Our Kids Summer Reading Bundle

It is amazing how children learn so much from books. In fact, it is often said that young children learn most between ages 0-5 years old. Reading is not only fun, but it is also very informative and is a critical factor in language development.  See this site here for more info. I am hoping that with all the electronic books and gadgets that are prominent today, that good old books will still stand the test of time.

reading 2

Our children love books read to them (18 months old and 3 years old). In fact, I have not yet met a parent who has not introduced their children to books from the time they were babies. Often, our children will go to the basket where I keep some of their books and pick out some to read. Sometimes, I can even hear the 3 year old trying to read to herself or to one of her dolls or stuffed animals. It is just too cute!

In order to foster our children’s good reading habits and to keep them from being bored with the books we have, we often go the library and borrow new ones (so thankful for libraries). These are a new set we borrowed a couple days ago after returning some to the library. We picked out 23 but the library allows us to borrow up to 80 books at a time. Our children are also enrolled in the library’s summer reading program where they earn prices for reading certain kinds of books.

These are the books we are going to use for our Ocean Theme Week during the summer. We will learn about the ocean and do related crafts and activities at home.

ocean books

I hope you are finding time to read to your young children. Most times, we read at least 3 to 4 times daily, early morning, noon, at evening, and night or just whenever we feel like reading a good book.

What have your children been reading this summer? Having you been utilizing your local library? I would love to hear from you in the comments section!

Finding Joy In God Through Chaos

I walked into the kitchen to what seemed to me like a tornado wrecked room. Not that I did not know the mess was there but along with the rest of the messy rooms in our home, and the not so happy past few days we had, I just could not deal with a home that looked like chaos, too. In addition, we had just returned home from the hospital that morning with hubby. He was out playing soccer with some folks from church the previous evening and fractured a muscle in his knee. Thankfully, it was not his driving knee, but to be safe, I got the kids up early that following morning and we drove him to the hospital. We received fast service because we went so early. So that was a true blessing!

But when we returned home and I saw all that needed to be done to make our living space a home again, I panicked. I did not know where to start. I just could not decide with which room to begin. Every piece of grocery we owned was laid out on the kitchen counter from the previous day. I had decided that I should clean out the cupboards and make a dinner menu from what we already had instead of purchasing new grocery.

As the frustration built up with the chaos that was present both mentally and physically, a hubby who could not do much for himself and me, and two little kids who needed my attention, and the past few unhappy days, I just wanted to crawl into a space and hide. And then it hit me! “Maybe I should leave everything the way they are and go spend some time with God when the kiddos are napping”. God has a way of making things right and giving us clear directions where there seem to be no pathway. And so I did!

joy

After prayer and seeking God’s direction to help me find a way to clean and deal with all the chaos that seemed overwhelming, I felt instant peace. Another way I found encouragement is through a song by Keith & Kristyn Getty. It is called, Still My Soul Be Still. By the way, I did not attempt to clean or do anything until the kids woke up from their naps. I laid in bed, prayed, and read for a little bit.

Later that day, I was able to write out my to do list and attack the work one at a time, starting with the kitchen. Even the kids cooperated that afternoon. Hubby laid on the couch and the kids played in the living room and in their room without wanting my attention. This really surprised me. Even the 18 month old did not seem to desire my undivided attention. She would come in the kitchen sporadically and play but did her own thing. Then for dinner, hubby requested fried chicken. I normally do not cook fried foods (I bake fry them in the oven). But I figured I would grant his request since the poor thing had a rough weekend. I made fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and some green beans all without the kids needing me. Yummy!

Not only did God calm my heart and helped me with the cleaning, but He also helped me to rest in His will in all that was happening. I did not get all the cleaning done in one day. But I was able to see clearly and eventually, got things looking like a home again over the past few days. And all the other things did get better! Hubby still walks with crutches and has a banded up knee, but he is able to drive himself to work (no train for him with crutches on), and we are able to laugh and find joy in the midst of it all.

This just shows me that God is in control. And when we put Him first, He always comes through for us. Did I find Him through the chaos and through those not so happy moments? Yes. Not that He was not always there; I just did not take the time to realize His presence. Not only did God calm my heart but He also calmed my hubby and kids that day too. I can thank Him that at least I (we) have a home that gets messy; some people have no place to call their own (they live on the streets). I can thank Him that at least I have a true and living God who hears and answers my prayers and is there to help me carry on. What a blessing and what an AWESOME God I serve!

