Who says Fall has to be about eating only turkey related dishes?! Why not take your favorite year-round recipes and incorporate them into your holiday dishes? I’ve got the perfect chicken recipe for your holidays today!

Spicy Baked fried chicken with La Morena Peppers and Maseca Corn Flour Coating

After studying in Puerto Rico for seven straight years, my love for Hispanic foods just keeps growing! It does not help that my husband cannot seem to eat enough of anything Mexican, either. Between the both of us I am not sure who loves the Hispanic foods the more. To satisfy our taste, you can find me cooking weekly Hispanic meals. In fact, it is even on our weekly menu to prepare a Hispanic dinner of some sort. But just because the holidays are upon us, that does not give me a reason to stop. I have found a way to incorporate our favorite Mexican foods with our Holiday foods – a mix of both! And YES, I know Spanish! Thanks for asking!! Well, at least enough to get by:=)

Spicy Baked Chicken with La Morena Chipotle Peppers and Maseca Corn Flour 3

To prepare my Spicy Baked “Fried” Chicken, I first made a stop by Tony’s Finer Foods to grab a can of La Morena Chipotle Peppers in Adobo along with a bag of Maseca® Corn Flour. I found both ingredients in the same isle, almost side by side; that made shopping with little kids a whole lot easier. Whenever I take the kids to Tony’s Finer Foods, I often joke with them that we are at their daddy’s store because he carries the same name.

La Morena has been providing high quality products with an authentic and traditional Mexican tastes for over 25 years to customers who appreciates quality and tradition.

La Morena Chipotle Peppers

Once I got my ingredients together I began to make this delicious chicken!

Spicy chicken ingredients

First, I combined the Maseca® Corn Flour with paprika and salt.

Spicy Baked Chicken with La Morena Chipotle Peppers and Maseca Corn Flour 8

Then, I used my blender to finely chop the La Morena Chipotle Peppers (along with some of the sauce). The spicier the better! I am a Caribbean gal – we love spicy!!

Spicy Baked Chicken with La Morena Chipotle Peppers and Maseca Corn Flour 7

I then rubbed the chopped Chipotle peppers unto the chicken and let it sit while I went about prepping the rest of the recipe. I also combined some milk with a slightly beaten egg for dipping the chicken before coating. Then I formed a little assembly line by dipping the chicken in the milk mixture and then into the Maseca® Corn Flour mixture.

Spicy Baked Chicken with La Morena Chipotle Peppers and Maseca Corn Flour 15After all pieces of the chicken were coated with the Maseca® Corn Flour, I scooped up any left over peppers from the bowl and sprinkled them unto the chicken. Then I baked “fried” the chicken at 400 degrees for 1 hr 10 minutes. While the bake time may have been a little long, the prepping itself is quick. And it was well worth the wait for the chicken to be done.

Spicy Baked Chicken with La Morena Chipotle Peppers and Maseca Corn Flour 16

Look how nice and brown and crisp it looks. I am really pleased with how well the Maseca coating adhered to the chicken and gave it this nice color. And because this is meant to be a holiday recipe, I also made a little dipping sauce with cranberry to go with along with it. No need to have turkey to eat your cranberries!

Spicy Baked Chicken with La Morena Chipotle Peppers and Maseca Corn Flour 6

To make the sauce, I combined Mexican salsa, whole cranberries, and of course 1 teaspoon of La Morena Chipotle in Adobo Pepper sauce. The peppers gave it a gentle little kick.

Spicy Baked Chicken with La Morena Chipotle Peppers and Maseca Corn Flour 4

This spicy baked “fried” chicken with La Morena Chipotle Peppers and Maseca® Corn Flour is sure to be a great addition to your holiday meal planning.  Here is the full recipe so you, too, can make this chicken.

  • 1 teaspoon La Morena Chipotle Pepper sauce
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Line a baking sheet with foil then spray with cooking spray. Set aside.
  3. Wash chicken and place in a large bowl. Place the La Morena Chipotle peppers with 1 teaspoon of the sauce in a blender.
  4. Chop into fine pieces. Note: You may need to add a little water in the blender to get it going.
  5. Rub chopped peppers unto the chicken. Set aside.
  6. Mix Maseca corn flour, paprika, and salt in a separate bowl.
  7. In another bowl, combine the beaten egg with milk.
  8. Form an assembly with the chicken, milk mixture, and the Maseca corn flour mixture.
  9. Dip chicken into the milk mixture, then into the Maseca corn flour mixture.
  10. Place chicken unto the baking sheet and bake for 1 to 1 hour 15 minutes or until done.
  11. Remove chicken from the oven. Set aside.
  12. To make the dip, combine cranberry sauce with salsa and 1 teaspoon La Morena Chipotle Pepper sauce in a small saucepan. Cook about 10 minutes stirring occasionally.
  13. Serve with chicken. Yum!!

Serve it with a my quick mildly spicy cranberry and salsa dip and your family will be sure to love it during the holidays. Mine did! At one point I even saw our 10 month old baby chewing away on a drumstick in his hand that he got from one of his sisters. I guess he likes spicy, too! It did not seem to affect the kid one bit!

Characteristics of a Biblical Homemaker from Proverbs 14 – Building Wisely

Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands (Proverbs 14:1, KJV).

