very pretty.

Valentine's Day Treat Boxes - DIY - athomewithzan.com

You buy ready-made boxes from the store and use them as is or embellish them with Valentine’s day color items. But creating our own from things we had on hand, turned out too cute and was so much fun to do. I even helped and enjoyed the process.

Originally, I had discussed making boxes with the kids then while out at the store, decided to go with some pre-made ones. We ended up putting them back later. I’m happy we did because I really wanted to try making them from scratch this time.

I remember making cereal box crafts as a kid. The outcomes were very fun to look at. I wanted to let my kids try a craft with cereal boxes too. Not only as a way to create something fun out of a box but also as a way to show the kids that these boxes can be recycled and repurposed and designed as they liked.

My kids enjoyed making them and they are ready for the Valentine’s fairy to fill (A.K.A mom or mom and dad).

Looking for an easy treat for your kiddos on Valentine’s day? Rice crispies are very easy and if your kids love them, they will enjoy the pink color of these favored treats. The cool thing about Rice Crispy is that they can be made for any holiday or any occasion by simply changing the color or adding toppings or add-ins. We aren’t too big on the add-ins or toppings for Rice Crispies but we did add a little bit of sprinkles this time.

Valentines-Day-Cookie-Recipe-Sugar-Cookie-Recipe-athomewithzan.com

Holiday cookies are so fun to make with a variety of ways to bake and decorate them, especially sugar cookies. I don’t enjoy fully baked sugar cookies from the groceries as much. I like to bake them. While I enjoy making sugar cookies from scratch, I’m under the impression that they are also enjoyable getting them premade, either ready to mix or ready to bake. After all, a sugar cookie will most-likely contain sugar whether they are homemade or premade store-bought.

In any event, as I we were out shopping at Walmart sometime in January and seeing all of the Valentine’s goodies on display, I decided to get a couple of ingredients to make some Valentine’s Sugar Cookies. I picked up a frozen pk of Sugar cookie dough and a tub of pink frosting that was on a Valentine’s baking shelf.

9th Birthday Party Ideas for Kids – Our Son’s 9th Birthday Party

Happy 9th Birthday to my boy!

Ah my baby boy is growing up! I just can’t. He’s too cute. I came to the conclusion that it was very true when others talked about missing the tinier days with their children. “Life” was just simple:

  • play all day
  • no school or homework to worry about
  • most little activities and outing’s brought happiness (anything from a blow-up pool of water in the backyard to a trip to the most exquisite beach).

9th-Birthday-Party-Ideas-athomewithzan.com

The simple joy’s brought me joy just as it brought my own kids. But growing up is a part of their childhood and we simply need to embrace where we are in our different season. So here we are at 9 and this is what I shared on Instagram:

“To my sweet little boy – 9 seems unreal on you. You were my little shadow just a few years ago, we did everything together, especially in a year when the girls were in school and even when they were homeschooled, finding activities to do with you while they were learning was so fun. What a joy to always have had you by my side. I miss those tender little ages. But here we are, embracing the season of growing up because children are a blessing and growing up is part of that blessing!!”

Let’s embrace our children growing up mamas. Every season is an opportunity to discover the new  joys that come with growing up.

She looketh well to the ways of her household and eateth not the bread of idleness (Proverbs 31:27).

11th Birthday Party Ideas – Christmas Birthday Ideas

Use these ideas from our daughter’s 11th birthday party at Christmas as an inspiration for your Christmas kid’s next birthday party! This post contains affiliate links for your convenience.

11th-Birthday-Party-Ideas -athomewithzan.com

Our second daughter’s birthday is December 22 and this year, we did her a party on her actual birthday. I don’t remember the last time we actually did this since the holidays can be quite the time when everyone is out of town. It’s usually a week or couple days before.

This year, we decided to go ahead with the day of her birthday, especially knowing that our son’s birthday was the following week and we just didn’t want to push back her party this time. Last year, we were travelling and did her party mid-January, together with our son’s.

Gingerbread Decor – Slumber Party – Christmas Birthday Theme

We discussed doing a birthday theme with Gingerbread decorations, then have gingerbread making, a hot cocoa station, s’more roasting, etc… Since the theme was “Slumber Party” we mixed the two with some Gingerbread décor and some “night time.” There are so many ways you can go around the holidays. Such a fun time. The only thing is figuring out activities they can do to keep them busy the duration of the time. Yes, you can do a bunch of holiday games if you are willing too for the evening… but for a mix of ages, including kids who are 10 & 11, we wanted to make sure they were entertained all through. They may have fancy hot cocoa, roast marshmallows on a fire, and build & decorate a gingerbread house but what will the actual main activity be that would keep their attention during the party?

Ropes Obstacle Course

WE did a rope obstacle course the day before her birthday. Well, the kids did the course, the parents just got them there. They seemed to have a ton of fun climbing the ropes and going through the course. It was the one outdoor activity our daughter requested to do for her birthday with her family.

