Five Fall Crafts & Activities for Toddlers & Preschoolers

fall crafts

We are always coming up with some kind of activities for the little learners to do around here. More of our Fall activities for toddlers and preschoolers can be viewed here and hereBy the way: Please excuse some of my blurry photos – camera problems here!

Activity #1: Duct Tape Storage Boxes

duct tape 2

I bought some cute little glass bowls from the Dollar Isle at Target and they came in those cute little boxes. The bowls are Threshold Ramekins and look like this below:

rem

I hesitated to throw away the boxes as they seemed a bit sturdy. In addition, they were screaming the word “craft” to me as I removed the bowls from them.

To make the storage boxes: We used 2 small empty boxes (as shown in the photo below), duct tape of color choice, and stickers (I already had the duct tape and stickers on hand). Simply cover the outside of the boxes with duct tape. Then add the stickers. Adding the stickers kept their attention for a little while.

Activity #2: Fall Sensory Bin Sorting Activity

fall bin

What I used for this bin: About 6 cups of oatmeal, sprinkles of cinnamon, and all kinds of random Fall/Autumn stuff we had around the house.

The kids could sort the items in the bin by color or by type of items. Or they could just have fun digging around an eating the oatmeal (like mine did)!

sensory bin2

Activity #3: Dyed Squash Seeds Craft

seeds 3

This one is more meticulous and takes a little more time to do as the seeds are so small. The kids will learn to develop their fine motor skills and would be busy for a little while. Yea!

To dye the squash or pumpkin seeds: I used 1/4 cup water to 1 TBSP white vinegar, food coloring of choice, and actually (squash seeds because I had cooked some squash the previous day and saved the seeds). Place them in separate bowls by color and let them sit in the water mixture for a few hours (or even overnight). Stir occasionally. The longer the seeds are in the water, the more color the seeds would have. After I removed them from the water, I baked them in a 200 preheated oven for 15 minutes.

seeds

Draw a pumpkin (or squash) outline on a piece of construction paper and use glue to attach the seeds unto the pumpkin. Let them dry flat. I set out all the different types of glue on the table because I was not sure which one would hold the seeds best. They ended up using the glue sticks – worked great!

Activity #4: Pudding Finger Paints

paint 3

Edible of course, is the word to describe these paints! I used various types of pudding mixes (Fall colors) to create this one. The pudding mixes included from Top left to right: Vanilla (with added red food coloring), Pistachio (I added a little food coloring here, too), Chocolate, Greek Yogurt (Grape flavor), and at the bottom banana cream (it is yellow but I added food coloring to create the orange one and a little yellow food coloring to the yellow one). For the paint: Use 2 Tablespoons of each mix with 1/4 cup cold milk. Sir until fully mixed. For the vanilla, it seemed like I had to add an additional 2 Tablespoons milk to get the desired consistency.

Activity #5: Leaf Wreath with Bible Verse

leaf wreath 2

We desire to teach our kids that God is the Master Creator behind all the beauty we see during the Fall season! To make this, the kids used paper plates and glued real leaves around the edges (they love collecting all the Fall leaves). Then I used glitter glue to write the verse. After it was dried, I punched a hole at the top of the page and attached a ribbon to it for hanging. Note: The writing may not have turn out all the best because one kid just could not wait to get the glitter glue out my hands to play around with it!

harvest

So here you have it – 5 Fall activities to keep the little ones busy. One activity can be done per day like we did. Our kids love to doing all kinds of activities so sometimes we have to stretch them out over a number of days to keep us from running out of ideas!

Decor & DIY

Fall Mantle and Other Fall Decor Around Our Home

d28

Today I am sharing photos of our Fall mantle and just a few other Fall decor around here. Some of them include my DIY Fall crafts I did earlier this season. And others are store bought. I tend to move stuff around a lot to find the correct fit, so some of the DIY Fall crafts may be in different positions than in the earlier post.

In had intended to do a Fall Home Tour all together of our new home but I am still moving stuff around, deciding on colors, and decorative stuff so I am just not ready to do Home tours.