Have you, as a homemaker, ever wondered if you are building up your home according to Scriptural commands? This type of ‘building up; is not just referring to the actual act of constructing a beautiful house from wood or brick. Rather, it is the internal welfare, management, and growth of the family in the home. There are so many verses in the bible that tell us what this should actual look like. We’ve already seen some heavy examples here and here via my previous posts in this series. But really, homemaking is not such an easy tasks as some seem to make it.

A wise Woman

When it comes to ‘building up’ our homes, we should consider it a very seriously just as a husband may consider his job outside the home seriously. As he works diligent to provide for the household so should we work diligently to provide for the ‘building up’ of our home. The bible says, that a ‘wise’ woman builds her home: but the foolish will pluck it down. Let’s look at the first part of the verse and how a wise woman will build her home.

Remember Proverbs 31:10-31 and all the qualities we saw there of a virtuous woman? Well, these are the qualities that can be applied here in Proverbs 14. It is a perfect picture of how a wise woman builds her home. She does so by:

  • loving and submitting to her husband
  • properly caring for her children
  • managing finances well
  • not being lackadaisical
  • not being idle
  • increasing the wealth of home
  • being diligent
  • being industrious
  • not being wasteful
  • willingly to be resourceful

On the other hand, the latter part of the verse speaks of foolish woman who is quite the opposite of the woman who wisely builds. Have you ever seen TV shows where the foolish women come in and try to destroy families. That is exactly what comes to my mind when I think about ‘foolish’ women who plucks down. Except in this verse, it is probably more referring to the woman of the home. A foolish homemaker will pluck down her home by:

  • nagging her husband
  • wastefully spending
  • sitting around lackadaisically and doing nothing valuable
  • desiring more and more with discontentment
  • not seeking to be industrious around the home

And we could add tons more to the list! But as wives and homemakers we should desire the former part of the verse – to be women who ‘build wisely’. While we know that we may make mistakes every now and again, that should not stop us from desiring to do what is right.

How are you doing with your home? Are you wisely building or are you mindlessly tearing down? I encourage you today to take a few minutes to re-evaluate and ask God to help you make the necessary changes. I know I need to do the same in many areas ’cause I ain’t got it all together! I would love to know where you are in the comments below!

Two Steps to Help Set An Active Little Moving Baby Free

When we had our first little baby girl, people always commented on how fast kids grow. I could not imagine how possible that could be – after all she probably was just about two weeks old at the time. Let me tell you, it is no joke! They really grow fast. Now she is already almost five years old with two other little ones to call her siblings! You’ve seen our new addition to the family at the very end of last year. I cannot believe he is already ten months old. And boy is he active!

little mover 14

A few weeks ago, my husband commented how much he is beginning to look more like a “little boy”. Well, he is a little boy but he is not so much looking like a little “baby boy” anymore. And he is proving it to us by how active he is! That kid is definitely a Little Mover! He is keeping up with his sisters and love to play and follow them around the home. He is not yet walking, but he crawls, pulls himself up to standing position with support, and cruises around by taking steps while he is holding unto a table or chair.

little movers 3

While it gives me a free hand to get chores done, it also gives me more work. Because this kid gets into everything in and out of his path. Yep, he is finding the forbidden paths, too. Such as the wall around the fireplace, the girls climber stools in the bathroom, the nightlights plugged into the circuits, floor standing lamps, and everything else he is not supposed to get into. But it’s all good because it shows he is developing at the rate he is supposed to!

little movers 15Because he is such an active little mover, I have been taking step by step measures to try to keep him safe.

1. One of the things I recently did to protect his little legs as he crawls and cruises around is to add a shaggy rug to our hardwood floors in the living room. I am so much pleased with this new rug addition as I feel confident that he can safely crawl without dropping on the hardwood floors. Plus the hardwood floors tend to get cold during the Fall and winter. No fun for a crawling baby!

little movers 7

little movers 6

2. Another thing I do while he is moving around is to always make sure is wearing a good diaper. No, not a cheap leaky diaper I have to change every five minutes. But a diaper that will keep baby dry for a while with no leaks.  Ask my husband, he knows I have always been a fan of great diapers and will go the extra mile to get the good ones. So when recently I was introduced to try the New Huggies Little Movers Diapers I was thrilled to try them out on my little one.

little movers 2

little movers 4

They come in cute kid design such as this Mickey Mouse ones. And so far, I have yet to have a leak. These diapers do provide an outstanding grip, fit, and wetness protection. As your baby begin to move about (crawl, walk, kick, etc), there would be no problems. Some of the other features of the New Huggies Little Movers Diapers are as follows:

• A DryTouch Liner that absorbs on contact
• Double Grip Strips for comfortable movement and a comfy fit that lasts
• Contoured Shape for freedom of movement

little movers 1

I have tried them on both during the day while our baby is playing and at night when he goes to sleep. They will last throughout the night and I have not have any type of leaks with them. Also, they don’t seem to get filled up quickly. I bought them from Walmart and I am really glad I did!

If you have little mover in your home, you may be inspired to give these Huggies diapers a try. You can even upload a photo or video of your moving baby on one of Huggies Social pages (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook), for a chance to be featured. Don’t forget to use the hastag #SetBabyFree

Do you have a little mover or movers in your home? What steps have you taken to help them as they move about? Have you tried the New Huggies Little Movers Diapers yet? I would love to know your thoughts in the comments.

DIY Burlap Placemats

These burlap placemats would make a great little addition to any Fall table decor. They are simple, easy to make, and very low cost. DIY Burlap Placemats for Fall Update: I’ve recreated the mats as of Fall 2017 and updated this post with clearer steps and new and brighter images since I now have a better camera, more lighting and since you tend to like the mats so much. I also realize that some of the original photos (before the update) have disappeared from here. So sorry for the inconvenience if you came by earlier. Hopefully, these new images and clearer instructions will be of help to you. These new mats were created the same way as the original (photo above).