Kids Birthday Party Ideas for Christmas Time Birthdays

For 11, if you can, you may can think of doing a spa party for girls. Just make sure the spa activities will hold their attention so you’re not trying to figure out what to do next. We were going to do a spa and I knew I didn’t want to mess things up so was going to hire someone to do it. But then I thought of the smaller kids and boys that would be coming along with the 10 and 11 year olds, and decided to go with a bubble house instead. Something they can jump in for the evening along with some games while they enjoy the delicate holiday themed food stations.

11th-Birthday-Party-Ideas -athomewithzan.com

11th-Birthday-Party-Ideas -athomewithzan.com

Here are some ideas for a birthday party during the Christmas holidays

  • Gingerbread Theme – With gingerbread house decorating as an activity
  • Hot Chocolate Theme – With a Hot Chocolate bar self serve
  • Smore’s Themed – With a marshmallow roasting and s’mores making
  •  Movie Theme – With a Holiday movie, popcorn, snacks, etc.
  •  Ice-Skating – Ice-skating, and hot chocolate
  • Nutcracker theme (this one just popped in my head) – Watch the polar express and serve hot cocoa (I just thought, you could pick any favorite holiday kids movie and build a theme around it. Like The Grinch – Have the kids come in green or Grinch type clothing. Watch the Grinch movie, play a few Grinch games, make a Grinch craft, and serve up a bunch of green food and drinks. Hmmm, that idea sounds good to me.

Depending on the kids ages, it may be help to have an alternate activity for any of these parties. In efforts to avoid boredom, if you can afford, bring in someone to help with games, or hire a party gamer, Princess, Spa professional, a bounce house (they will come and set it up and come back to take it down – well they have done ours twice so it may be helpful to know how they do things in your area first). I hope these ideas will help you out at your next holiday birthday party.

The Cake for the Birthday in Focus

This is the simplest cake I’ve ever seen her pick for her birthday. Vanilla cake with white buttercream frosting and orange and pink roses with green leaves. Funny that coincidentally, it went well with the gingerbread paper plates, napkins and red and green plastic forks I had bought. She was not trying to match the designs and some of the colors because I believe she went with dad to pick the cake – she just liked the cake.

I was not sure the bubble house would be enough for entertaining for the evening but the owner assured me that it is a ton of fun at parties and good enough for keeping them entertained throughout the parties. Well, it was… the kids were excited and kept going to the bubble house. The parents who came by or to pick up their kids were amazed by the bubble house and some even got into it. By the time it occurred to me to get into it, it was already being taken down because the party was ending.

11th-Birthday-Party-Ideas -athomewithzan.com

The party ended up being so much fun! The children made themselves at home with the food and snacks and were very cooperative when we asked them to do an activity. What very fun time!

Our Daughter’s 13th Birthday Celebrations

Grab these ideas from our daughter’s 13th birthday celebrations to help you plan your upcoming new teen girl or boy’s birthday. This post may contain affiliate links for your convenience.

3th-Birthday-Party-Ideas-athomewithzan.com

Our sweet, eldest turned 13 this past November. It was such a milestone birthday and a new era not just for her but for all of us as a family. Celebrating and making her birthday special is always a priority to us. Yet, it always feels like we do her birthdays in parts. I’d like to think it’s because we are usually just coming out of Thanksgiving and knowing that the holidays can be a tricky time for celebrations with friends since some may be out of town. S0 we break things up quite a bit for celebrating with family and friends. We do our own family and then friends depending on availability.

Happy Birthday Kiddo

She woke up to balloons and decor in her bedroom and sweet letter under her pillow. Ah, the joys. Her sister and I stayed up a bit past bedtime to decorate the room and I also wrote a letter to her for 13, while she was asleep.

Let The Celebrations Begin

This year, we started the celebrations on Thanksgiving day since her cousins were over. We did a cake and the kids sang so loudly, you’d think it was their own excitement for their own birthday. LOL. It was quite funny. You can see the excitement on her own face here.

Birthday Breakfast

We made pancakes (like I usually do on her birthdays), with whipped cream and sprinkles. However, we had to hurry because it was a school morning and the time was cutting it close to when she had to leave.

Lunch then Dinner with Friends

On her actual birthday, we went out to eat and then dinner with friends. That as a fun little time for us. We did lunch at Texas Rhode House, then pizza at MOD’s with friends, who brought some card games for playing.

Sleepover & Pool Party

Two weeks after her actual birthday, we did her party with her friends. She wanted to swim with her friends and do a sleepover. How to combine the two took some thinking and searching. In my search for that type of invitation, I finally stumbled upon a birthday invitation that said something to the effect of “Sleepover Pool Party”. I thought that was a genius way to describe what we had in mind, so that’s exactly what we called it.

