Make-Ahead Freezer-Friendly Apple Pie

After visiting a farm last week, I had all these Granny Smith apples to use in recipes. This is one of the recipes I decided to make with some of the apples.

DSCN5712

Ingredients:

For the crust:

4 cups pastry flour

3/4 cup cold, unsalted butter

1 tsp salt

5 to 8 TBSP ice water

Mix flour and salt together. Mix in the butter until it looks like crumbs. Add the water in increments (a tablespoon at a time), mixing with a fork until blended. Form dough into a ball and cut in half. Wrap each half in plastic wrap or wax paper and chill about 30 minutes. Roll each half of dough on a floured surface into two 9″ circles. Set aside.

For filling:

4 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced

3/4 cup light brown sugar

1 cup raisins

1 and 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

1 tsp vanilla

2 TBSP all-purpose flour

1 TBSP heavy whipping cream

1  TBSP butter

Directions:

In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients except together except butter. Place one pie crust in a pie pan. Add filling, dot with butter. Cover with the other crust. Seal sides and cut out any extra crust. Shape the edges of the crust. Place in a freezer bag; seal, and label. Freeze until ready to bake – up to 4 months.

Instructions for baking the frozen pie: Remove the frozen pie from the freezer bag and cover with foil. Bake in a 450 degrees oven 15 minutes. Lower the temperature to 375 degrees and bake for 15 minutes more. Uncover pie and bake an additional 55 to 60 minutes more or until the filling is bubbly and the crust is golden.

Below is a photo of a baked pie. My other photos of the slices were kind of blurry so I did not put them up.

Edible Moon Sand Recipe With Flour and Oil

Create the Edible Moon Sand from Flour and Oil for your little ones to play. It’s a safter option than regular sand for the little ones.

Moon Sand

New Updated Version August 2023

My daughter loves playing in sand. I saw this idea for making moon sand from Tammy over at creativekkids.com. I modified it and used canola oil instead of baby oil. My kid loves it! She played with it for a good while, about 45 to 50 minutes or so when we first made it. And she always wants to keep playing with it. I may need to make her some more since what we made is all gone,

These little fun items cost me about $3 bucks from the Dollar Tree. I really love them for our toddlers play. They are perfect for scooping, pouring, sifting, etc.

DSCN4905

How to Make Edible Moon Sand

 To make use:

  • 8 Cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 Cup plus 1/4 Cup Canola Oil
  • A Large Container
  • Scoop and Pour Toys

Directions:

  • Pour flour in a large bowl or bin (I used a storage tub)
  • Add in oil
  • Mix well until the mixture looks like damp sand
  • The Moon-Sand is now ready

How to Store Moon Sand

The moon sand will last for a while if you cover it. Simply cover it tightly and the bin in your garage or storage area. In the photo above, I placed the play things in the tub in what was left of the Moon Sand. We didn’t have much left at all. In fact, as seen below, that is what is left behind on the concrete. Here are the main reasons why:

  • My toddler decided to throw some around in the air like rain drops.
  • In addition, I had it in a loosely covered bin outside and I am assuming the squirrels got into it because I saw one sitting on the top of the bin one day and the next morning, the cover was off.
  • I threw it away because I want it to be safe for my toddler in the event she puts it into her mouth.

How to Clean Up Moon Sand

Moon Sand can be easily whipped off wooden floors but can be hard to come off concrete. You may want to protect the area with a plastic table cloth before allowing the child to play with the sand on concrete. However, if your child spills flour on your wall, use a good powerful spray with a hose and it will be good to go again. (I know, my wall needs a power-washing also but who’s saying? The important thing here is that the child had tons of fun)!Have you made Moon Sand before using Oil and Flour? Please share your thought in the comments.

Play Sand Activity for Kids

Playing with sand is so fun and one of the easiest activities to create for children. Our daughter has so much playing with sand; it’s one of the things I always love having on-hand.

Kids love to play with sand! Play sand is one of the easiest activities for small children as there is no prepping required. All you need is to get some sand and some Sandcastle toys. If you live next to the ocean, park, or a place that have sand, try to collect some for your little one. Otherwise, play sand can be purchased at Walmart around $4.95 a tub. One tub is big enough for a large roasting pan.