DIY No-Sew Burlap Placemats

I originally made these burlap placemats a couple years ago while the little ones were playing nicely, meaning I was basically hurrying before someone needed something. I bought a roll of burlap from a Super Walmart (Wedding section) for a different making some utensil bag holders. But when I unrolled it and saw the length was 10 ft, I knew the possibilities with this would be endless – think table runner, placemats, gift wrapping, vase decor, bags, wreath, pillow, flower, etc. I ended up using the majority of it to make some perfect little placemats for a Fall Table Setting.DIY Burlap Placemats - Fall & Autumn Table Decor - At Home With Zan Before I made these, we had only two placemats, Rapunzel and Minnie Mouse for the girls! I have not put them out on the table for a while because although the girls love them, let’s face it, a six- sitter dinning table looks kind of cheesy with just two placemats. While I was cleaning out the garage tonight and getting a bin ready for the salvation army, I thought of giving them away but they were still cute and the girls will be disappointed. After all, I bought those for them! Anyway, I have been eyeing a few different placements in a few different stores (cheap enough) but couldn’t bring myself to buy them yet. I wanted to make sure I would like them or the color would be neutral enough for various uses. I saw some burlap ones at Target for $3 a piece (Dollar isle) but decided to wait and I am glad I did. Because I only paid around $5.97 for this entire roll which allowed me to get more mats for what I paid. Pretty frugal, I’d say! Let’s get to making these cuties!!! Materials Used:

  • a 10 ft roll of burlap (the thicker kind)
  • hot glue
  • a tape measure or ruler
  • a pair of scissors
  • and a pencil or sharpie
  • Plate

DIY Burlap Placemats - At Home With Zan - Directions: Lots of photos to show the steps but it’s really easy.

  • Unroll the burlap partially and measure the size of one mat. I’m not sure what is the standard size of a placemat but I measured up to 20 inches. I wanted 18 inches for the actual mat plus an extra inch on the right and left sides for gluing (directions further down).

DIY Burlap Placemats - Measurements - At Home With Zan Make sure your plate size could fit on the mat with extra room for utensils. This mat is big enough for a plate, cup and utensils on the sides. -DIY Burlap Placemats - Measurements - At Home With Zan-

  • Place a dot or a small slit at the 20 inch mark (do not cut it out fully yet). You can cut it out fully and use it to cut out individual mats but I find it easier to use the fold over method (see below).

-DIY Burlap Placemats - Measurements - Cutting - At Home With Zan-

  • Take the end of the rolled up burlap and fold it over the the measured mat, unrolling as you go. If you look closely at this next image you’ll see how I folded over the first mat while unrolling the burlap. Simply fold back and forth to create more mats.

DIY Burlap Placemats - Cutting Burlap - At Home With Zan DIY Burlap Placemats - For Autumn - At Home With Zan

  • Cut through the folded ends. You’ll end up with 6 mats if you use the same length and measurements as I did.  Trim the loose ends a little.

Burlap Placemats - DIY - Cutting - At Home With Zan - DIY Burlap Placemats - Autumn - At Home With Zan DIY Burlap Placemats - For Fall & Autumn - At Home With Zan This is how it looks when I placed a plate on it. It’s already a mat even with the unfinished sides. DIY Burlap Placemats - Plate Measurements - At Home With Zan -

  • Remember at the beginning I mentioned leaving an extra inch on either side of the mat for gluing. Turn the mats over to the back then fold over an inch on the right and left sides (see next photo). Hot glue the ends to keep them in place and to create a finished look at the front. (The top and bottom of the mats will remain the same since we did not cut around the edges).
  • NOTE: You could get a little more creative with the ends – don’t hot glue but unravel the ends for a shabby look, or hot glue lace or ribbon around it. Anything goes.

DIY Burlap Placemats - At Home With Zan -

  • Use a Popsicle stick or a spoon or something to smooth out the sides to save your fingers from burning! Ask me how I know that:)

DIY Burlap Placemats - No Sew - At Home With Zan

  • Once you’re done gluing the sides to the back, turn the mats over to the front. Each should now measure out to 18 inches.

DIY Burlap Placemats - Measuring Mats - At Home With Zan

  • Here are all 6 that I did. You can see how one is still rolled up and the other 5 looking all finished. No loose ends.

-DIY Burlap Placemats for Fall - At Home With Zan -

  • If you want to smooth out your mats a bit, use a warm iron to do so. Be sure to test one little end so that the heat from the iron would be just right. I didn’t check what setting I used but it was on the lowest possible. Also, I didn’t feel like getting out the ironing board so I placed the mat over a folded table cloth on the table where I was already working.

DIY Burlap Placemats - For Autumn and Fall - At Home With Zan DIY Burlap Placemats - Iron to Smooth - At Home With Zan DIY Burlap Placemats - Ironing Placemats - At Home With Zan- And there you have it – DIY burlap placemats. I was pretty surprised how easy these were to put together. The first time, they took less than an hour with a few interruptions. This time, they took a bit longer because I was just taking my time, while making sure that the step-by-step photos were clear enough. If you’re not photographing, I’m guessing these could be done in like a half hour or less. Note: Dry clean or spot clean only. If you wash them, they’ll get all shriveled up and shrink some. Then you’ll have to try and iron and stretch them out again. DIY Burlap Placemats - Autumn - At Home With Zan-

Here is another look at the original version.