Nehemiah 8:10 says, “Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the JOY of the Lord is your strength”. (KJV Edition).

How have you experienced joy through God in your home this past week. I would love to hear and be encouraged by you!

Frozen Themed Activities & Crafts for Preschoolers

I took a little break from blogging (which was very much needed). My blog does not make any money, neither do I have the time to commit to making money with it. So I am not obligated to post regularly as a profitable blog may require. However, I will try to post at least once a week, or more if I can because I still love the idea of blogging for the fun of it and to help us remember the things we did as a family. But even the idea of once a week gets overwhelming at times!

frozen theme

Anyway, I have NOT yet come across a young child who is not in love with the movie, Frozen. Even our 18 month old daughter finds it very entertaining, especially the songs and the funny parts of the movie. our 3 year old daughter wants to watch the movie every second of the day. In fact, she calls herself, Anna, and calls me Elsa🙂 So I have to set limits with Frozen. Both kids can be heard singing parts of the song, Let it Go, very often.

I have come up with a few craft and activities they can do at home. They are geared from preschoolers age or younger if they can do it. Our 18 month old helped paint a few items below. Frozen themed coloring pages is another great activity that they do often. Our 18 month old really enjoys coloring!

Now unto the activities.

  • Shaving Cream Sensory Activity

To make this activity: Empty 1 can shaving cream in a large bowl. Stir it well – it makes a lot once it is stirred. Add some fun blue and silver glitter. That’s it!shaving 2

  • Craft Item holders

To make: Paint white Styrofoam cups with blue acrylic paint. Sprinkle with silver, white, or even blue glitter while the paint is still wet. Allow to dry. If desired, hot glue on some blue ribbons on the cups.

  • Popsicle stick figures

To make: Print out a Frozen character printable. Go here for an example. Cut out the characters. Hot glue them unto popsicle sticks. Tie with ribbon bows, if desired.

  • Popsicle Stick Snowflakes

To make: Use blue popsicle sticks or paint them with blue acrylic paint. While the paint is still wet, add blue, white, or silver glitter. Let them dry. Next, glue the sticks together as shown in the above photo. Then glue on white pompoms or small cotton balls unto the edges and one in the middle. (I used large cotton balls cut into small pieces).

Have fun creating with your little ones!

When God blesses, you just have to keep on going – Featured @ Money Saving Mom

cupMy intent was to cut back on posting for a while. Our family has too much going on at the moment and sometimes typing another post takes too much time. I wanted a break to create our toddler’s summer preschool work. However, last Thursday, I posted the last post in my homemaking cleaning and organizing series. I discussed how I got rid of a huge clutter of mail and in return, got some debt paid off. Generally, I do not like taking about our personal debt on the blog, but I felt like there was no way around it for that particular post. You can  read the post here – Taming Mail Clutter!

Then I submitted this post over at MoneysavingMom (MSM). I knew it was in line with the concept of her website. She accepted the post and put it up on her site, last Friday. I intended for her to put up half the post and then a read more………. at my site (only if people cared to read the entire story). Instead, she directed the entire post back to my site. Therefore, people could read it on here. That in itself was a true blessing! Here is what Crystal had to say about the post http://moneysavingmom.com/2014/05/testimonial-read-book-paid-1000-2-months.html.

And let me tell you how this post blessed others and me:

  • I had 6,044 views on Friday alone
  • I heard from others (and I saw from the traffic) that it was one of the top posts on her blog
  • I received around 30+ comments from her readers
  • I gained some new followers
  • I also met a few more bloggers
  • People were inspired to de-clutter their mail.

You see, being featured at MSM is no small “thing”. I see it as a work of God. Crystal (the author), is well known for helping people save money and live simple lives so they can give more to God’s work. She is a dedicated Christian woman who is richly blessed by God along with her family. In addition, she is an awesome speaker, author, and has been featured on some TV shows. I so admire how structured she is in keeping her family and her business on schedule. I know she is mere human just like anyone of us and is not perfect. But she is an awesome person! Her website is one of the top sites I know of. I do not take this lightly.