BTW: The winner of the Baby Blanket Plus $20 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway is Melanie F (Melanieluvs @). She has received an email on how to claim her prizes! Thanks to all who entered and helped promote this giveaway!

Now back to the photos: What I have on here may be a lot of photos, but it really isn’t that much stuff. I took a lot of individual photos for the purpose of describing what we have. Hope you enjoy the photos!

Let’s begin with the outdoors

The picture frame on the left is still waiting to be filled with our family photos – bought it from Ross, too. And so was the clock on the right. It reads “count your blessings”. Love the colors! Ross definitely has a lot of home decor stuff for low prices! At the bottom (next to the basket of veges) is a basket filled with blankets sitting beside a couch. Getting cold around here!

Well, thanks for looking at our Fall decorations. I hope you enjoyed them!

Sitting At Jesus’ Feet – A Cure for Being Overwhelmed!

clothes 7

Recently, I have been thinking about how overwhelmed I become sometimes with house work. Contrary to what some may think, being a homemaker is never an easy task. I love staying at home despite my ability and qualifications to work outside the home. But it is never a matter of getting the home cleaned out in the morning within two hours and then the rest of the day is free. There is always something to do! Ongoing cleaning, laundry, cooking and feeding, children who need attention, and on and on the list goes. . . . Sometimes, I look at my piles and piles of laundry that has been washed over a week but never got put away and wish that they could put themselves away. (This is one of my weak areas, by the way). It is easy to get them in the wash, but to put away immediately does not happen many times, despite my good intentions. I always end up completing some other task and letting the clean laundry wait a little. Uhhhhh!

Just to be transparent here, see the photo above? That is an example of how overwhelmed by a pile of clean laundry I had thrown together. I mean, our clothes, kids clothes, whites, dark, towels, you name it! They were washed separately, but all got mixed up in this huge pile! I had some folded immediately after the wash and others, well I just did not get to them. So as they came from the dryer, I just put them all in a spear room on the bed. Then when we couldn’t find some of our stuff, we just kept digging and digging through the piles to find something. I finally got to it after a week, but by then, of course, there were other loads of laundry to be done! We had just moved into a new home and the task of putting things together and figuring out where every thing goes, was just not happening!

Anyway, as I contemplate on how  the never-ending tasks of keeping home could make a person overwhelm at times, I began to think of Mary and Martha. You see, the account in Luke 10: 30-48 about those two sisters is short, but is so powerful and applicable to homemakers today. When Jesus went to visit their home, Martha got very busy tying to prepare her home to serve Him. When the tasks of serving became so overwhelming to her, she went to Jesus to beg help from her sister, Mary. Now Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet listening to His word. Jesus then told Martha, in a nut shell, that she was too busy doing other things in the home, but her sister Mary, had chosen the better part. That better part, my friends, was the “sitting” at Jesus’ feet and listening to Him. I love that little illustration because Martha reminds us of what we do. On the other hand, Mary reminds us of what we need to be doing.

Matthew Henry, a devotional commentator on scripture verses, puts it this way, “The care of Martha about her domestic affairs: But Martha was cumbered about much serving (Luke 10:40), and that was the reason why she was not where Mary was—sitting at Christ’s feet, to hear his word. She was providing for the entertainment of Christ and those that came with him. Perhaps she had no notice before of his coming, and she was unprovided, but was in care to have every thing handsome upon this occasion; she had not such guests every day. Housekeepers know what care and bustle there must be when a great entertainment is to be made”.  You can read more from this source here.

I am not condemning Martha at all. Martha Henry further comments that she did it in all honor and respect for her Lord. And who wouldn’t? If someone is coming to my home, of course I would want to show that person all the care by going the extra mile! In my opinion, they both are commendable women! I think both women were trying to find some avenue to express their appreciation and show honor to Jesus being in their home. But it is a matter of priority. What and who comes first.