Fall Entryway with DIY Chalkboard Sign

During Target’s summer sale a few months ago, I picked up this frame that I thought would be perfect for an entryway given that it had the little hooks to organize keys and other items. I showed you it here during our home tour a couple weeks ago.

fall entryway chalkboard 2

Here is a before photo of it in this next image.  As you can see, there is a place for inserting photos, too, which I still had empty due to the fact that I could not decide what I wanted on there. Both hubby and I agreed that the color was a bit off than what we would prefer but I could not pass up a $10 sale at Target for this. I knew it could look better with paint! So as I am in the process (and it is a process) of redecorating our home, I figured I would give this little entryway organizer a chalkboard makeover and paint the wood brown. I already had both paint colors on hand.

Home Tour 1

A few coats of chalkboard paint (I’d say about 4 coats to get it to look right), some brown acrylic multi-surface paint, and I am loving the after look.

Entryway sign painted

I am loving the deeper colors and the idea of being able to change up the writing however I desire. And because it is Fall, I decided to write some inspiring Fall words on there.

fall entry chalkboard

Also, notice the white labels in the before photo are gone. I painted the spaces with chalkboard paint, too. It is easier to write and erase (repeat) than to have to find paper to replace if the items are rearranged on the hooks.

fall entryway 4

Here is a look at our small but very functional entryway. Remember, there is very poor lighting in this house.

fall entryway 10

The chalkboard sign also works as a place to hang small lightweight jackets/sweaters, keys, bags, hats, and other small hanging items.

This is an end table I had from a few years ago. It fits well in the space. I placed a couple items I had on hand on top of it.  The only new item is the lamp for added lighting in the space. See that large oversize couch on the corner? It works as a sitting area for putting on shoes close to the entry, too.

fall entryway lamp

I found this lamp while browsing through the Isles at Target, a few weeks ago. They seem to be having a major Fall sale. Both pieces were sold separately at $4.95 each! There were many different lamps and shades so I decided to pick whichever combo I liked best. Hubby complemented me on how much he like the lamps (I bought two). The lamp sits on a stack of books to give it some height.

fall etnryway lamp 4

I added one of the candles my husband gave to me for Valentines, a few years ago – wooded wick plus Tropical flavors. The colors compliment the season well.

fall entryway 8

A  catch-all try. We all need one of those in the entryway right? Technically, it is for incoming mail but receipts and keys end up in there, too.

fall entry tray

I also added some faux flowers from IKEA USA and an old painted water can from Target. Both items were already on hand.

fall entry flowers 2

My kids painted these little pumpkins they got from our church’s Fall Fest a few weeks ago.

fall entry 13

I love that this little end table has double shelves to add a few collect-all baskets at the bottom. The top shelf holds a basket of mail for sorting and at the very bottom, a basket with kids shoes. This shoe system has being working well for the kids for a while now. It is so much easier for them rather than having to reach into the closet for their shoes. But I am about to organize our shoe closet with those heavier boots and cold weather shoes so we’ll see how that goes.

fall entry shoe basket

And then a wire basket ($3 bucks at Target) that holds the kids umbrellas. By the way, I just can’t seem to have enough wire baskets!

fall entry umbrellas

Like I said, there is not much to the entryway, but it is very functional and has been working well with this little set up.

What about you? Do you have a large or small entryway? Do you make it functional or is it only for style or looks? I would love to know your thoughts in the comments!

Our Fall Mantle & Fireplace Decor

Fall is just such a wonderful time of year with all the beauty that surrounds us from the outside! The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof (Psalm 24:1). Many of us like to bring some of that beauty inside our homes so we can savor it while the season lasts. Remember my post on ways to welcome Fall into your homes here? But because there are so many vibrant colors during this season it could be difficult to chose a favorite for decorating. This year, I have boiled it down to neutral with a pop of color. And I am totally loving it!

Fall Mantle with Logo

While I love seasonal decorating, I decided not to go big this year. Here is why. Since we moved into our home last year, I have not fully decorated our home. When we moved, we got rid of some things that just did not match our space anymore. And since our now home is a tad bigger, then there is the need for extra decor. We moved in at the beginning of Fall last year so there was the Fall decorating. Then there was the Christmas decorating. There here comes Spring, so what now. So for this Fall, I figured I’d wise-up and continue adding to our base decor rather than going all-out to decorate for Fall. With that in mind, I did the mantle and fireplace, the porch, and just a couple other touches of Fall throughout the home – nothing major.

Our mantle/fireplace is one of the things I love about our home. Our kids are always excited when we light up the fireplace during the colder months. It usually takes me a little while to figure out how I want to decorate it each time, but once I am done I am usually pretty happy with the results. So here are some photos; hope you enjoy them.

Fall mantle side view

I started off with a $5 wreath as my central item that I purchased at Jo-Ann’s Fabric stores. Originally, I thought I would use a mirror but I already had a few mirrors on either side of the walls cradling the mantle, so when I saw the wreath I was happy to use it. The color is a bit dark against the mantle but it is not too bad. Plus the white and orange balance it off, I think. The WELCOME sign, I purchased last year at Walmart on clearance (I believe).

fall mantle 7

The little chalkboard in the middle is from Target for a $1, of course! I had it from earlier this summer so I figured a little Fall sign in the middle of the wreath would be great. It’s just hanging unto a stick in the back of the wreath.

fall mantle 5

I already had these candle sticks on hand, they were once black but I repainted them white earlier this summer. You may have seen them in my Fall decor last year. I also had these cream color candles on hand, too. I started off using orange candles but found that the cream ones worked better for this. As for the pumpkins, I bought them orange from the Dollar Tree and repainted them white, then hot glued rope around the stems. Easy. I should do a post on them!