Featured on MoneySavingMom.com

So as I saw how much traffic I got because of her, it made me think twice. My site is out there and more people know about it. My blog is nothing special when compared to Crystals. I do not teach people how to save money or get their lives organized. I only blog about all the happenings we do as a family. But what if those readers came back for more after they read that one post last Friday? Even if one reader came back, that is still plenty. It is still a blessing! So I guess on that note, I will have to try to have some post up!

I am so thankful to God for the opportunity to be featured over at MSM. Just when I was about to cut back, He gave me much traffic. Now if only I could keep up with posting! My cup is overflowing and I know it is because of the Lord! Psalm 107:1 says, Oh give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good; for his mercy endures forever.

Homemaking Cleaning & Organizing Series: Taming Mail Clutter

How de-cluttering our mail helped us to pay off close to $1,000 in two months, Save Money, and Give us a Peace of Mind

20140213_174804

We had a system; a great little system that kept all our mails in one small folder. It was my husband’s from college, but it was organized according to the alphabet system. With this system, I knew exactly where to find any piece of mail I needed. Then we moved, got rid of the folder that was not falling into pieces, and things went downhill ever since.

All daily incoming mail was now placed in a small brown basket where they would eventually be looked over. When the basket was filled the mail would be tossed into a huge storage bin. Then the process would start all over again.  Needless to say, our mail became a pile of clutter that no one wanted to attack.

To make matters worse, due to life events and nursing home transfers and so forth, all my mother-in-law and grandmother-in-laws mail were now being delivered to our home and included in the clutter.  Mail was now everywhere in unwanted spots, such as on the dinning table, bookshelf, and in other areas of the home.

As a homemaker, I had expressed my distaste to the family about the clutter of mail  that seemed to be piling higher and higher. I even devised a plan to keep the in-laws mail in a separate bin since they were not reading them. That way all their mail could be in one area. And if there came a time when they could get their mail, the entire bin could be delivered to them. They could sort it out because I have no idea what is what in their mail.

In addition, I had expressed that junk mail should be tossed immediately to avoid the clutter.

Albeit, we did not follow these plans and so I got discouraged and just did nothing else to solve the clutter.

Despite this situation, I had an even bigger issue hanging over my head. I knew there were some bills to be paid that was drowned in the mess. I had contemplated for months upon months how and where to start. You see, cleaning and organizing the mail is not my favorite chore but I knew it had to be done. The debt continue to hang over my head. . . and the clutter kept pilling higher and higher.

A few months ago, I decided to take control, take some time to organize the mail, and tame that clutter. Especially after reading Crystal Paine’s book, Say Goodbye to Survival Mode. She discussed how to take control of our finances and survive other areas in our lives by taking baby steps and I wanted to do just that. The key is to set small goals and stick with them. But there was no way our family could get ahead if all our bills were thrown somewhere in a clutter of mail. So after reading the book, I wanted to make a change. I wanted to pay off debt. I wanted to stop living in survival mode with this mail situation (if so to speak). I became motivated and got to work.

(Just in case you have never heard of or read this book, you can purchase a copy on Amazon by clicking on the image above. You will not be disappointed)!

It took me about two days to clear the clutter, but it was two days well worth it! I dumped everything on the floor and got to work. Whatever were in bins, baskets, on the bookshelf, dinning table, etc. everything went on the floor!

20140212_104945 20140212_105014 20140212_104939

I sat and cried and cried as I overlooked this large pile of mail and as I sorted and organized each piece of mail. I though of quitting during the process. It was a dreaded task and I did not want to do it! And as I thought of the plan to keep the in-laws mail separate which we did not follow. Why was I the one to sit down and sort all the mail, I asked myself? I could not help but cry. And how could I ever get this down with a baby and a toddler running around and needing my attention? But I kept thinking of the benefits our family would gain from the de-cluttering and so, kept on going. Thankfully, the kids did well!

By the way, when I was done sorting, this entire bag was the in-laws alone.

20140213_175014

Despite my silly emotions over organizing the mail, I was so thrilled when it was over. I organized every piece of mail I could find in different categories. When it came to our bills (and they were mostly doctor’s bills that we had to pay after our insurance covered their part), I organized them in one bin according to dollar amount. So I placed the largest bill at the bottom and worked my way up to the smallest. Dave Ramsey recommends that the smallest debt be paid off first.