Playing with Sand

Playing with sand is not only fun but it has many benefits for kids. The possibilities are endless – The kids learn to scoop, dump, pour, and build. It’s so much fun for children. After you get the sand, dump it somewhere on the ground, in a bin or a baking/roasting pan, then let the kids play. Add some little bowls, measuring cups, spoons, and sand play toys if you have any.

Creating an Island with Play Sand

Our daughter created an island. She used some beach/sand toys along with grass. I bought these sand toys from the Dollar tree. It came in a pack with beach toys for the kids during the summer time. I love all the little scoop and pour toys the stores sell for the kids that they can use for other play too (water play, rice play, sensory bins). Seriously, it makes me want to with the toys too.

Do your kids play with sand at home or on the beach? What is their favorite thing to do with the sand?

Teach Your Toddler to Wash Dishes

It is never to early to teach kids how to wash dishes or how to do a few minor, kid safe house chores. This is sensory activity for them, too. The idea of seeing, touching, smelling, and even hearing the sounds of the water and the dishes as they wash them. Not to mention, they are developing their motor skills!

DSCN5095 DSCN5094

Whenever I am making a recipe, my toddler always wants to help me make it. And sometimes she just wants to stand at the sink and play in the water with little cups, bowls, and spoons. She will fill, dump, refill, dump, and over and over again. So one day, I had seen a post on one site that talks about toddlers washing dishes. Then I decided to teach my kid how to do so. She really enjoys doing it at least for now.

Of course, I have to tell her you need to wash this part, and that part, and rinse it properly, and even take the soap filled ones from the drainer and rinse it over again, but she is only a little toddler so that is quite OK.

Todler Nibble Tray Idea #2 for Toddlers

My toddler really enjoys nibble trays. We try to do nibble trays every so often, especially on Tuesdays which we have set aside as Library Days. Usually, I get the trays prepared before heading out and put it in the fridge. When we return home, lunch is ready!

NB: I do not keep the crackers in the fridge; they remain out until ready to serve.

This is another example of what’s on her tray – apples, oranges, tomatoes (yes, she loves tomatoes and all kinds of veges), shredded cheddar cheese, raisins, and wheat crackers.

Nibbling away…..

DSCN4835

All done nibbling for now – she ate some from each, but I can tell that she enjoyed all of the top row fruits and veges:)

Our Surprise Family Vacation, 2013

On April 7 to 18, 2013 we went to Grenada to visit my family. My sister and one of my brothers were the only ones who knew were were coming. My mother was so surprised to see us! Yet, she, along with everyone else were so happy to us, especially to see our two girls. They had never seen them before! At the time, baby Brianna was 3 months old and Shenice was 2 years, 4 months old (28 months). My parents and the kids aunts and uncles just could not get over them:)

Here are some photos from our trip. Hope you enjoy looking at them.

We arrived at Miami International Airport – The Kids in jammies because we left home in the weeeee hours of the morning. In addition, it was way too cold to change them into anything else before we left. It was much easier to scoop them up in their jammies.

Our Weekend in Review – Park Play Date for Our Kids/Dinner

This weekend was a pretty mild one for our family. Hubby had been traveling out of state all week for business purposes. He returned late Friday night so Saturday we did not do much running around like we normally do. However, one of our family friends called up and invited us to meet at a park for a play date with our kids. It turned out that the intended park was hosting some kind of carnival so we had to find another one to make our kids happy. This July weather today was a bit chilly, though, so most of us were in light sweaters.

DSCN5725 DSCN5726 DSCN5728 DSCN5730 DSCN5734 DSCN5735 DSCN5736 DSCN5740 DSCN5741 DSCN5742 DSCN5743 DSCN5744 DSCN5745 DSCN5746 DSCN5747 DSCN5748

The family then proceeded to invite us to their home for dinner, which we accepted.

The upcoming next 3 photos depicts my daughter’s desire to go play with the toys at the other family’s home. Our friend mentioned to her that we were going to her home, so my daughter took her hand and proceeded to walk with her. She did not even want to get in the car with mommy and daddy, even though were all going the same place.

It was a fun time for the kids and for us adults, as well. Thanks to our friends for a beautiful evening!

Water Park Sprinkler Fun

Toddlers love to play in water. If there is free access to water sprinkling locations in your area, try taking your kids there every once in a while (or at least one time) during the summer and watch them have fun!

This one is next to Oberweis Ice Cream shop not too far from our local library.

DSCN4948

A couple Fridays ago, I took my toddler to the water park but first we stopped by a Farmer’s Market set up in the area.