I know this biblical account refers to the idea of a visitor in the home, but isn’t it so true how we tend to get so cumbered with taking care of the home that we sometimes forget who gave us the home? We forget to go sit at His feet, listening and gleaning from His word, and spending time with Him. While we do not have Him physically at our home like Mary and Martha did, we have His ever-abiding presence and His divine word with us. This is not to say that we need to neglect our homes, either. Because we do not want to turn into people who “lack motivation” which is highly against God’s character. He calls them “sluggards”. Just read through the book of Proverbs and you’ll see how God does not like it when people sit around and do nothing. Proverbs 31:10-31 commends the virtuous woman for taking great care of her home. And another passage in Titus 2:4-5 says that the young wives should be taught by those who have more experience to be good home keepers. So does this contradict Martha’s position? No, not at all. She was spending all her time trying to get things in order to serve Jesus as he entered her home. And she forgot to take the time to spend with Him. So yes, we are to be good home keepers, but we also need to take time to be with our LORD. We need to refresh ourselves and listen to what He has for us. Or else, we will just become more and more overwhelmed with all the daunting tasks that surround us.

I find that whenever, I am so overwhelmed and I step back and take some time with Jesus, the tasks seem to become much easier to handle. I find so much more peace and joy in what I do. I seem to have better direction and clarity of mind to get things done. I get so much more done in short increments of time, than when I neglect the “good part”. However, what I do need to always remember, is to NOT wait util I become overwhelmed to go sit at Jesus’ feet, like I do sometimes. It needs to be constant and just a normal part of life! The great missionary, George Muller, wrote in his biography that when he took the time to spend with Jesus, he got more tasks done rather than when he skipped Jesus altogether. (My paraphrase here – not the exact quote for I do not know what I did with the book, but this always stuck with me from the time I read it back in college). Yet I often neglect to do that first!

So with that said, are you a Mary or a Martha? Are you so overwhelmed with the daunting tasks of home, employment, blogging or just whatever you do that you tend to forget to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to what He has to say to you? It is the only way we will grow in Him and know His direction for our lives. Whatever your situation today, take a little time to spend with Jesus, He is worth it all! In addition, it is a great cure for overcoming being overwhelmed because He gives us such peace and calm in whatever we do!

There is so much more that could be said about this topic, but my post is probably already too long. And I think I have already made the point I wanted to make. But I love writing biblical posts! I don’t do them often as I want to because I don’t want to write for writing sake. I want to be guided in my thoughts by the Lord.  I am not sure who all wants to read them but they really help me grow in my walk with God. In addition, I learn so much from the insights from comments of readers on these types of posts and it is just a way to grow together.

She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness (Proverbs 31;27, KJV).

Weekend Review: A Trip to Royal Oak Farm & a Recipe for Homemade Apple Pie

apple pie 1

Last Friday, hubby took the day off work so we could go the farm to pick apples as a family. He had traveled to various states over the past two weeks and wanted to take some time to be with us. Even today, he already went to Wisconsin. Just an overnight trip this time. But going to the farm is kind of an annual thing that we started even before we had kids. We just love when all the yummy Fall fruits are in full bloom and we can go pick them fresh from the trees. The cost may not be as efficient as we would like and the farms are not even close by (at least an hour’s drive). And we chose farms according to what they have ready. But we love the experience! Here are previous posts about our trips. Last year we visited two different farms: Knuton’s Country Harvest in July & Royal Oak Farm in October.

Below are photos of our trip and then a delicious apple pie recipe we made with some fresh cooking apples. Our little 3 year old wanted me to make apple pie from the moment I told her we were going to the farm. She loves cooked apples with all the spices and a little sweet – but she does not eat the crust.

farm 5

I really love how this farm is Christ-centered. Many verses could be seen throughout different areas of the farm. Over the fire place on the left side in the photo below, is a that plaque quotes Romans 11:33-36. And of course, we sat sat around the fireplace and warmed ourselves because it was a bit chilly outside. Then we had some hot cider when we were leaving!

farm 3

And those apples made us some delicious apple pies!

What have you done this  past weekend? Do you ever go visit the farms if you live far away from them? Would love to know!