  • I found a $20 bill in the clutter

20140213_175258

  • Expired Khols cash $50 worth – gone down the drain! I had searched high and low for this during Christmas time, only to find them in the clutter.

20140213_175225

  • A subway card with at least $10 and some other gift card.

20140213_175239

  • And this was the pile that got thrown away after I shredded the important stuff that needed to be shredded. Two tall large bags of nonsense mails (I mean, catalogues, spammy mails, old sales paper, you name it!

20140213_175000

So was I happy I read Say Goodbye to Survival Mode? A big fat YES! Was I happy I broke down and organized our mail – YES!

Here are the benefits our family were able to enjoy after the de-cluttering process:

  • Less clutter: this is what our mail boiled down too after I got rid of all the junk and un-necessaries. I intend to get a better and more permanent filing type system like the one we had before (at the opening of this post).

20140213_174804

  • About a day or two after within organizing, I started calling around to take care of the bills, both old and new. We paid off close to $1,000 within two months of de-cluttering (My goal was to pay off $1,000 by the end of the year), but the goal was met within 2 months. We continue to pay off the rest and hope to have them fully paid off soon.
  • I realized that we owed less than I originally thought. It rounded up to just under $2,000 instead of the $5,000 I thought we had owed
  • Some of the debt that were hanging over my head had already being paid (had the mail being de-cluttered earlier, I would have known that)
  • All our coupons and store cash $$$ are in one place and easy to find when needed (no more expired and wasted money)
  • We have a peace of mind because we know where all our mail is and we know what bills we need to take care off as soon as they enter our home (No more wondering where things are)

I know this post was long but I felt that there was no way to make it much shorter. Hopefully, I did not bore you too much. Are there still times when our mail tend to end up in unwanted spots? Oh yes, but they are no longer tossed into a big storage bin like before. They will be organized and put where they belong. Hubby got in on the plan and helps out when he can.

Do you struggle with mail clutter? What is your family’s system for keeping the clutter down? Or does de-cluttering your mail help you save money?

Homemaking Cleaning & Organizing Series: Front Yard/Curb Appeal

It seems like keeping our little front yard possible has been a challenge. There is not much to it, but since we moved in, we have not done much with it. I debated whether to do a flower garden, vege garden, or do some kind of rock layout.

20140524_182655

The main reason I wanted a rock layout was to keep the snow clean during the winter. The children like to play outside in the snow and picking up dirty snow is no fun.

I finally decided to go with a rock layout with flowers in-between. Last Saturday, the entire family got on board, went to Menards and bought plants, rocks, and other gardening materials. Then we set to work to get the front yard/curb looking possible!

So here are photos of the terrible condition it was in before we made changes.

  • Lots of weeds and wild growing beans that the kids threw in the ground

20140519_165653

  • After I removed the weeds and wild plants

20140519_165702

  • And this is a plant we met there when we bought the home. It blooms each spring into a beautiful purple. There is photo of it blooming later in this post.

20140519_165707

Here are the after photos from this past Saturday.

  • Hubby prepping the ground a little

20140524_154946

  • Planting some flowers

20140524_161855

  • Measuring and cutting the garden fabric before laying the rocks.
  • Laying the rocks

20140524_161941

  • The kids got involved
  • This is the purple plant starting to bloom (mentioned above)
  • The finished product with some more beautiful plants on the wall

So we are very pleased with how it turned out, after all. I planted some veges in the back by the kitchen area but I forgot to take photos. They are growing nicely.

So what do you think about the new look?

Teaching Bible Stories to Children: Moses Crafts

Teach the story of Moses and Reinforce it with these 5 Simple Objects and Craft Ideas

(This was one of the original posts on this blog – It’s now being updated for easier reading purposes).

alt text: How to Teach the Story of Moses, Interactive Bible Story Lesson for Kids! by @athomewithzan

Today’s bible crafts are centered around teaching the story of Moses. Moses wrote the first 5 books of the bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, & Deuteronomy but teaching the events surrounding Moses begin in the book of Exodus chapter 2. Since the events are long, I only chose a few crafts to focus on. These crafts can be used for children ages 3 and up.

1). Moses as a Baby in the Basket on the River (Exodus Chapter 2).

