Valentine’s Candy Jar (Candy Salad)

Making a candy salad jar is so fun. I get that it may not be the heathiest thing to eat, but it was such a fun treat for everyone. I don’t do much candy to be honest. I just loved how the jar looked and the happiness on my family’s face.

This was my first time making a jar like this – actually, I think I made a small easter bowl of candies last year. Now, I’ve set out bowls with various chocolates and candy cane for Christmas on our coffee or dining tables, but I don’t think I ever made a full jar like this one.

Candy Salad Jar Brought Much Smiles

When I first made this jar, I didn’t expect anyone to take as much interest in it as they did. My kids were super excited and dove right in. My husband has been eating from the jar like no one else. It was sort of wild to me how something so simple brought so much joy to them. And then I thought, well I guess this isn’t the heathiest idea but I guess it was ok for a seasonal treat. Hmmm, now that would be fun for every season. I particularly love looking at how the can mix looks in the jar – not so much eating. My teeth doesn’t allow for too much sweet:)

For the candy jar, I used a 1/2 gallon Anchor Hocking’s food storage jar(affiliate link) and I tied a cute piece of decorative ribbon around the lid. I set it on my cute entryway cabinet for all to see and enjoy.

A Tip Before Making a Candy Salad Jar

Be sure to mix the candy first before putting them in a jar. You can mix them in a large bowl, then transfer. I mean, you put all the candy in the jar first then shake the jar or use a spoon to stir but I found that harder to do than simply mixing them in a bowl, then putting them in the jar. Here’s why you should mix things up.

At first, I wanted a layered look but changed to a mixed look. Here were the cons:

  • it was hard to get the candy they really wanted from the bottom
  • the layers weren’t equal since some bags were more than others and some candy were bigger than others (take a look at the following photo to see how the bottom and top layers look more than the middle layer.

Note: You can do layers if you choose, but keep those cons in mind and also, if you choose layers, make sure to put equal amounts of candy so the layers can be even. If you put 2 cups of a bigger candy, you may need to even that out with 3 cups of a smaller candy.

My photo is blurry here and I didn’t realize it came out blurry until I was about to edit. At the point, I think the jar was already 1/2 way through:) but this is my cute set-up here in our entryway.