Glitter Pumpkins Activity for Toddles and Preschoolers

This Glitter Pumpkins activity was such a fun project for the girls. I love their excitement for the little crafts we do around the house.

Glitter pumpkins

Glitter Pumpkins

Note: This post has been updated October 8, 2022 and was first created October 9, 2014, not intentionally with the dates though. My cute little preschooler (then 3.5) and toddler (then 18 months) are now 11 and 9:) Can you believe it? Well after all, it’s being 8 yrs.

This was yet another fun Fall creation for our kids. I got inspired by a few glitter pumpkin ideas online. I just simply glanced over some photos but did not read the instructions. Also, I love seeing all the beautiful glittered ones in the stores (a bit costly, though). I figured with some glue and glitter, it should be pretty easy; and it was! I had bought those little pumpkins for decorations earlier this Fall and our kids love to hold and play with them. And of course, they love glitter! Hence our creation began!

Why Add Glitter to Painted Pumpkins?

Adding glitter to painted pumpkins is just a fun way to add some sparkle to pumpkins. I’m aware that many parents aren’t fans of glitter/kids combo. But we love it – it really doesn’t bother me at all. I keep a stack on hand, in every color I could find for when inspiration hits!

Adding Non-Traditional Colors to Painted Pumpkins

As we were deciding on glitter colors, our preschooler proclaimed she wanted to use pink. At first, I thought to myself that pink is not a traditional Fall color. But then I figured that pink would make her happy and she probably do not understand all these Fall colors anyway, so why not go with her request? What little preschool girl does not like pink and purple?! I also decided to let our younger daughter use purple. I guess we eat blueberries and similar pink and purple color foods during the Fall, too!!

How to Make Glitter Pumpkins

glitter pumpkins 1

What you need: The materials for this project are few

  • decorative pumpkins
  • glue
  • glitter!

What to do:

  • Paste glue all over the pumpkin (except the very bottom). We used Elmer’s glue because it works great for this and it is easy to wash off from your hands. We also used old news paper for protecting our table.
  • Sprinkle a generous amount of glitter immediately all over and let it dry.
  • To create a sort of stripped look, after adding the first coat of glue and glitter, squeeze strips of glue between the “creases” (for lack of  a better word) of the pumpkins. Then sprinkle that part with a different color glue. Very young kids would need some help, though.

After we created the first two pumpkins (the all pink and all purple ones), I loved the idea so much that another day, I had the kids make two more.  I use them as décor on our Fall mantle. And they sure look beautiful on there. I would probably do a post with a photo of them on the mantle sometime.

Glitter Pumpkin Craft are for Adults

I truly loved the look of the glittered pumpkins and could do this often (just even by self) for a simple fun project:) The colors really do pop but truthfully, we probably did have a little too much fun adding way too much glitter:)

glitter pumpkins 2

Have you tried making glitter pumpkins before? They are not only for kids, adults could make them, too!!

A Week of Fall Tree/Leaf Craft Creations for Toddlers & Preschoolers

Fall Tree

Our children had some fun creating some Fall tree and leaf crafts last week. These are very simple to make. We used stuff we already had on had with the added bonus of collecting Real leaves just outside our home.

Here are the creations we came up with – one can be made each day to keep a little one busy.

Creation #1

Real Tree 3

There are so many leaves falling to the ground now. Just go outside, pick up some pretty leaves, a small piece of fallen branch and you can make this creation. We even collected these beautiful ones at our church – they were so beautiful to pass up. Our kids love collecting these leaves.

leaf collecting

Then using a large piece of poster board as a backing, hot-glue the branch to the paper (you can break the branch into smaller pieces for easier gluing). Then strategically place the the leaves to the branch and glue them on. Tacky glue will work and will not burn kids. However, I started to use tack glue and had no patience for the drying so I just went ahead and used the hot-glue. I had one kid carefully place them on the tree.