Swimming

The kids really enjoyed the swimming and did not want to leave until closing time. We found an indoor pool that was opened and willing to host us for 2 hours (we only wanted about 2 hrs).

Dinner & The Sleepover

After swimming, we got them Chic-Fil-a dinner and they came back to our house to eat and start the evening festivities. We did a few games, opened gifts, party favors and the girls went upstairs to the polish nails and do make-up.

Party Gifts and Favors

The girls brought some very cool gifts for our daughter, most were nails and skin-related. I love these little customized favor bags we gave them. She wanted to give them out on sleepover night instead of when they were leaving the next day. She figured they would want to use what were in the goodie bags – headbands, lip-gloss, nail polish, and cute packs of fancy nail designs. She made the right decision. The girls were very excited for their favors, immediately put them on, then went up to the room to do make-up and nails. The headbands are seriously the cutest and are very well-made and made for the coolest sleepover party favors. You can get these Favor Bags here on Etsy. Sleepover Breakfast

Breakfast was Cinnamon Grands, Strawberries, Blueberries, and Orange Juice. We kept things very simple to save time. I’ve seen pancakes as a sleepover breakfast meal and was always a little timid of the thought. My thoughts and questions:

  • Are these pancakes homemade? That looks like a lot of time.
  • Will I have to get up super early to make them?
  • And the thought occurred to me that “What if I bought frozen and reheat?
  • But what if most kids don’t like frozen? My kids do not, they prefer homemade.

After asking my family what other ideas we could think of, someone suggested Cinnamon Rolls. Ah, winner winner chicken dinner….Cinnamon Rolls (from the can) it was!! I didn’t think we could have went wrong with this one but we still gave the girls a choice between Cinnamon Rolls, Frozen Waffles or Pancakes. They chose the rolls…so that’s what we did.

Trip to Disney World

13th-Birthday-Party-Ideas-athomewithzan.com

For 13th birthday, we knew we wanted to do something a little different since it was a milestone birthday. I asked if she’d like to take a trip for her birthday and she immediately replied, “Disney”. I was rather surprised because I thought she would pick some other travel destination or amusement park such as Carowinds or something else.

I didn’t know she would consider Disney since we’d been several times prior, although, the last time we went it was summer of 2019 when she was 8. But that’s what we did. Most times, she would talk about SeaWorld (we’ve done that too on another birthday) but that’s because dad had a work trip close to the location around that time. But anyways, we made Disney happen.

13th-Birthday-Party-Ideas-athomewithzan.com

I think when Disney was mentioned, we intended to do the Magic Kingdom. Someone mentioned that Hollywood Studios has the most rides and since she’s all about rides, she asked to go to Hollywood Studios instead. It was ok. We still think we should have gone to the Magic Kingdom but at least we got the experience of Hollywood Studios. Now we’ve been to all four of the parks.

13th-Birthday-Party-Ideas-athomewithzan.com

It was a quick trip because we wanted to be back in time to prep and celebrate Thanksgiving at home. It actually was such a good decision to be back early since that gave ample time for what we (or I) had in mind – i.e to clean the house:0

All in all, it was a good time celebrating our daughter & making her birthday special. I snagged this “In My Official Teen Era” shirt off Etsy. I thought it would make an hilarious addition to her birthday. Well, she loved it! Grab it here.

Kids Birthdays 2023 – Including a Milestone Birthday!

Happy Birthday to our darling children!

This year, we celebrated the kids turning 9, 11, and 13. The smaller, tender years have passed and now we are entering a different phase. If you’ve been around this blog for a while, you may have seen all the activities and things I used to do with them when they were much smaller.

Kids-Birthdays-Our-Kids-Birthdays-2023-athomewithzan

I held them dear to my heart, brought me such joy. As kids grow older, they become more independent and less time seems to be spent together doing the little things. They are off to school, they become involved in extra-curricular learning activities and sports, they have friends playdates without the parents having to be there all the time, etc. So it’s different. A different I could not fully comprehend when they were like 6, 4, 2. It’s all part of growing up. And as hard and emotional it can feel sometimes, it’s also a beautiful stage. Just think, if our kids weren’t independent and not able to build skills, we would think something was wrong with their development. So let them grow mama, I just told myself that right now. All is not lost. We are blessed to have them. They are our future. Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward (Psalm 127:3).

My kids love marshmallows and I love having it on hand for planned as well as spontaneous recipes or for kids snacking. Yes, my kids love having an occasional marshmallow treat.

I’ve always wanted to try a homemade version. This year, I decided to get to it! But what’s a girl to do who has never made a marshmallow with such a recipe? Look up ideas of course. I looked up various versions of how these were made and came up with a version that taste like a cloud. Ha, kidding. But you get the idea right? We tried this recipe from King Arthur Baking and was surprised to have actually made Marshmallows.
