Edible Necklaces with Froot Loops or Cheerios

These edible necklaces are so fun to make! Make them with your kids for a super fun and edible craft. Your kids will love them!

(This post has been updated on Wednesday August 24, 2022)

Edible necklaces are so fun to make. It’s a fun craft that is great for helping little ones practice their fine motor skills (such as picking things up with their little fingers and threading them). It’s also great for learning hand-eye coordination.

Keep in mind though, that the kids may want to eat the cereal rather than make a necklace:) I don’t blame them. The first time we make these type of necklaces, we used plain cheerios but most of it ended up in my daughter’s mouth. The second time around, I figured I would add extra to the bowl so she can still have some to make the necklace:)

How to Make Edible Necklaces for Kids

What you need:

  • 1/4 cup Cheerios, Froot loops (or any kind of round cereal that is shaped like the ones mentioned)
  • A string of yarn, long enough to make a necklace

Directions:

  • Pour some cereal in a bowl or on a plate
  • Have the child thread the cereal through the string
  • Make a loose Knot at the two ends (loose enough to fit over their head and come off)
  • Let your child wear their cute creation and eat it when they are ready!

Note: Be sure to check your child’s ages and allergies before letting them play with and eat the cereal on this necklace and also play with the string.

Our Daughter Enjoyed Wearing Her Edible Necklace

Here is our daughter wearing her necklace. It lasted about 5 to 10 minutes before “we” ate the cheerios:) Either way, it was fun to create and it does keep the kids occupied for a while.

Encouraging One Another in the Lord

School began 3 weeks ago and I am just now getting a chance to write this post. You can read about my student teaching post here. It was a tough start having to leave the kids at the baby sitter for the first time, and trying to juggle family, school, church, etc.  But God gave us the grace that we needed for that time in our lives. And he used others to encourage us as we continue in His plans for us.

On the first day of school these are the things I received that was such an encouragement to me. Below is a brief explanation of each.

20130903_095856

1) A bottle of water with a verse taped to it from the school’s administrator (I’m not sure if this was meant for me; but all the teachers got one. The teacher I am working with brought it to me and said it was from the principal)…. Either way it ended up on my desk and I thought it was a really nice, encouraging gesture. The verse says, “Serve the Lord with gladness” (Psalm  100:2a, KJV).

 2) A card with an encouraging note and a Dove chocolate bar from our 4th grade lead teacher.

3) A gift from a first year transfer student with a verse on the back.  The verse says, “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us” (1 John 5:14, KJV). There was a note at the bottom of the verse that says his family is praying for me daily. The little pair of scissors on the gift bag is handmade and so cute! Not sure if the sticky note holder is handmade, too. But they are just so cute and girly!

20130903_100008 20130903_100039

How encouraging! I usually look at those verses on my desk often. Sometimes, it is the little encouragement from others that keeps us going.   Praise God for others who care for us and take the time to show it in such simple ways. Let us do the same for one another!

Rice Play – So Much Fun For Our Kids

We frequently have rice play around here. See the new Rice Bin tutorial here.

It is an activity both kids enjoy.

Amazingly, this is one of our kids favorite play – rice!

Pour 2 to 3 cups of rice in a bowl and add food coloring. I added various colors. You can omit the food coloring but I think it makes for more fun when it is colored.

Mix well with hands until the rice is dyed.

Spread  a blanket on the floor and present the kids with measuring cups, spoons, play kitchen toys, etc. Sometimes, rice get all over the floor but that is OK, we just sweep or vacuum when they are done playing.

Let them play!

DSCN5690

S really enjoyed measuring and pouring. Baby B loves grabbing a handful, letting it go, and then splattering the rice all over.

Our Weekend in Review – Weekend Getaway

My hubby wanted to take a small trip before the summer ends. He discussed going to Wisconsin Dells but I was not to thrilled about the idea. I had been to the Dells twice before and just was not “feeling” it this time around.