To illustrate this scenery, place a doll wrapped with a towel in a basket. Fill a large container or tub of water and lay the basket in it.

moses 3

2). Moses’ Rod That He Used to Perform Miracles

We made a rod using Popsicle sticks glued together to show Moses’ Rod. It’s small but it demonstrated what I think it should. To go a little further we added some glue and sprinkled it with glitter. This is not necessary; we only made it glittery because our little girl made the rod.

20140502_163525

Examples of Moses’ Rod Turning into a Serpent

We used a plastic toy snake to demonstrate how Moses castes his rod down which turned into a serpent (Exodus 4:1-4).

Aaron, Moses’ brother, also casts the rod down before Pharaoh and again, it turned into a serpent (Exodus 7:10-13).

20140502_163644 20140502_163607

3). The Ten Plagues (Exodus 7:14 through Exodus 12:31).

We made Popsicle Stick puppets to illustrate this part of the story.

To print the printable below in PDF, click on this link The Ten Plagues. Then cut out each piece and glue them unto a Popsicle stick.

20140514_112442

Follow the instructions on the above printable to complete the Popsicle Stick puppet craft.

4). Crossing of the Red Sea (Exodus Chapter 14)

Construction Paper Sea Craft

  • Layer a blue sheet of construction paper on a flat surface.
  • Cut out a rectangular piece of brown construction paper and glue it in the middle of the blue construction paper.
  • Draw and cut shapes of ocean water from another sheet of blue construction paper.
  • Glue them on opposite sides of the brown construction paper.
  • You could also use small toy people to represent the Israelites crossing.

Hand print 10 Commandment Craft

We made these hand prints 10 Commandments using paint and 10 commandments on stones cut-outs.

Note: Although we made this hand print craft for The Ten Commandments, it’s NOT my original idea. I spotted it somewhere on the internet. I’ve searched the internet to find the original source to give credit to but I just cannot find it anymore. But it’s definitely a great way for explaining the 10 commandments to kids.

To Make Handprint 10 Commandments

  • We used pink acrylic paint to make hand shapes. Let the paint dry.
  • Then cut out the commandments from the printable above and glued each one to a finger.

The ten commandments

These are all the crafts we did to try to explain Moses to a 3 year old toddler. We hope you enjoy crafting these Bible stories with us and enjoy doing them with your child, children or students if you try them.

The Ten Commandments Learning Cards

You can also get these learning cards here for the little ones to practice. They come in black words and also in colorful words, if you prefer. Print them out, and leave all the rocks on the sheets to view as a whole, or cut them out as small individual cards. Print as many as you like with one small purchase. Get them here.

Homemaking Cleaning & Organizing Series: The Living Room

There is not much to be said about organizing the living room from my end. Except, choose the furniture and colors of your taste and that will definitely compliment your paint colors. See my previous post and full décor here on decorating on a budget.

We have played around with a few different coffee table sets. We first had a really nice round set that was made with iron and wood. But it was not so toddler friendly, after all. Our little one kept hurting her body on the iron part. I had covered the edges with a toddler safe corner/edge cover, but we still had the problem of the iron legs. Needless to say, I sold the set (sad to see it go) and bought this new one. If you go back to my post and full décor here on decorating on a budget, you will see that the end tables are round.

It took me a while to find something I kind of liked after I sold the other one (it was really nice). In addition, to find something toddler-friendly is a pain. I search stores and online about 5 months before I settled on anything. The new one is not so toddler friendly (I have to cover the edges with foam) because the kids still keep getting hurt by them.

The set came in parts by FedEx and by UPS a few days after I placed the order. By the way, I never order anything without first reading a bunch of reviews and making sure it is at least 4 stars. This one had 5 stars (for class, material, & easy set up).

Also, it came in a box to assemble. Assembling was super easy (I’d say less than 30 minutes) if you have no kids around getting in the way.

The coffee table is a little smaller that others we have owned but it has a double stand which gives a little extra space. The end tables are nice and tall, which I like a lot. The color of the set is a little lighter than previous ones but they will do the job for now. I cannot say it was my best pick, but I am content to have it and I think it works with the living room colors. As you can see, I use a kind of fall-themed color scheme year round!

Here is how they love after I set them up and added minimal décor!

What do you think about the look? What are your tips for organizing the living room? Would love to hear in the comments!