Real Tree2

Creation #2

Pom Pom tree

Use a piece of construction paper as a backing (whatever color – we used light blue to represent the clouds). Using brown construction paper, draw a tree, outline it, then cut it out. Glue  it unto the backing. If you used brown as a backing, you can just draw a tree on the paper. Using tacky glue or a glue that will actually stick to the pom poms, glue them unto the tree for leaves. The kids can even use a green crayon to create a grassy effect at the bottom of the trees.

Creation #3

Leaf rubbing 1

As a young kid growing up, I frequently did leaf rubbing. It was so much fun for me to see the outcome of the leaves printed on the paper. I was inspired again to really do some with our kids while we were watching a Baby Channel where they were doing leaf rubbing. We found some of these beautiful leaves outside our home and some at our church.

leaf rubbing 2

leaf collecting 2 To do a leaf rub: Place a real leaf between two sheets of white paper. Or lay a white sheet of paper on a table. Place a real leaf with  the backside or vein side facing up like in the image below. Then lay another sheet of white paper over that leaf. Using a crayon, have your child gently color over the white paper on top. As he/she colors, the design of the leaf will begin to show through.

Leaf rubbing 3

I used a black marker to trace an outline of the leaf once the rubbing was done (optional). We also cut them out and made a leaf collage by gluing them on a sheet of construction paper. See below.

We used acrylic paint for this one. I traced out the outline of a tree on a sheet of construction paper. The kids painted the tree brown. Then they dipped their hands in paint and pasted them on the tree for leaves (left side, 3 year old: right side, 21 month old). We also used a paint brush to add some green grass at the bottom.

Creation #5

Apple Tree 4

Using various acrylic paint colors along with some real apples, this is a fun tree to create. As usual, we used construction paper for a backing. Draw the outline of a tree on the construction paper and have your child paint the tree with brown paint. Pour a different color of paint in different little plates. Cut apples in half and stick a small fork in them (some kids may not need a fork they can hold the apples with their hands). Have your child stamp the apples on the tree for leaves.

Apple painting 2

Then let the tree dry. If adding glitter, add it right away before it dries. The glitter makes it very lovely and my kids are huge glitter fans.

Apple tree 5

And the last creation we did #6

fake leaves 2

I downloaded a tree from Microsoft office on line or simple find a Fall tree coloring page online to download. Then we used tacky glue and some fake leaves I had remaining from what I bought last year to create these looks.

fake leaves

These are the trees we created. By the time we go to number 5 or so, one of my kids claimed she was “tired of trees ya’ll). LOL! I understand; I got tired of them, too!

If you are a mom of little ones, what have you been creating with them lately? I always love reading your thoughts in the comments!

Using Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Castile Soap in Homemade Cleaning Products

Dr Bronners 11

Recently, I decided to go a long stretch and purchase Dr. Bronner’s liquid Castile soap. Back in June or July of this year, I was introduced to this soap by one of my dearest friends who is a representative for Young Living Essential Oils. She blogs here at Godoy Family Blog. During one of her Young Living Essential oil awareness classes, she gave us a few examples of how Dr. Bronner’s soap can be used together with essential oils for cleaning. Albeit, I have long lost the hand-out she gave to us. In addition, the first time I saw the soap at Target, I skipped buying it because I saw a huge bottle for close to $20. Did not want to spend $20 on soap. That was over 3 months ago. I still had a desire to buy the soap, though. So a couple weeks ago, I decided I was going to buy it for the $20 to test it out. But when I got to Target, I saw a smaller bottle for $10. I was so happy with spending $10 rather than $20 on soap! There is also the bar soap of that brand for $5 (a tiny bar). I do not know of other local stores that sell the soap. I was only told that Target sells it. Could not find it at Walmart. But I have seen it online, though. Same price, I believe. That stuff’s not cheap!

Dr Bronners 12

Since then, I have been coming up with many uses for the soap. It is a natural cleaning agent and does not need any additional soap added to it for cleaning the areas of your home. I purchased the Lavender so leaves a really nice clean smell. Essential oils is not necessary for adding in unless you desire, too.

