It’s that time of the year when the outdoors are calling yet ALL THINGS bugs start flying around like crazy!! We had a case of the cicada buys for the past month and that in itself has really scared everyone from enjoying the outdoors. I’ve gotten out my shoo fly essential oil and made a bottle of bug spray to shoo them off. We used this spray last Spring and Summer and it has been a wonderful addition to our all-natural skin care products. (You don’t want to miss my post on 20 all-natural skin and hair products for the whole family).
If you have little ones at home, you will want to keep this DIY Bug Off Spray on hand during the warmer months. It’s good for the entire family and is a very natural option unlike most you’ll find on the market.
The Shoo Fly essential oil is the base for this bug spray. There’s no need to combine a bunch of oils to create the spray because all of the essentials is in this one oil. It contains Lemon Eucalyptus, Nootka Tree, Cedarwood, Catnip and Patchouli. Of course, you can purchase all these oils separately and create your very own DIY but I find it economical to just buy SHOO FLY blend. Right now, Eden’s Garden is having a huge 10 day anniversary sale! You can snag discounts on some of these oils. Would love for you to use my referral link.
How to make Bug OFF Spray
You will need:
- Shoo Fly Synergy Blend Essential Oil
- 1 TBSP Witch Hazel
- An Amber Spray Bottle (4oz)
- Water (just enough to fill the bottle)
What to do:
- Add 15 -20 drops of Shoo Fly essential oil to the Amber spray bottle.
- Pour in the Witch Hazel. Shake to mix.
- Next, fill the bottle with water up to the top leaving about 1″ space from the top.
- Shake well to mix.
- Your bug spray is now ready to use. Store in a cool, dry place.
- Before each use, give a good shake then spray over arms and legs as needed.
Note: The smell of the spray is very strong (reminds me of fresh cut grass) but the bugs will stay away. Most importantly, your little ones will be happy and you will too. You’ll also feel great knowing that what you are putting on your kids (and on your skin) is safe and natural. That in itself is reason to make this bug off spray!