Fall mantle 1

And here is my faux $3.00 bouquet of flowers from Walmart. While I could have used real branches and leaves from the outside, I did not want to go through the hassle of changing them up every time they dried up. So fake was good enough for me.

fall mantle 3

fall mantle 4

fall mantle 13

What do you think so far? Hang tight, I still have a few more photos of the fireplace!

fall mantle bottom

I love love love this really soft blanket that I found earlier this summer from Ross Dress Store for $12. I mean, they truly have the softest. I must have about 5 very soft cozy blankets from their store. I also love that it has the tussles around the edges. That tussle one was a one time find, though. The other blankest I  got from there don’t have any, but they are all just as soft. I am a bit bummed out that I did not grab the other tussle ones when I saw them. Oh well, can’t be too greedy here.

fall mantle 10

These birch logs – oh men do I love them! I was eyeing them since last year on Amazon and on Ebay. But I truly could not bring myself to pay $30. We live out in the suburbs so there is no birch near me. At least, I have not seen any. And even if there was I am not sure how I would get them. But this year, I had some Amazon remaining credit from gift cards my husband earns through his job. I had about $15 left in gift card so after reading the reviews of how beautiful these birch logs (affiliate link) were, I figured paying the extra $15 out of pocket was not too bad. They came in a pack of six with random lengths between 17 to 20 inches. They are nice, long enough, and are truly beautiful. Our little kids were all “wow-ing” over them. I only use them for decorating!

fall mantle 11

Aren’t they beautiful? They really accentuate the fireplace and give it that finished look!

fall mantle 12

And here is a look at that pumpkin again!

fall mantle 9

So let’s see all that we used here – wreath, chalkboard, welcome sign, faux flowers, candles and candle stands, pumpkins, blankets, and birch logs.

fall mantle collage 3And here is a look at it in full. Not sure what’s going on with my camera but oh well. And now we’ve got to baby-proof the edges as that baby finds it very fascinating!

Kids Corner

Organizing a Kids Craft Supply Space for Fall

Every parent with smaller kids should have a craft space right? Especially for the days when we are bound inside due to rain, snow, or heat warning. And as the Fall season has arrived with the winter to follow, it is definitely a good idea to gather craft supplies and store them all in one place for when they are stuck inside. Last week, I discussed Six Ways to Get Your Home Ready for Fall. Today, I want to talk about creating a kids craft supply space for Fall.

Organized Kids Craft Supplies Space

Our kids love to do crafts and I love seeing what they create and displaying them around the home. I believe the kids learn so much from doing and getting involved in kinetic activities. With these reasons in mind, I tend to keep a stash of craft supplies on hand. Just in case you missed my recent kids crafts and activities supply list to have on hand, you can view it here and print it for free if you choose to do so. It even includes a grocery item section:)

A few weeks ago, I showed you a peek into our home and some of you commented that it seemed organized. I guess I never really considered myself so much of an organized person before that post. But then when I stopped to think about all the pieces I have organized in our home, I can see how that can be true.

I do not have a craft room so I use a space in our laundry room to store the craft supplies. We also keep preschool workbooks and activity boards there, too. In the past, I have moved the supplies to a space in the garage. And our 4 year old daughter proclaimed how clean and neat the laundry room looked then. I agreed. Without the craft supplies in the laundry room, the room is much more spacier but keeping the supplies in the garage was not my preferred way. So I have returned the stuff to the laundry room and restocked it with a whole bunch of supplies! Take a look!

This is the space in the laundry room to the left of the machines. The top shelves were already there when we moved in. Also, the lighting is terrible so even with the opened doors, I still could not capture bright enough images. Our intent is to eventually remodel the room. But for now it works as a laundry room, craft supplies room, and mudroom leading to the backyard. So I thought I would give you a look at how I organize our craft room space.

craft room 6

While I had many of the little bins and jars (previously from Target and Walmart) on hand to store the crafts, I ended up purchasing a few extras from the Dollar Tree for extra storage.

kids craft room 4

And here is a sample of the items that went into the bins. I purchased them back in August during the Back to School sales at Walmart and Dollar Tree. All of the items in this first photo are from the Dollar Tree and the others in the photo following, from Walmart.

While the Dollar Tree has good little coloring books and supplies for crafting, it is probably not a good idea to purchase dry-erase markers there. Just saying. . . .They tend to ‘dry’ out really fast. No pun intended.

But anyway, I am not usually good at thrifting, but I found this new, no damage, unopened organizing shelf for half the price at a goodwill store. They had about 10 boxes up front as you walk into the store. It is a Circo brand from Target so I just could not pass it up. I knew it would come in handy. I had no idea Target donated supplies to Goodwill stores.

kids craft room 19It did not take very  long to assemble and it is not very tall. The bins are removable, too.

kids craft room 17This storage shelf sits at the bottom of the already mounted shelves in the laundry room. The space was just perfect for the portable shelf both length and width wise. And I am glad it came in white, too, to match the rest of the shelving and the washing machines.