Here are some of the many uses I have found for this Liquid Castile Soap (LLS)

All-Purpose Cleaner:

You need:

  • 1/2 cup white distilled vinegar
  • 1/4 cup Dr. Bronner’s LCS
  • 4 cups water (warm or regular)

Directions:

  • Put all ingredients in a spray and give a good shake. The vinegar with the soap makes it a kind of milk-ish color.
  • I use this solution for cleaning areas such as counter tops, spills, appliances such as the microwave etc. Sometimes I’ll just spray it around the house as an air freshener.

Dr Bronners 14

Surface Cleaner:

You need:

  • 1 Tablespoon Dr. Bronner’s LCS
  • 1 cup warm water,
  • 1 Tablespoon white vinegar (optional)

Directions:

  • Mix all the ingredients to together.
  • I use this to cleans surfaces such as counter tops, fridge doors, microwave doors, stoves, etc),  or just whatever surface I desire to clean or give a good wipe down.

Dr Bronners 15

Heavy Duty Cleaner (make a paste):

You need:

  • 2 – 4 Tablespoons DR. Bronner’s LCS
  • 1 cup borax powder or baking soda

Directions:

  • Mix well in a small jar and use for cleaning heavy areas such as stove tops, pots and pans, bath tubs, sinks, and other areas that need extra cleaning.
  • Sometimes, I add a little bit of water to the paste in a stubborn area and let it sit for while. Then I scrub the area with a cleaning brush or rag.

Dr Bronners 9

Window Cleaner:

You need:

  • 1/2 teaspoon Dr. Bronner’s LCS
  • 1 cup water
  • 3-4 drops of lemon essential oil

Directions:

  • Mix everything together in a small spray bottle. Use it to clean windows.
  • Note: I have heard that Lemon Essential Oil is good for cleaning windows and it seems to work.

Dr Bronners 6

 Hardwood Floor Cleaner:

You need:

  • 1 to 2 Tablespoons Dr. Bronner’s LCS
  • 4 cups warm water
  • 2 to 4 Tablespoons white vinegar (optional)

Directions:

  • Mix together in a bowl for cleaning floors. Double the amount in your mop bucket if you are mopping/cleaning a larger area. Money Saving Mom has a recipe on her blog for wood floor cleaner using Dr. Bronner’s soap.

Dr Bronners 10

 Foaming Hand Soap:

You need:

  • 1/4 cup Dr. Bronner’s LCS
  • Water
  • (Optional) 8-10 drops of essential oils
  • Note: Adding essential oils is not necessary as Dr. Bronner’s soap works great on its own. However, I chose to add some Thieves essential oil since it’s good for attacking germs).

Directions:

  • Add the soap and essential oil to a small hand soap spray bottle.
  • Fill with water and shake until foaming.
  • Note: You could totally skip the essential oil, as Dr. Bronner’s soap works great on its own.

Dr Bronners 7

It works great for greasy areas and dishes, too. Simply use the soap in place of regular dish soap liquid, then rinse off.

So these are the many ways I use Dr. Bronner’s liquid castile soap. I am sure there are other ways to use the soap that I would discover as I continue to experiment. There are also suggestions on the bottle of how to use it including using it on your face and body. I have not yet tried them. And my bottle is almost empty! I use it often but I love the soap and don’t mind spending $10 on it every now and again.

Further note: Adding vinegar to Dr. Bronner’s soap turns it into a milk-ish color. Personally, I prefer to add the mixture in this order: first the soap, second the water, and then the vinegar last. I find that adding the vinegar with the soap causes the mixture to have little white pieces of stuff in there (maybe soap). Either order you chose, just remember to give the mixture a good shake and you are good to go!

What do you think about using all those natural cleaning products? Have you heard of or tried this kind of soap at your home? Would so love to hear about it!