And then we headed over to the water park to have a little fun.

There were other kids, too. This photo shows a little girl we met there.

“All Things Messy” Table

It may be a good idea to have a separate table for toddlers to work on, in order to cut down on the “mess” they may create by doing all the fun activities we create for them.

This is a table we had since we got for our wedding shower.

DSCN5073

We have used it as our main dinning table, and as a breakfast table once we got a bigger dinning set. I had it in the garage with some stuff on it and decided to use it for my toddler to work on for “all table activities messy”. That way, we would not have to worry about stuff getting all over our living room floor nor piling up our other tables inside.

We open the garage door to let the sunlight in and to view the beautiful scenery while we work!

Just set it up, throw a plastic table cloth over it, and let the kids go to work.

DSCN5076

Clean-up could always take place later, if time does not permit.

Kids Backyard Pool Fun

Ever since my toddler was around maybe 17 or 18 months, I thought it would be nice if she had one of those little blow up pools to play with outside. You see, she loved going to the swimming pool in the area where we lived. At times, I was so tired of hearing her asking me about going to the pool. Many times, when we could not go to the pool, I would fill up the bath tub, add a huge amount of soap bubbles and let her swim around in there (of course we me sitting there monitoring her).

Anyway, so I wanted to buy her a blow up pool but we lived in a town home and had no place to put it. So the first thing I thought of when we were only looking at the home we now own, was GREAT now I can get her one of those pools. My hubby said, “Well, where will you put it?” I said, “Right there!”

So this summer, I picked up a little $5 blow-up one at Target.

DSCN5046 DSCN5044

We tried it twice, but I find it was too small for her, let alone, the baby was in there, too. See how small she is in there (below).

DSCN5048 DSCN5050

So hubby and I decided to buy the plastic one instead. Found @ Walmart for $9 and cents. Ah, so much better!

DSCN5260

No blowing up, just fill with nice warm water (for the kiddos), maybe throwing in a few water toys, and let them enjoy!

DSCN5261   DSCN5271

Here I am pretending we are going to a real pool. See my little picnic and pool basket with towels and other necessities. And they are also dressed in their bathing suites. We are just out the back door (LOL).

5 Sensory Play Ideas for Babies – From 6 Months Old

These simply activities will help to stimulate babies senses – see, touch, smell, maybe even sound, and of course, they will want to taste everything. Mine especially loved feeling them, making marks in them, and trying to eat them.

1) Homemade Moon Sand – See activity for toddlers here

She enjoyed grabbing a few handfuls, squeezing them, and then letting them go again.DSCN5022 DSCN5020 DSCN5023

Mini Jello Building Blocks

This is another fun activity, involving the senses, to do with your toddler. Once again, totally safe and fun! I saw this idea in a kids activity book from the local library.

DSCN5390

To make:

Use a few boxes of different colour gelatin.

DSCN5361

Follow the instructions to make it on the box except use only half the amount of liquid. Most of them say use 1 cup of boiling water and 1 cup cold. So instead, use 1/2 cup boiling and 1/2 cup cold.

DSCN5362

Freeze according to instructions.

DSCN5383

Remove from the freezer and cut into mini cubes.

DSCN5384DSCN5385

Place them in a bowl and let your little one use them to build a tall tower. I spread a sheet of construction paper on my counter top and let mine build her blocks there. Some of them tumbled over, especially as they started to melt a little. But it was fun to watch her enjoy herself picking them up and building away again!

DSCN5389

Then I spread a large bath towel on the floor, added construction paper, and let her and her sister play.

DSCN5406

NB: Note that the unflavoured jello works best for this activity. It has a firmer and very interesting texture than the flavoured jello when frozen with 1/2 the liquid (see the image below). Almost as if you could twist it apart with a lot of effort. I tried biting a piece and just could not. It took me about 5 minutes to get the frozen piece of unflavoured jello cut up. Where as the flavoured ones took only a couple of seconds each.

With the unflavoured one, the blocks are more likely to stay in place. To make the different colours, you can add food colouring during the mixing. Either way, flavoured or unflavoured, the kids will have fun. Well, at least mine did. Oh, and she sure had fun eating all the flavoured ones, too. I had not made any jello since she was born. Surprisingly, she liked the cubes.

For the baby activity with this, just squish a variety of colors together in a plate and let her feel the texture – See my post here on sensory play for babies.