The kids had not been there yet so I guess it could have been nice for them.

Anyway, we settled on just spending an overnight within the area and then going to Six Flags Great America amusement park on Saturday. So Friday evening the entire family spent the night at a hotel (about 40 minutes) away from our present home. It was about 5 minutes down from where we used to live.

Six Flags is about an hour away from our present home. So from the hotel to Six Flags is about 20 minutes. We did this because the hotels were cheaper out there.

While Six Flags may not be a getaway activity for some, it was for us. The last time I went there was 6 years ago. The kids had never been (and of course, they are still very little). But now you understand why it was a getaway for us.

Below are some of the activities we did.

Friday evening we ate at Golden Corral – one of hubby’s favorite buffets.

Then we went to the hotel – Courtyard Marriot Hotel.

S entertaining us – the baby could not stop chuckling:)

DSCN6233 DSCN6241

Saturday morning, we went to the pool at the hotel.

DSCN6246 DSCN6252 DSCN6254 DSCN6273 DSCN6272 DSCN6274 DSCN6265

Then we drove to Cracker Barrel – by the time we got there we decided to order lunch instead of breakfast. It is real close to Six Flags.

DSCN6291 DSCN6287 DSCN6290

Off to have some fun

DSCN6292 DSCN6296 DSCN6301

This is a huge Merry-Go-Round – Most of the activities and rides we did were for the kids sake. Although hubby could not leave without riding the roller coasters, twice.

DSCN6302 DSCN6303 DSCN6305

I wanted to go on the Merry-Go-Round but baby B decided to take a nap

DSCN6328 DSCN6334 DSCN6329

This was the baby’s favorite – she is 7 months old and really enjoyed hanging unto the steering wheel while these cars moved around a path.. The people standing by, awaiting their turn, thought it was funny. She was soooo cute. I wanted to get a photo from the front view with her but hubby was in another car and I had the camera…Oh well!!

DSCN6343 DSCN6345

Crazy folks on a huge roller coaster

DSCN6347 DSCN6348Just hanging out..

DSCN6350 DSCN6323

About to leave..Look at all the cars as far as the eyes could see – and these are only a few sides of the HUGE parking lot. The lot is actually numbered so people could remember where they parked. Thousands upon thousands – crazy!

DSCN6358 DSCN6359 DSCN6357

And finally we made it to our car -whoo!!!!

DSCN6360

We had planned to go a nearby mall after when we left but it was already too late. There is a kids store in there that has really nice yet reasonably priced outfits for kids. But we wanted to get our tired kids home for bed since the next day was church. So we drove back home and I decided to visit a few stores in the same complex, close to home.

Got a few outfits from Carter’s for our girls…especially the toddler.

DSCN6361

She has outgrown all her baby-ish stuff and is constantly needing more. The baby (7 months) has tons new as well as passed down from her sister. Although, I must say, she is big and quickly outgrowing her clothes. Over the weekend, about 5 different people thought she was close to a year old.

In there pretty new dresses ready for church yesterday.

DSCN6370

Also, I stopped at Home Goods store. I spotted a purple magazine rack that I thought would go well with the kids bathroom. They only had purple color in this one.

DSCN6379 DSCN6378

But then I spotted a kind of brown one that matched our bathroom perfectly. They were both on sale and they were on my list of things to buy anyway.

DSCN6381 DSCN6377

Oh, and a cute little trash can for the kids play area, that I found at $5 Below store.

DSCN6386

I know, TMI, but it is fun to talk about it for those who care to read:)

Book Review – True Woman 101

In the earlier months of this year, I decided I will try to read at least two books this year. So far, half the year is gone and I have only gotten through one.

I am, by no means a fast reader and I do not have a consistent reading schedule. So I try to catch a couple chapters here and there.

The book I just finished reading is called True Woman 101 by Nancy Leigh DeMoss & Mary A. Kassian. It is an eight week study but I did not read it in the order it suggested.

