The kids are off to school for the new school year. Summer seem to have flown by. But the School year has started back and so we go with it.
Grades the Kids are in this Year
We now have a Highschooler at 14 yrs old, in 9th grade
We have a Middle schooler at 12 yrs old, in 7th grade
And we have an Elementary child at 10 yrs old, in 4th Grade – He started a grade behind in school.
Different Schools This Year
All the kids are in different schools this year. The girls simply moved to the next grade level of school in the area and our little boy got accepted into the Math and Science school. It’s a great, desirable school and that has high reviews. It’s actually a Magnet school that does the voting system. At a point during the school year, usually around February, the school district sends out School Choice Forms where the parents can choose up to 5 schools they may want their kids to go to. The kids can only be chosen for one of these schools. The results usually come out around April letting the parents know if the kids have been accepted or are on a wait list. That way, families could know before the school year ends if their kids are going to a new school or will remain in their current school.
The choice is always up to the parents though to accept the offer or to decline it. So if the parents have a change of heart or something else comes up why the kid can no longer attend the offered school, they can decline.
Kids who are waitlisted can get into their school choice if their wait list number is low. We’ve been on wait lists for over 100. But if a child is like number 1, 2, 3 or something very low on the wait list, that child most likely will get it. Well, at least mine did. He was number 3 on the wait list and we got the notification of his acceptance in June.
I’ve had a daughter got accepted into a school after the new school year has already started. But at that point, we didn’t transfer her. She was in Middle School 7th and wanted to stay and I think we were torn whether to transfer her also. One reason been that she was heavily into music with playing the violin at her school and the offered school had no music. But anyways, my son is at the new school now. His other school was awesome, I even worked there for a while, but we needed a change.
And to be honest, I didn’t have any hopes that we would have a chance. I imagine that many kids would apply to that school. In addition, I have no idea if there are specifics they look for when choosing kids for this school or if the kids name just pop up on a voting pole or something. But he got into it.