I use it to hold larger items such as construction paper, paper towel rolls, egg cartons, yarn and so forth. And way back in the corner, I keep very larger paper items: poster boards, charts, cardboards, etc.

kids craft room 7On top the shelf is a basket that holds all kinds of activity and coloring books, paper puzzles, stickers, wipe clean number and letter practice sheets and various other paperwork.

kids craft room 8

Here is a sneak peak into one of the workbooks I use for the kids. You can find the post on the workbook resources we use here.

workbook big

I also keep additional bins and sectional plates for play dough and sensory play.

kids craft room 18

For the sensory play, we mostly use homemade colored rice, pasta, cornmeal, and oats. And we colored the pasta and the rice in lovely Fall colors, too! Sensory play like this is more suitable for our 2 year old but our 4 year old preschooler loves playing with them, too. Colored rice makes good little pretend cooks!

kids craft room 24

Just to the left of the shelf, you will find some tin cans holding long thin items such as straws, fuzzy sticks, and paint brushes. I had purchased these cans from Target (Dollar Isle, of course) for another use earlier this summer.

kids craft room 16

kids craft room 15

The first mounted shelf above the portable storage holds baskets and containers with items such as acrylic paint, glue, glitter, and small items for play dough.

kids craft room 11

kids craft room 9A closer look at the play dough kit. I usually make homemade play dough and the kids can decorate them with little things like these. They also have cookie cutters and play dough sets in another bin that include rolling pins and trays for playing.

kids craft room 22

The middle mounted shelf keeps all items in bottled jars. The items include dried colored pasta, cornmeal for sensory play, buttons, craft eyes, Popsicle sticks, clothespins feathers, sequins, sparkly gems, and various other smaller items.

kids craft room 13

kids craft room 12

The top shelf holds the extra items such as extra crayons, glue, paint, paper plates and whatever we have extra for when we run out of something. Glue tends to go fast!

kids craft room 14

And here is a look at the entire thing. Once again, excuse the poor photo images. I try to keep the space looking neat as much as possible because our laundry room is not big. And having stuff all over the place will totally drive me crazy!

kids craft room 20

So that is the little space where we keep craft and activity supplies handy. And if you are wondering if we will craft daily, the answer is Nope! We used to pretty regularly, last year, but with three little ones on hand, it is not always easy to schedule daily crafts. But at least we have the supplies and we will try to do as much as we can.

What do you think of this small space? Do you prepare craft supplies to keep your little ones busy during the colder months? Do you have a separate room for them? I would love to know your thoughts in the comments below!

Kids Crafts & Activities Supplies List with A Free Printable

Now that Fall is officially here and the weather is getting cooler, younger children who do not attend school will probably spend more time inside rather than outside. With this in mind, we like to prepare a list of supplies for crafts and activities that they can do indoors. These activities are not the everyday obvious activities like playing with toys, jumping, or playing with a ball. Rather, it is the guided activities that require more concentration such as playing with play dough, making baking soda and vinegar eruption, or making a beaded necklace. Young children’s attention span is very short and they tend to get bored quickly. Having a list of supplies on hand for such activities is a great way to cut some of that indoor boredom.  I created an alphabetized list that you can down load for free.

Kids Craft list of supplies to have on hand

This supply list is also great to have year-round. Because while we love to be outside during the warmer months, there are times when we are forced to stay inside, for whatever reason. Overall, it is just a good idea to help our kids learn and develop mentally and physically by doing various activities with them.

We have also alphabetized it and included a grocery supply section for making activities such as pasta necklaces, goop, play-dough and other fun activities for kids. Here is a look at our popular fall scented play-dough we did last year using ingredients like flour, salt, oil, and flavored gelatin.

While the list may seem a bit long, remember that most kids activities does not have to be complicated. If you are going to craft, basically all you need to throw a craft together with kids is construction paper, scissors, and glue. The possibilities are endless with these three items. But we like to go further and make all kinds of stuff.

If you have young children and need some ideas of what to buy or collect for crafting and special indoor activities with small children, feel free to download your free copy of our Kids Crafts and Activities Sample Supply List. Then do a Google search based on the supplies and you will find tons of ways to use them. Here is a former post I have written on 30 plus super easy budget-friendly activities for toddlers using many of the supplies on the list. Hope you have fun crafting with your kiddos during the colder months!

6 Ways to Welcome Fall Into Your Homes

While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. Genesis 8:22, KJV

6 ways to welcome fall into your homesFall is a beautiful time of the year, isn’t it? Not only do we seem to appreciate the lovely colors of the changing season and the beautiful smells around us, but there seems to be a need for change. We tend to slow down because the busyness of the summer has past. The weather has changed and the need to stay indoors and enjoy the comforts of home is demanding. It is also a time to change our home and living spaces to suit the weather conditions.

Here are 6 Ways (with choices) to Bring Some Fall Cozy Into Your Homes, in no particular order.

Note: While the title says “6 ways”, notice that most of them come with a variety of ideas and options.

1. Add Fall Colors: Fall itself comes with so many beautiful colors. Why not bring some color indoors? It does not have to be expensive.

  • Gather leaves and bushes from outside and create beautiful centerpieces.

2. Use real pumpkins from your garden or purchase a few inexpensive ones from a grocery. You can even use fake ones from the Dollar store, too. If you prefer earth tones, then go for it – it is just as beautiful!

