What have you been learning from God’s Word, lately? On Sunday mornings during church, we are going through the book of Colossians. Our Pastor is doing a verse by verse study on what God expects of us. We are now in chapter 3. Last week, we learned from verses 12 and 13 about characters believers in Christ should have. The following verses are taken from the King James Version (KJV).
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;
13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
And this past Sunday, we moved unto verse 12 where charity (love) is the stressed character.
14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
As believers in Christ, we should put off the old deeds and put on new Christ-like characters. However, all the characters mentioned in verses 12 and 13 is not complete without the main character given in verse 14. Love is the bonding character that holds all together. According to the verse, it “is the bond of perfectness”. If we love someone, we will demonstrate mercy, kindness, forgiveness, etc. to that person. But if love is not the bonding factor, then all else will definitely fail! Refer to the opening verse on the image.
How are we doing with those we say we love? Even the ones we sit next to in the pews on Sundays – do we say we love them but the above characters are missing in action? Think about Christ and how He loves. He gave it all for us! I know sometimes we feel that we cannot love or do not chose to love a person. Remember, we can do nothing within ourselves. But with Christ, we can do all things. Philippians 4:13 says, I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
