I am always trying to find new edible sensory play for the children. Here is another one I came up with below. This tray can be used for babies (around 6 months) and toddlers.
1 box (4 single packets) unflavored gelatin
2 cup Quaker Oats
blue and green food coloring
1 rectangular container (I used a disposable baking pan)
Place the amount of water for boiling in a pot on the stove. Add a dashes of green and blue food coloring until the water looks like ocean water (the amount of boiling water need is found on the package).
Mix and freeze the gelatin according to package directions.
Remove the gelatin from the freezer break it up with a spoon or with your hands.
Spread the jello in half of the rectangular container.
Then add the oatmeal to the other half.
Bring some of the jello forward so it kind of looks like waves bouncing of the shore.
Add little see items (shells, rocks, plants, etc). We had some ocean bath toys on hand and a few other items from for our fish tank to throw on there.
My daughter also had a Minnie Mouse figurine and also Mickey Mouse (was not in sight at the time) from one of her birthday cake. The characters are in bathing suits since the cake was something to do with surfing. Check out Minnie Mouse relaxing at the beach!
I placed it on the kitchen floor (easy clean up) and let them play. Be sure to monitor so babies do not eat the rocks or whatever small unsafe ocean items that may be on there.
The jello was a little too cold for the kids hands but hey, they had fun eating the stuff of food from the tray.