2. Add Warmth: Warmth comes in many forms. But here are some ways to add some warmth to your Autumn home.

  • Use cozy blankets and throws. Gather up those soft cozy blankets and throws you stored away during the summer and place them on couches or store them in baskets in the living and family rooms. Make them ready and available for your family on those cozy Fall days and nights when all you want to do is snuggle up on the couch with a cup of hot coffee, a good book, or a movie.

  • Add Cozier Bedding, Linens, and Window Curtains: Use curtains to warm up the space. Heavier window curtains and panels are more suitable for the colder season. But lighter curtains will definitely let more light into the home which is something I love.

  • Choose bedding that will keep you warm. Personally, I like using quilts and flannels for this time of the year. Down and Down-alternative bedding are great for this time, too. They will keep you nice and snugly!
  • Fireplace: If you own a fireplace try lighting it up every once in a while. It will warm up your home in many ways. Not only will your home be warm from the heat but it will bring a sense of that cozy warmness as it glows in the home. Make sure it is working and safe to light up for your family to enjoy when the weather drops.

  • Bring on the cozy warming drinks! Hot chocolate, cider, mocha, hot tea or any of your favorite Fall drinks.

3. Add an Inviting and Welcoming Feel:

  • Throw pillows: There is something great about throw pillows. They definitely will make or break how your space looks. Adding some seasonal throw pillows to go along with those cozy blankets will make your home feel welcoming, warm, and inviting.

  • Candles: Nothing like a soft glowing candle to depict the mood of a home! They will add a sense of welcome and warmth to the home. Using Fall scented candles (cinnamon, caramel, pumpkin pie spice, etc) not only will add a feel of warmth and welcome to your home but it will make your home smell wonderful, too!

 4. Add Texture:

  • Layered accent rugs & door mats will add more texture to your home. They will immediately change the look and feel of your home. If you have hardwood floors, adding some accent rugs will keep your feet warm, too. But accent rugs can be pricey. If you cannot afford to invest in one at the moment, then maybe a simple door mat change up for the season will do. You definitely want your door mats to hold up to weather changes.
  • Woven baskets to hold blankets (as mentioned earlier) are great for adding texture.

5. Add a Simple Fall Tablescape:

Fall-Table-side-picture

Image via Graceful Order

Add touches of Fall to your dinning table for a simple change. You could use your regular dishes and add specks of Fall tones or a few colored napkins.

6. Add Natural Scents:

  • Do a Potpourri Fall Boil using your Favorite Autumn scents. A mixture of cinnamon, oranges, nutmeg, and cranberries will make your home smell amazing!
  • Bake Something Special: One could never over all the tasty Autumn recipes that the universe has to offer! The possibilities are endless. Baking something special with pumpkins, apples or caramels, will create a beautiful aroma throughout the home.

Remember, it does not have to be pricey or complicated to be beautiful. Use what you have on hand first before purchasing. And if you must purchase, then try to invest in quality stuff (that you actually love) that you can use over and over again (Note to self here, too)!

Characteristics of a Biblical Homemaker from Proverbs 31

The Virtuous Woman – Proverbs 31:10-31  (Taken from the King James Version (KJV)

Virtuous woman verse 2

As we continue our Biblical Homemaking series, I would like to continue on the characteristics of a Biblical Homemaker. We have already seen from Titus that she is Sound and Stable, and one who loves her family and does good at home. You can find the post here. Today, I want to touch a little on the Proverbs 31 woman by updating an older post.

There is so much to learn from this type of woman. One could easily become intimated by just reading the verses that seem like an exhausted list. I remember reading these verses long before I was married and longed to be like this example of a woman. But then I wondered how in the world someone could achieve all this. I mean, I cannot even sew or do all the fancy stuff this lady does. But you know what, I am thankful that I do not have to be able to sew to be a good homemaker. Not everyone has this talent. Not everyone has the same talents. The world would be a boring place if we all did. The key is to use what we were blessed with to the best of our abilities to bring glory to God, who gave them to us in the first place.

The world would be a boring place if we all had the same talents. The key is to use what we were blessed with to the best of our abilities to bring glory to God, who gave them to us in the first place.

I am by no means a Bible scholar. But I will do my best to give a brief overview of the verses. Many of us as wives and homemakers desire to be better at what we do. Someone once said that is why we women look to various sources for help. We look at magazines, HGTV shows, read a million blog posts about family and home, and various other resources to help us become better. But what better examples to follow than those from the Bible? It is all laid out for us in plain old writing. I guarantee you, the bible would never lead you astray. It may have been written a long time ago and may be old fashioned but the principles still apply. So let’s get right to it!

  •  10 Who can find a virtuous woman? The first impression that we get from this woman is that she is Virtuous. First impressions matters, don’t they? The English Standard Version translates the word “virtuous” as “excellent”. She is a wife of noble character and a women who excels in everything she does as we will see in the following verses.

The second part of the verse talks about her prize being more than rubies. . . . for her price is far above rubies.  When I think about rubies, I think about expensive gem stones. In fact, it is said that rubies are one of the most expensive gems today and may even be more valuable than colorless diamonds! Moreover, the ruby was considered the most precious of the 12 gem stones created by God. So for a virtuous woman to be worth way more than a ruby is quite a “price”. Don’t you agree? Wow! This is just amazing!

