One of my favorite things to create during the holidays is cookies jar villages. They are stunning and although I’ve only just used them as decorations in our kitchen they will make wonderful simple gifts for others.
I first came across the idea while flipping through a magazine a while back. I don’t remember what magazine it was or how it was made. All I remember is seen brown cookies (I think they were gingerbread) cookies in jars and loved the idea ever since. Since I no longer have that magazine (and I do NEVER get rid of magazines, old or new) I having been adding my own spin on cookie villages in jars.
How to Make Christmas Cookie Jar Villages
You’ll need
- Large glass food jars
- Christmas cookies
- Powdered sugar
- Thin holiday ribbon
- Small ornaments
- tree
First Fill the jars with powdered sugar – about halfway up. Don’t worry about making the powdered sugar leveled. It needs to look like a snowy hill.
Next add a cookie. Start from the back. I usually make these trees to set the tone of the trees on a snowy hill look. This year, I added some snowmen and candy canes too.
Three cookies is what I usually add but if there is room in your jars, add up to four or however many you think would look right in the jar without making them look too cluttered. The key is to let the cookies show in the snow.
When you are finished adding cookies, cover the jars and wrap them around once with a string of ribbon. See below.
Next thread a small ornament through each ribbon. Tie the bow and lastly, add a branch of green spruce to top it off.
The final product should look like this next photo. I think the addition of the snowman made the jars look even more real.
As mentioned earlier, you can either give them as gifts to others or use them for decorating your table or kitchen during the holidays.