DSCN1174

Basically, the authors address the feminist movement which began in the early 1960’s. Women sought to obtain equality with men which included areas of employment, voting, property rights, equal pay, etc. Unfortunately, this movement left a long lasting impact on the American culture toady. God made women to be a help-mate to men but women have long strayed away from that truth. When God created men and women, he created them in such a way that their calling would glorify Him. This is not to say that either gender is better than the other in any form or shape. But women want more!!! Their desire is to do everything that men do and to do it even better.

DSCN1175

DeMoss & Kassian use a wide variety of scripture verses to urge women to embrace the beauty of womanhood that God has given to them. They encourage women to take on the role of motherhood & keeping the home as God intended. They are not saying that women cannot work outside the home nor can men do work around the home. But they are simply encouraging women to take their place and to set an example for the next generation to follow.

Stock of Groceries for Toddler & Baby Play – $25 or Less

Call me weird but I thought I would share a post on the list of grocery items I keep around to make homemade fun activities for my kids – Less than $25.

DSCN6085

I figured it may be best to do this since I am usually using up lots from my pantry and then having to buy more. In addition, I am usually crying on the “inside” about my good rice, oatmeal, flour, etc. that I have just used up:)

Many of the activities I make from pantry items can be found on my all things baby page under baby activities/play and toddler activities/play.

The list includes: Quaker oats, rice, cornmeal, all-purpose flour, cornstarch, pasta, salt, baking soda, gelatin, colored cereal, salt, nestle milk, kool-aid, white vinegar, food coloring.

There are a couple other things I discovered I bought after I had already taken the photo – like cream of tartar for using in homemade play dough. We just add more to the list as the need arises.

The most expensive item on this list was the Froot Loops cereal. I paid around $3.38 for it and it also included a free book with this purchase. I have not opened the box yet to see the book.

Needless to say, all of this cost me about $20, with tax, a little less than $25.

Not too bad…Plus our kids, 2 and 1/2 year old and even our 7 month old love getting busy with all kinds of homemade activities.

They seem to prefer them more than just regular toys.

In addition, they learn a lot from these hand-on activities:

explore the senses, tactile learning, creative and imaginative play, large and fine motor skills development such as finger muscles, and the list goes on …..

So,I guess I am not too weird, after all!

Make-Ahead Freezer-Friendly Apple Pie

After visiting a farm last week, I had all these Granny Smith apples to use in recipes. This is one of the recipes I decided to make with some of the apples.

DSCN5712

Ingredients:

For the crust:

4 cups pastry flour

3/4 cup cold, unsalted butter

1 tsp salt

5 to 8 TBSP ice water

Mix flour and salt together. Mix in the butter until it looks like crumbs. Add the water in increments (a tablespoon at a time), mixing with a fork until blended. Form dough into a ball and cut in half. Wrap each half in plastic wrap or wax paper and chill about 30 minutes. Roll each half of dough on a floured surface into two 9″ circles. Set aside.

For filling:

4 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced

3/4 cup light brown sugar

1 cup raisins

1 and 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

1 tsp vanilla

2 TBSP all-purpose flour

1 TBSP heavy whipping cream

1  TBSP butter

Directions:

In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients except together except butter. Place one pie crust in a pie pan. Add filling, dot with butter. Cover with the other crust. Seal sides and cut out any extra crust. Shape the edges of the crust. Place in a freezer bag; seal, and label. Freeze until ready to bake – up to 4 months.

Instructions for baking the frozen pie: Remove the frozen pie from the freezer bag and cover with foil. Bake in a 450 degrees oven 15 minutes. Lower the temperature to 375 degrees and bake for 15 minutes more. Uncover pie and bake an additional 55 to 60 minutes more or until the filling is bubbly and the crust is golden.

Below is a photo of a baked pie. My other photos of the slices were kind of blurry so I did not put them up.
