I am enjoying styling our girls hair for school this year. The hairstyles are so fun to create and make the girls look so cute. These styles I did for our 4th and 6th grader for back-to-school. Albeit, I did them the second week of school because we didn’t get around to prepping for the official First Day of school. The kids got so many compliments from their teachers and classmates. Mamma felt “proud” of “her” work:)

Why Braid Your Little Girls Hair?

Braiding our girls hair is so much than just cute hairstyles though. It’s also a way to have less combing to do and to make the hair more manageable. In addition, less combing is always a good idea for the kids right? No one really loves others pulling on their hair. Our girls hair are very thick and doing their hair is such a chore. But it needs to be done. Hair braiding is such a time-saver especially on travel days.

What is the Best Braid for Hair?

Personally, I love box braids and quick corn-rows for the girls. They are just easier on the girls since their hair is just so thick. I love to add extensions to their hair when ever possible. Extensions make their hair look longer and the girls love having them.

Do you Prefer Small Hair Braids or Large Braids?

It doesn’t matter, but it depends on how long you want the hair to last and how much your kids can handle. I never do our kids hair in super small braids because they just can’t handle it. In fact, this is the first time I have done this girl’s hair in such small corn-rows. I usually go big.

Do I Have to Add Extensions to Kids Hair?

No. You don’t extensions to braid your kids hair. It is a choice. For us is mainly a preference depending on the occasion. However, adding a little extension has some benefits:

  • It makes the hair fuller
  • It makes the hair appear longer
  • It may get a little less wrinkled faster
  • It seems to grow the natural hair

I think when the extensions are removed the natural hair appears longer for this reason: it is less combing while the extensions are in so that means less hair strands are coming off while they are in. I think – I’m really not an expert on this, just assuming.

How Long Should You Keep Braids in Your Kids Hair?

I typically keep our kids hair in for a week to 3 weeks depending on the hairstyle. The bigger the braids, the soon it comes off. Our braids are usually boxed braids. I have done some small boxed braids in the past but not too, too small. Just enough to last on our vacations. I haven’t done their hair this small in corn-rows before but this one stayed in about 2 weeks. I guess it could have stayed in longer. But the hair was getting a little frizzled and needed to redo. I did re-do this same style after week 2 to get their school photos (my personal photos, not the schools). I didn’t unto the whole hair, just re-did one braid at a time. After that week, I removed the styles for something new. This time, it was 2 giant braids with extensions just to give her hair a break from the smaller ones. So basically, if you think your child’s hair can last longer, then go for it. If you feel it needs to be removed, washed and redone, then go for it.

For school, I was a bit concerned about leaving their braids in for more than a week. But I met a mom at Walmart and her two girls hair were all braided up. Upon asking her how long she kept the braids in their hair, she mentioned that she usually keeps them in as looooong as possible. That was my conformation that keeping the braids in more than a week is ok.

Can I Wash Hair with Braids and Extensions?

You sure can wash hair with braids and extensions. Note that some frizzling will occur so you may need to re-do a few or a lot of them. I find it more beneficial to remove everything, wash, and redo in a different style.
