Make entering into the Period Cycle phase comfortable and smooth for your young daughter with these tips!

From the onset, watching your kids go from tiny carefree people into the stage of body hairs, deodorant and pads is surprising and emotional. It’s an adjustment I don’t think most parents are mentally prepared for and definitely NOT the kids. However, as we find ourselves in this stage, we start to sort of adjust to the new-normal.

This is not a topic we talk about often. In fact, it’s a topic I haven’t addressed here out of privacy for the kids. So we waited and now I think I’m OK talking about it. Although, I may or may not make this post private:)

And here’s the surprising part (And I am not knowledgeable on the age). But the starting age has gotten younger and younger. A 10 year old kid is quite a young kid. At 11-12, kids are very young also but I think that was the normal age.

If your kids are almost at this stage, you may want to start getting prepared. This new phase doesn’t have to be scary.

Here are some things you can do to make the first day go smoother:

  • Talk to your daughter about that stage
  • Let her know that this is completely normal and part of God’s plan for women (I may have not said these but it’s true)
  • On the day of – Take your daughter out to help ease her mind – we go shopping for “necessities” and favorite things. We also went out bowling for our second daughter. Although I believe it was summer and we were already planning to go bowling.
  • You can buy her a book like this one if you need further help with teaching her about her changing body.
  • Period Kits – You can buy a kit such as this one. However, if you are going to do a kit, I recommend buying it before.
  • DIY kit – You can also make a kit. I prefer this option over the “buy” a kit. This is why: I love the freedom to add what I think my kids needed rather than being limited to what’s in a purchased kit. Ideas?
  • Pads, rashers, shaving cream, etc. It’s probably not the most exciting gifted kit but it’s a necessary one.
  • An option journal could be used to document these early days.
  • Period undies – I recommend these and these. They have worked great for our girls!

Other things you should consider doing to make the process smoother:

  • Place about 3-5 in a take-along bag for your daughter along with an extra pair of undies (and mini wipes) – Use these little bags or this bag comes with some essentials if you just want to have everything on-hand and don’t want to choose
  • Keep some in your own purse or car for when she’s out with you (the car is always a great idea for impromptu outings and travel). When something shows up, you’re ready
  • Keep baby wipes
  • Keep extra pairs of undies
  • And maybe a change of clothes

Also consider these below in case they are needed, since some women experience cramps during that time:

  • Kids Advil, Tylenol, Ibuprofen or some other recommended for kids meds that can help with menstrual cramps
  • A Heating pad
  • Maybe tea – There are a lot of herbal teas that can probably help to bring relaxation to cramps (I want to think that I loved orange peel or lime peel teas during that time)
  • Essential Oils if you’re big into that

These period underwear have been so great for our daughters. They are a must buy for teens and kids just starting out. They are made with extra layers of protection to help prevent However, they will still need to wear sanitary napkins though. These underwear aren’t to be worn by themselves during that time. They aren’t a stand-alone.

So mamas and young girls, with confidence and prep you can do this!

She looketh well to the ways of her household and eateth not the bread of idleness (Proverbs 31:27).