  • 11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. This woman does not waste! Her husband can safely trust in her to manage business for him and to take good care of the home.
  • 12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She makes it a “point” or is committed to do good to her husband, always.
  • 13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is not lazy but finds ways to be productive.
  • 14 She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She goes at lengths to find the best products for her household.
  • 15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She starts the day early to prepare for her household and to those who help her.
  • 16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She is industrious and considers the cost and all that are involved before purchasing.
  • 17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. 18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. 19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She is diligent in getting things done and is happy with the end results.
  • 20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She has a giving heart and gives to those in need.
  • 21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. 22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. She chooses good quality clothing for her family and lays up in stock for later days – she provides a comfortable home. Scarlet, silk, and purple are her favorite materials. When I think about those materials, I think about quality and royalty (especially purple). In ancient times, purple was worn by Emperors, magistrates, and the like…..
  • 23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. Her husband is respected by others in his community because of her testimony.
  • 24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. She sells her products to others. She is industrious.
  • 25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. Strength and honor are rewarded to her for her quality.
  • 26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. 27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. 28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Her words are filled with kindness and wisdom. She selects them carefully before she speaks and blesses others with her words. Also, she is not idle and takes excellent care of her family and home. She assumes the title as “Blessed” from both her husband and children.
  • 29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. The qualities she exhibits surpasses all other qualities of virtuous women.
  • 30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. She is not rewarded for her outward beauty but her inward, which she can only accomplish by fearing the Lord. Outward beauty is nothing when it comes to inward qualities. Her own works shall speak for her.

Beauty recommends none to God, nor is it any proof of wisdom and goodness, but it has deceived many a man who made his choice of a wife by it. But the fear of God reigning in the heart, is the beauty of the soul; it lasts for ever. (Matthew Henry)

The characteristics explained in these verses are phenomenal! This is an example of a woman who seems to have it all together in EVERY. SINGLE. WAY. She takes care of home and her family so well that they call her “blessed”. What an example for us to follow as we create our homes. Yes, we may find ourselves failing over and over again, but we should not stop striving to achieve good characteristics as we take care of our family and our homes.

Let’s challenge ourselves to work on one good character at a time by taking one verse and building our lives around it. Trying to achieve every character all at once will simply exhaust us and set us up for failure. Take a verse , study it, pray about it, and allow the Holy Spirit to change us and make to be better women of God. And the talents you already have to put into your home keeping using them to the best that you know how. If you are interested in reading an overview of this passage here is a good source

So what do you think about all the characteristics of the virtuous woman? Do you struggle with some of the characteristics mentioned in the verses? Where do you find yourself excelling or what talent do you have that you could continue to use for the betterment of your home? I would love to know your thoughts in the comments!

Shared Space – Girls Bedroom Tour

For the past few days, I have been taking you into our home to see where we are since we moved in. You have seen the Main Living areas, the Master bedroom, our sons’s nursery, and today, the girls’ bedroom. Our preschooler and toddler share a room and let me tell you, while it is nice to have them share and build sisterly relationship, sometimes the room is not the easiest to set up. It is always a challenge trying to figure out the best angle for the beds, furniture, and play items. Makes me wonder what in the world the builders were thinking when they built the house or more so, the architect who came up with the plan! And trust me, I have moved stuff around a million times to get the look I want but oh well, we are making it work with the way it is now.

The room has not been painted. I have removed all the wall paper but you can still see some of the marks since it has not been sanded or painted. And all that stars on the ceiling need to be gone, too! In any event, here is a look at the room. You will see Princess items making their appearance regularly. Girls are fascinated with all things Disney Princesses.

Home Tour – Master Bedroom

A few days ago, I gave you a tour into our home covering the main areas (kitchen, living room, family room). Just in case you missed it, you can find it by clicking this link, Home Tour – Living Room, Family Room, & Kitchen. Today, we are touring the unfinished Master Bedroom. I have been trying out this blue combo to see how I like it. I am used to decorating with darker colors such as burgundy or brown. But this summer, when the room really needed some sprucing up, I tried to brighten it up a bit with lighter colors. The paint color is as is since we moved in. Although the bedding and decorations are a lighter color, I am not sure what to make of it yet.

master bedroom window

Once again, our home has very poor lighting so the photos are very dark.

I found the bedding at a Ross store along with some of the decorative pieces like this clock and the wall mirrors further down.

The lamps were purchased from Walmart.

Remember those painted Mason Jars I did a few months ago? I am using them as flower jars in the room.

These mirror frames which I found at Ross were blue only. The specks of white came about when I decided that blue probably was not the best color for the walls since the paint is a bluish-grey. I had already removed and threw away the box and tags so I decided to keep them.

When I attempted to paint the mirror frames with white chalk paint and realized that the paint was not holding properly, I decided to wipe it off. Some of the paint was already dried in various spots and that is the look I ended up with. My mistake gave them a sort of distressed look! I thought it was cool!

master bedroom wall mirrors

And how about my large golden photo frame that I painted brown earlier this Spring? Well, it got a makeover in white and has been moved to the bedroom.

This large mirror was at the house from the previous owner. Hubby is not a big fan of it.

You can get a glimpse of the door leading to the bathroom (half bath) from next to the mirror.

I wrote a post on how to write on canvas. Here is the piece displayed in the bathroom.

Here are all the DIY pieces that make the room and bath come together.

As you may notice, the room does not have any huge makeover. I only changed out the color of the decorations and added a couple more items to spruce it up a little.

In reality, the room needs a full makeover with paint and furniture. But one project at a time is the way we are looking at it. Hope you enjoyed the little tour, despite the dark photos. The final part of the tour is the girls room which I hope to have up in the next post.

What do you think of the colors? Do you go with darker or lighter? I would love to know your thoughts in the comments!