Being Content Plus A Lesson Learned While Staying At A Hotel

Being Content is difficult. I would be the first to admit this one. Do you struggle with being content? And contentment comes in various forms: content with who you are, your image, where you are in life, your employment status, your home, and the list goes on and on. . .  .

cont 2

I am here to tell you, I do! And not just in one area but in many. However, today I want to talk about being content with material “stuff”. I have to say that I totally agree with King Solomon when he wrote that the “eye is not satisfied with seeing (Ecclesiastes 1:8). It is so true! The more we see, the more we want. And it is a want, not a need. We want bigger homes (for the wrong reasons), we want prettier cars (for the wrong reasons), we want better jobs (for the wrong reasons), etc. There is nothing wrong with making improvements, but when it is done for the wrong reasons then, we need to reconsider. The internet has made it so opened for us to desire more and more. It is only one click away from everything we desire! And if you are a blogger, you may struggle with this one: trying to keep up with other bloggers and what they do at home. Here is an example:

Recently, I had to sit back and contain myself. I had to tell myself, “NO, I am not blogging for this reason and I will not fall into that trap”. I look at all the blog posts with those beautiful Fall home decorations, and boy is it easy to want to follow and do the same (for the wrong reasons). I had to tell myself, “I will not go broke over this”. Please do not interpret me wrong. I love decorating; and I love a pretty home. In addition, I have already being decorating for Fall. But I will Not loose money over this. In fact, I plan on doing a Fall Decor Home Tour post soon and there may be spots in the home that are still empty because we just moved into it. But I had to remind self that it is Ok. As a homemaker, I want to provide a warm and cozy home for my family! But to go broke because of discontentment is not worth it. I love looking at other’s lovely decor but I am only using this as an example of how the internet could influence someone to become discontent. Below, I want to share a lesson I learned on contentment.

A Lesson Learned about Contentment While Staying at a Hotel(s) for three Weeks

Matthew 6

Quite the contrary you may say, but you could learn a lesson or two from forcefully staying at a hotel for 3 weeks. Actually, we skipped around in 3 different hotels trying to get the best deals and to save money. After that three weeks, I told my hubby that I wish not to go to hotels for a while. Not that the hotel(s) were bad. And you may think 3 weeks is not bad. Should be fun right? Wrong!!! We were not on vacation per say. We still had to do normal things like signing papers with the bank, my husband having surgery, and all kinds of stuff during that time. You see, we sold on our old home and was supposed to close on the new one the same day. Albeit, if you are a home owner, you know how banks work sometimes – NEVER on time with houses! You always end up waiting a couple weeks after your original closing date to move into your new home. (Sigh). You can read more about our move part one and two here and here.

Anyway, I realized that we really do not need as much “stuff” as we think we do. The Apostle Paul says in his first letter to Timothy, that if we have “food and clothing we should be content (1 Timothy 6:8). This verse was a total application for our family while we stayed in the hotel. We were down to just our clothes and a few other necessities. Everything else was in storage waiting to go into our new home. Don’t get me wrong, there were dishes, beds, couches, etc., and other main items in the hotel(s). And I believe they are important! But do we really need 3 and 4 different crock pots? Do we need 5 different cookie sheets? Do we need a small blender, a medium blender, and a large blender? You get the idea!!!! These are the questions I had to ask myself when I realize that all my “stuff” was in storage. And frankly, I did fine without them for those three weeks. It is funny, most of the “stuff” we keep buying because we think we need them, usually just sit in our garage collecting dust, anyway. So why waste our money?

I guess the point I am trying to make is, we need to be content with having our basic needs met. The world has a lot to offer. Especially here in the US where everything is pretty much ready-made for us. I mean, if it is there, why not get it? TV is constantly offering the next best gadget for our kitchens. Magazines, and other forms of advertising are always painting lovely pictures of “things” we need to make our lives better. Some of them are catchy and others not. But we need to sit back and examine ourselves in the light of what God says about contentment. Or we would never realize the road we are treading unless we are forced in a situation where everything is stripped from us, and then we would see how mistaken we truly are (me included).

I love this following quote! I pulled it from the web but it had no source to give the credit to.

contentment

How about you? Do you struggle with being content with material stuff? Do you desire for more and more? I would love to hear your thoughts on this post! Let’s help each other battle the issue of discontentment.
